Colorful says its iGame X870E VULCAN OC motherboard helped push an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D to 7,335.48 MHz, or about 7.34 GHz. The run used extreme overclocking conditions, with liquid nitrogen cooling reported by Tom’s Hardware. It is an impressive frequency milestone—not a practical 24/7 clock speed for ordinary gaming systems.

What Colorful achieved

The reported result is a peak CPU frequency of 7,335.48 MHz on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, using Colorful’s iGame X870E VULCAN OC motherboard. Colorful describes the run as a global high-frequency record for the processor, while independent coverage reported the same frequency and identified liquid nitrogen cooling and an overclocker known as “Hero” as part of the attempt.

The wording matters. The available evidence establishes a Colorful-reported overclocking milestone, but does not provide a complete independent validation trail with every detail a formal ranking submission would normally include. Publicly documented information does not fully specify the BIOS revision, motherboard revision, workload, duration, temperature, or complete validation screenshots.

7.34 GHz versus the stock Ryzen 7 9800X3D

AMD rates the Ryzen 7 9800X3D with a 4.7 GHz base clock and an up-to-5.2 GHz maximum boost clock. The 7,335.48 MHz result is therefore approximately 2.135 GHz above AMD’s published maximum boost figure—about 41% higher as a clock-frequency comparison.

These figures should not be read as a performance comparison. A frequency-validation run does not show that games, rendering applications, or sustained all-core workloads run 41% faster. It also does not establish that 7.335 GHz was maintained across all eight cores, or that the processor could sustain the frequency under a meaningful workload.

AMD lists the chip as unlocked and supports conventional tuning features including Precision Boost Overdrive, Curve Optimizer, EXPO, and Ryzen Master. That support does not make an extreme voltage-and-liquid-nitrogen run an everyday operating profile.

Why an X3D processor reaching 7 GHz is notable

X3D processors have historically required more careful voltage and thermal management because of their additional stacked cache technology. With the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD changed the physical arrangement of its second-generation 3D V-Cache design, placing the cache below the processor’s compute die. AMD says this brings the compute die closer to the cooler and helps enable higher operating clocks.

That design context helps explain why a 9800X3D can be an interesting extreme-overclocking subject. It does not mean that every Ryzen 7 9800X3D has similar headroom. Silicon quality, cooling, firmware, memory configuration, voltage behavior, and the operator’s technique all influence the result.

The role of the iGame X870E VULCAN OC

The motherboard is built for enthusiasts who tune beyond ordinary automatic settings. According to Colorful’s current product specifications, the iGame X870E VULCAN OC V14 includes:

Colorful advertises dual-channel DDR5 support above 10,000 MT/s on the current product page, while its announcement cites up to DDR5-10400 MT/s in the relevant configuration. Those figures describe overclocked memory capability, not a guarantee that every processor and memory kit will boot or remain stable at those settings.

The board’s power delivery and recovery controls are relevant to competitive overclocking, but the motherboard alone did not create the 7.34 GHz result. The CPU sample, BIOS, memory, power supply, cooling system, insulation, and operator all form part of the platform.

Cooling and voltage explain the headline

Liquid nitrogen is central to interpreting this achievement. Subzero cooling can keep the processor within a workable thermal range during brief validation attempts at voltages and frequencies far beyond normal operation. It is not equivalent to using a high-end air cooler or a conventional 240, 280, or 360 mm liquid cooler.

One secondary report lists approximately 1.688 V for the run. That figure should be treated as a reported value rather than an independently verified recommendation. The available sources do not establish whether it was a BIOS-set voltage, a measured load voltage, how long it was applied, or whether the processor remained fully functional afterward.

High voltage can accelerate electromigration and permanent degradation. Inadequate cooling can cause rapid thermal escalation, while liquid nitrogen introduces condensation and moisture hazards. Extreme overclockers also have to manage failed boots, memory-training loops, BIOS recovery, insulation, and the possibility of damaging the CPU, motherboard, or power-delivery components. AMD warns that operation outside published specifications can affect applicable warranty coverage.

Is this an independently verified world record?

Colorful officially reported the 7,335.48 MHz result. Tom’s Hardware independently reported the frequency, liquid nitrogen setup, and record context. However, the available material does not document enough information to call it an independently verified world record without qualification.

The most accurate description is: Colorful says the run set a global high-frequency record for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, while independent coverage reported the same 7,335.48 MHz result. That separates the manufacturer’s claim from the evidence publicly described by outside reporting.

A separate DDR5 demonstration

Colorful also reported a different overclocking result involving a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and its iGame SHADOW II DDR5 memory: 9,400 MT/s at CL30. This was a separate memory demonstration, not part of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D’s 7,335.48 MHz CPU-frequency run.

It is also important to preserve the unit: DDR5 results are normally expressed in MT/s, meaning data transfers per second. That should not automatically be rewritten as a physical memory clock of 9,400 MHz.

What does the result mean for 9800X3D owners?

For most owners, very little changes. The result demonstrates frequency headroom under exceptional conditions, but it does not establish a safe daily overclock, a typical retail ceiling, or a gaming-performance gain.

Everyday users should generally concentrate on stable firmware, cooling, memory compatibility, and modest tuning through supported platform features. PBO, Curve Optimizer, and an EXPO memory profile are far more relevant to a normal system than copying an extreme validation voltage or frequency. A record-setting sample should not be treated as representative of the silicon lottery.

Should you buy the Colorful motherboard?

The iGame X870E VULCAN OC makes the most sense for competitive overclockers, benchmarkers, hardware reviewers, and enthusiasts who specifically want BCLK controls, dual BIOS, extensive recovery hardware, a two-DIMM memory layout, and unusually aggressive DDR5 tuning potential.

It is a weaker fit for a conventional gaming build. If you will run the 9800X3D at stock settings or use light PBO tuning, a less specialized X870E, X870, B850, or B650E motherboard may provide the features you actually need at lower cost or with greater availability. The two-DIMM design can help extreme memory tuning, but it also reduces upgrade flexibility compared with a four-slot board.

Before buying, compare:

  • BIOS maturity and Ryzen 9000 memory compatibility.
  • The number of M.2 slots and PCIe lanes your build requires.
  • USB, networking, and Wi-Fi features you can actually use.
  • Whether your network supports 5GbE or Wi-Fi 7.
  • Local pricing, retailer support, warranty handling, and product availability.
  • Whether the budget would deliver more gaming value through a faster graphics card, monitor, SSD, or cooler.

The bottom line

Colorful’s 7,335.48 MHz Ryzen 7 9800X3D run is a technically striking showcase of what an exceptional AM5 platform can achieve under liquid nitrogen and extreme tuning. It demonstrates benchmark frequency headroom, not a practical 7.3 GHz gaming configuration. For ordinary buyers, the iGame X870E VULCAN OC is a specialist enthusiast motherboard; the record itself is not a reason every Ryzen 7 9800X3D owner should buy one.
