Cloudflare Workers for Platforms lets a software platform run code written by its customers—or generated by AI—without turning every customization into a feature request. The platform deploys each customer codebase as an isolated Worker, then routes traffic through controls chosen by the platform operator. That makes it possible to offer programmable behavior beyond the APIs a product team anticipated, while leaving the operator responsible for tenancy, limits, authentication, and cost management.

What Workers for Platforms is

Cloudflare describes Workers for Platforms as infrastructure for platforms that want customers to deploy code or extend product behavior. Customer code runs as an untrusted Worker in a hosted sandbox, with a separate Worker for each customer. A platform can expose bindings to services such as Workers KV, D1, and R2, assign customer-specific subdomains or custom hostnames, and collect logs and metrics across user Workers.

The idea dates to Cloudflare’s May 10, 2022 announcement by Rita Kozlov. Cloudflare’s launch argument was that APIs expose only the abstractions their owners choose, while functions let a developer define behavior from lower-level primitives; those functions can still call existing APIs. The announcement illustrated the demand with lines such as “If only you could customize X, we’ll be able to use your product” and “If you just let us do Y,  we’ll expand our usage of your product by 10x.” These were Cloudflare’s examples, not independently verified customer interviews.

Kozlov summarized the launch thesis this way: “This gets at why we’re so excited about Workers for Platforms: it enables you to expose a direct way for your customers’ developers to bring their own logic to any application.” That statement explains the product’s purpose, but the current architecture and limits are defined by today’s documentation rather than the 2022 launch post.

How the architecture handles customer code

A typical deployment separates the platform’s control plane from the code its customers upload. Cloudflare documents four pieces:

Component Role Typical controls or capabilities
Dispatch namespace Container for customer Workers Cloudflare says namespace Workers are not subject to per-account script limits. The recommended production pattern is one namespace for customers, with a separate staging namespace for testing.
Dynamic dispatch Worker Entry point that selects the right customer Worker Can choose by hostname, path, headers, or other criteria; perform authentication, validation, rate limiting, and response handling; and set per-customer CPU and subrequest limits.
User Workers Customer-written code deployed by the platform Can receive platform-provided bindings to resources such as KV, D1, and R2.
Optional outbound Worker Intercepts fetch calls made by user Workers Can control egress, log calls to external services, or modify requests—for example, by adding authentication headers.

In practice, a request can pass through the dispatch Worker, the selected user Worker, and, when enabled, an outbound Worker. The dispatch layer is therefore more than a router: it is where a platform can enforce its tenant policy before and after customer code runs.

What “isolated” means—and what it does not mean

Cloudflare’s architecture documentation says each namespace user Worker runs in untrusted mode. User Workers do not share cache, even when they are on the same Cloudflare zone, and they cannot access the request.cf object. Those are specific runtime boundaries, not a blanket promise that every security, privacy, or compliance concern disappears.

The platform operator still has to design authentication, authorization, input validation, resource quotas, secrets handling, logging, and response sanitization. A dispatch Worker can implement those controls, and custom CPU and subrequest limits can constrain individual tenants. An outbound Worker can provide another policy point for external network calls. None of those controls removes the need to review the code and data flows of the product being built.

Workers for Platforms or service bindings?

Cloudflare’s rule of thumb is based on whether the Worker graph is known ahead of time:

Choose When it fits Why
Service bindings Your team knows which Workers need to communicate. They provide explicit connections between a known set of internal services.
Workers for Platforms Customers upload Workers dynamically. The dispatch namespace can select and run tenant code that did not exist when the platform was designed.

The patterns are compatible. A platform can use service bindings for its own fixed internal services while dispatching dynamically uploaded customer Workers through a namespace.

