Yes—the widely reported incident was real, but it happened in late 2022 and was reported in December 2022 and January 2023, not in 2026. Antony Aumann, a philosophy professor at Northern Michigan University, became suspicious when a student submitted an unusually polished essay about the morality of burqa bans. After Aumann questioned the student, the student admitted using ChatGPT to produce the paper.
The reported consequence was a rewrite of the assignment. The student was not publicly identified, and the available accounts do not report expulsion, suspension, or a formal university-wide punishment.
What happened?
Aumann was grading papers for a world-religions course at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. One essay stood out because its grammar, structure, and argument were substantially more polished than the student’s earlier work. The paper also followed the assignment closely and presented complicated ideas in unusually clean prose.
Aumann questioned the student about the work. According to Northern Michigan University’s account, the student admitted that the content had been generated by an AI application. Contemporary reporting identified the tool as ChatGPT.

The incident became one of the earliest widely publicized examples of a college student submitting generative-AI writing as personal academic work, shortly after ChatGPT’s public launch.
Northern Michigan University’s account identifies Aumann and describes both the incident and his subsequent changes to course assessment. His faculty profile confirms his role at the university.
How did the professor notice?
The key warning sign was a mismatch between the submitted essay and the student’s previous work. Aumann said the student had not previously demonstrated the same level of sophisticated grammar, organization, and analytical writing.

That distinction matters. Aumann did not establish authorship with a reliable automated detector. He noticed a contextual inconsistency, asked the student about it, and received an admission. A polished essay alone is not proof of AI use: students can improve, receive permitted assistance, or produce work in a different style.
The strongest evidence in this particular case was the student’s reported admission—not the professor’s initial suspicion.
What was the essay about?
The assignment addressed the morality or ethics of burqa bans. The subject was reported by The New York Times and other coverage of the case.

The available reports describe the paper as generated or copied from ChatGPT, but they do not establish exactly how much editing the student performed afterward. It is therefore more accurate to say that the student submitted ChatGPT-generated work as their own than to claim that every word was necessarily produced by the system.
Did ChatGPT catch the student?
Not in any dependable forensic sense.
Aumann later said that he pasted the essay into ChatGPT and asked whether ChatGPT had written it. The system reportedly gave a very high-confidence answer, described in one university account as “99.9%.” That anecdote is attention-grabbing, but it is not reliable authorship verification.
- A language model cannot establish where a passage came from simply by judging its text.
- ChatGPT can produce confident answers that are wrong.
- Its response does not prove that a passage was generated by ChatGPT rather than another tool or a human.
- The student’s admission, not the chatbot’s self-classification, was the meaningful evidence in this case.
Northern Michigan University’s later account includes the anecdote. It should be understood as a retrospective story about Aumann’s investigation, not as evidence that ChatGPT is an authorship detector.
What happened to the student?
The student was reportedly required to rewrite the paper. Aumann told Futurism that his usual approach to a first plagiarism offense was to require a new submission, with more severe consequences for repeat offenses.
The student’s name was not disclosed in the available reporting. There is no verified basis for saying that the student was expelled, suspended, or subjected to a publicly documented formal disciplinary hearing. Nor should Aumann’s reported classroom response be treated as Northern Michigan University’s universal academic-integrity policy.

Requiring a rewrite can serve both as a consequence and as a way to test whether the student understands the material and can produce the work independently. The sources do not provide enough information to assess the student’s final grade or any additional administrative action.

Was using ChatGPT automatically cheating?
The central issue was not necessarily every possible use of an AI tool. It was the undisclosed substitution of machine-generated writing for the student’s own assessed work.
Whether AI assistance is allowed depends on the instructor’s directions and the institution’s rules. A course might prohibit generating an essay while permitting brainstorming, grammar assistance, translation, or critique. Another course might require students to disclose any AI assistance. In a third, AI-generated text could itself be the object of analysis.
For this case, the careful description is: the student admitted submitting ChatGPT-generated content as personal work, contrary to the assignment’s expected authorship. That does not establish a universal rule for every form of AI assistance.
How did Aumann change his course?
Northern Michigan University reported that Aumann planned to redesign assignments so that students’ process and understanding would be easier to evaluate. His proposed measures included:
- Having students write first drafts in class.
- Using browsers that monitor or restrict computer activity.
- Asking students to explain the revisions made between drafts.
- Possibly asking students to evaluate, fact-check, or improve ChatGPT responses instead of simply banning discussion of the technology.
These were Aumann’s course-level responses, not evidence of a university-wide Northern Michigan University mandate. They also involve trade-offs: supervised writing can provide stronger evidence of authorship, while monitored software may raise privacy, accessibility, and false-accusation concerns.

Traditional plagiarism checks primarily look for overlap with existing sources. Newly generated text may not match a published passage, even if the student did not write it. As a result, instructors began considering supervised drafting, oral examinations, handwritten work, staged assignments, group work, and other ways to evaluate the writing process—not just the final product.

What this incident proves—and what it does not

The practical lesson for students and instructors
Students need clear instructions about which AI uses are allowed, prohibited, or required to be disclosed. Instructors need to avoid treating a detector score, a writing-style change, or ChatGPT’s own guess as conclusive proof.
A stronger process combines explicit rules with evidence of learning: drafts, notes, source checks, revision explanations, short oral discussions, or in-class writing where appropriate. It should also account for legitimate writing support, accessibility needs, multilingual writers, and the possibility that a student simply improved.
The Northern Michigan University case is best understood as a documented admission following a professor’s contextual suspicion—not as a demonstration that AI authorship can be proven by software. Its lasting significance is that it forced colleges to reconsider what an essay is supposed to measure and how they can fairly verify the work behind it.
