Colorful introduced its flagship iGame Z790D5 VULCAN motherboard series on September 2, 2024, after previewing it at Computex. The series includes two E-ATX boards—the black VULCAN X V20 and white VULCAN W V20—with the same published headline hardware: a 19+1+1-phase VRM, DDR5-7800 overclocking support, four M.2 slots, dual USB4, 5GbE, 2.5GbE, and Wi-Fi 7.
They are technically ambitious Z790 boards, but in 2026 their value depends on discounted pricing, local warranty support, case compatibility, and whether you already own an LGA1700 processor. New-system buyers should compare newer Intel and AMD platforms before choosing either Vulcan model.
What Colorful launched

Specifications can vary with BIOS versions and regional retail packages. The official VULCAN X product page and Colorful’s VULCAN W listing should be treated as the primary references.
Power delivery and overclocking
The headline power design is a 19+1+1-phase VRM using 105A DrMOS stages. Colorful also specifies an eight-layer low-loss PCB, reinforced DDR5 slots, and a dedicated LN2 Mode for extreme overclocking. A rear-panel BIOS update feature is included in the advertised feature set. Colorful’s announcement provides the main VRM and PCB claims.
That hardware suggests substantial electrical capacity for high-power LGA1700 processors, but it does not guarantee a particular overclock or temperature. Results depend on CPU silicon quality, cooling, BIOS maturity, load-line calibration, memory stability, and configured power limits. LN2 Mode is intended for competitive or laboratory-style overclocking; it is not necessary for a conventional air- or liquid-cooled gaming PC.
Memory support: DDR5-7800 is an overclocking target
The boards use DDR5 exclusively—“D5” is part of the model name—and provide four DIMM slots. Colorful advertises speeds up to DDR5-7800 OC, while launch coverage reports support for capacities up to 48GB per module and 192GB total.
DDR5-7800 is not a guaranteed plug-and-play speed. Two-DIMM matched kits usually offer a better chance of reaching very high frequencies than four-DIMM configurations. Capacity, memory rank, the CPU’s integrated memory controller, BIOS version, and the memory IC all matter. Use a single matched kit, check Colorful’s QVL where available, enable Intel XMP, and test stability rather than treating a successful boot as proof of a stable system.
Expansion and storage
Storage is one of the Vulcan’s strongest features: one PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot and three PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slots provide room for several NVMe drives, alongside six SATA 6Gbps ports reported in the board documentation. The primary graphics slot is PCIe 5.0 x16.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume every connector operates at full speed simultaneously. M.2 sockets and secondary PCIe slots can share chipset or CPU lanes, potentially reducing slot bandwidth or disabling another connector. Consult the exact board layout and storage documentation before planning multiple drives, capture cards, or additional expansion cards. The manual’s lane-allocation diagram is more reliable than general Z790 assumptions.

USB4, display output, and networking
Dual USB4
Two rear USB4 Type-C ports are rated at 40Gbps and are listed with video-output capability up to 4K at 60Hz. USB4’s rated interface speed is not the same as guaranteed file-transfer performance: the attached device, cable, controller, SSD thermals, workload, and negotiated protocol all affect results.
Video output also depends on using a compatible processor with integrated graphics. It does not turn the motherboard into a substitute for a discrete GPU in every system, and USB4 capability should not automatically be equated with Thunderbolt certification.
Front-panel USB-C
The internal front Type-C header supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 at 20Gbps. Colorful lists up to 60W PD3.0 support, which can be useful for charging compatible devices, but actual charging depends on the case wiring, cable, connected device, and negotiated power profile.

5GbE and Wi-Fi 7
Built-in Realtek 5GbE and 2.5GbE are valuable for NAS transfers, workstation workflows, and multi-gigabit networks. They provide little benefit on a typical connection below multi-gigabit speeds unless the local network also supports them. The 5GbE port requires compatible networking equipment and suitable cabling.
The Intel BE200 provides Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. Wi-Fi 7 benefits require a compatible access point and client environment, and real throughput varies with channel width, region, interference, distance, drivers, and router configuration. Confirm that the retail package includes the required antenna hardware.
Cooling, headers, and appearance
The boards use broad Vulcan cooling armor and large heatsink assemblies. Colorful also supports lighting synchronization through iGame Center. Wccftech’s review coverage identifies six fan headers, two pump headers, three ARGB headers, and one RGB header. Those header counts are useful for planning a build, but the heatsink design alone does not prove a particular VRM temperature, noise level, or sustained-power result.
Case compatibility is a major concern
The VULCAN boards are E-ATX and measure approximately 305 × 277mm. They are wider than standard ATX boards, so a case must provide more than a nominal “E-ATX compatible” label.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Check the manufacturer’s exact E-ATX clearance dimensions.
- Verify right-edge cable-routing openings and front-panel header access.
- Allow space for thick power and USB cables.
- Check radiator, reservoir, drive-cage, and graphics-card clearance together.
- Confirm the standoff layout and whether the case offers full rather than partial E-ATX support.
A partial-fit case may physically accept the mounting holes while obstructing the board’s right edge.

BIOS and setup cautions
Although Z790 supports Intel 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation desktop processors, a particular 14th-generation CPU may require a newer BIOS before the system will boot. Check Colorful’s CPU-support list and BIOS notes before buying.
If the board supports CPU-free rear-panel BIOS updating, follow the exact instructions in the VULCAN manual: use the specified FAT32 USB drive and file-renaming procedure, connect it to the designated port, and do not interrupt power during the update. If an update fails, clear CMOS and repeat only according to Colorful’s official support instructions. Do not rely on instructions for a different Colorful board.
Price and availability
Colorful’s launch material did not establish a universally confirmed current MSRP. Wccftech reported a $499.99 US review-era price signal for the VULCAN W in September 2024, but that figure is historical and should not be treated as the current price. Availability and pricing in 2026 must be checked with a live retailer.
Before ordering, verify the seller’s authenticity, return policy, replacement process, regional warranty, included Wi-Fi antennas, and whether the board is new rather than old review or open-box stock. Colorful motherboard support and distribution can vary considerably by country.
Should you buy the VULCAN in 2026?
For an existing LGA1700 owner
Possibly. It can make sense if you already own a compatible DDR5 LGA1700 processor and need premium connectivity, several M.2 slots, 5GbE, USB4, or advanced tuning controls. The purchase is much safer when the board is substantially discounted and backed by a reputable local distributor.
For an extreme overclocker
The VRM specification, low-loss PCB, reinforced memory design, and LN2 Mode make the series interesting as an enthusiast platform. However, BIOS quality and support matter as much as electrical capacity, and no specific overclocking result should be assumed from the specification sheet alone.
For a new PC builder
Compare newer Intel LGA1851 and AMD AM5 platforms first. LGA1700 is an older platform with a limited upgrade path by 2026, so paying launch-era flagship pricing for a new build is difficult to justify unless the Vulcan is heavily discounted and its feature set directly matches your needs.
Verdict
The Colorful iGame Z790D5 VULCAN X V20 and W V20 are feature-rich, premium Z790 motherboards rather than automatic best buys. Their dual USB4 ports, 5GbE plus 2.5GbE networking, Wi-Fi 7, four M.2 slots, strong advertised VRM, and distinctive styling are genuinely appealing. The practical risks are equally important: E-ATX case fit, BIOS readiness, memory tuning, lane sharing, regional support, and uncertain current pricing.
Buy one only when the price, warranty, and availability are verifiable. For an existing LGA1700 owner, a discounted local unit may be worthwhile. For a new 2026 build, newer Intel or AMD platforms are usually the more sensible starting point.