A practical request flow

  1. Identify the tenant. The dispatch Worker examines a hostname, path, header, token, or another routing signal.
  2. Authenticate and validate. Platform code checks the caller and validates the request before invoking customer logic.
  3. Apply tenant limits. The platform can set CPU and subrequest limits appropriate to that customer or operation.
  4. Invoke the user Worker. The selected customer code runs in the namespace’s untrusted environment and uses only the bindings the platform supplies.
  5. Control outbound calls when needed. An outbound Worker can inspect or modify fetch requests and record external-service activity.
  6. Handle the response. The dispatch layer can sanitize or transform the response before returning it to the caller.

This arrangement lets the platform expose extension points without handing customers the entire application or account. It also creates clear places to measure usage and enforce policy.

What customers can extend

The product is most useful when a platform has a stable core but many tenant-specific requirements. A customer Worker might transform incoming data, connect a platform object to an external service, implement a custom workflow, or add business rules that would otherwise require a bespoke feature in the host product. The platform decides which APIs, storage bindings, domains, and execution limits are available.

Cloudflare’s product page also carries a testimonial attributed to Laurie Voss, npm co-founder and chief data officer: “Over 10 million developers around the world rely on the npm Registry to download packages over 1 billion times a day. We invested in Cloudflare Workers to improve our global performance, and now with the Cloudflare Workers globally available key-value store (Cloudflare Workers KV), we can make performance improvements that used to be impossible.” The page does not show a publication year for that statement, so its figures should be read as the speaker’s attributed description rather than a current independent measurement.

Pricing and the usage variables that matter

Cloudflare’s Workers for Platforms pricing documentation, last updated April 21, 2026, lists a $25 monthly paid plan. The included allowances and overages are:

Item Included each month Overage
Inbound requests 20 million $0.30 per additional million requests
CPU time 60 million CPU milliseconds $0.02 per additional million CPU milliseconds
Scripts 1,000 $0.02 per additional script

Cloudflare says it does not bill subrequests separately. Instead, it counts one request across the dispatch Worker → user Worker → outbound Worker chain and charges CPU time across those Workers. Maximum CPU time is 30 seconds per invocation; Cron Trigger or Queue Consumer invocations have a stated maximum of 15 minutes. Cloudflare recommends custom limits to control bills and reduce the risk of accidental runaway usage or denial-of-wallet attacks.

The vendor’s illustration estimates $71.80 per month for 100 million requests, an average of 10 milliseconds of CPU per request, and 1,200 scripts. That is an example using the documented formula, not a universal forecast. Your bill is driven by inbound volume, CPU consumed by the complete Worker chain, and the number of deployed scripts. Prices and limits can change, so check the current Workers for Platforms pricing documentation before committing to a budget.

Operational decisions to make before launch

Define the tenant contract

Document which events invoke customer code, what request and response shapes are guaranteed, which bindings exist, and how versioning works. A narrow contract makes customer upgrades and incident response manageable.

Separate staging from production

Use the separate staging namespace Cloudflare recommends to test new customer scripts, dispatch rules, bindings, and limits before promoting them to production.

Set limits per customer

Choose CPU and subrequest ceilings based on the workload rather than allowing every tenant to consume the same maximum. Monitor both normal usage and rejected executions.

Plan observability

Capture tenant identity, script version, invocation outcome, latency, CPU use, subrequest behavior, and outbound destinations. Logs and metrics across user Workers help connect platform-level incidents to an individual deployment.

Control outbound access

Decide which external hosts are allowed and whether requests must pass through an outbound Worker for authentication, auditing, or transformation. Treat customer-supplied URLs as untrusted input.

Who should use it?

Workers for Platforms is a strong fit for a multi-tenant software product whose customers need genuine code-level extension and whose team can operate a dispatch and governance layer. It is less appropriate when all integrations are known, static, and safely represented by a small set of internal services; service bindings are simpler in that case.

The central trade-off is flexibility versus operational responsibility. Dynamic Workers can satisfy requirements that a fixed API never anticipated, but every new tenant script increases the need for clear contracts, isolation-aware design, quotas, monitoring, and a pricing model that accounts for CPU and script growth.
