ChromeOS 130, released to the stable channel on October 28, 2024, added a set of productivity features including Quick Insert, Focus, Welcome Recap, improved Drive access, and an AI-powered Recorder app. Availability varies: the Quick Insert keyboard shortcut is broadly available, while some features require Chromebook Plus hardware, specific device support, a Google account, or a subscription.
What ChromeOS 130 changed
ChromeOS 130 was a stable operating-system update focused on everyday workflows: inserting content, managing notifications and tasks, returning to open work, finding Drive files, and capturing audio. It is distinct from Chrome browser version 130, which was released separately and included browser changes across multiple platforms. ChromeOS 130 is a historical release, not the current ChromeOS version.
Google lists October 28, 2024, as the ChromeOS 130 stable release date. Rollouts can be staged, so eligible Chromebooks may not all receive an update at the same time. ChromeOS.dev’s release history and Google’s M130 announcement document the release.
Quick Insert: one panel for common writing tasks
Quick Insert brings several handy tools together: emoji, symbols, GIFs, Google Drive links, quick calculations, and unit conversions. To open it, place the cursor in a compatible text field and press Launcher + f. Choose an item or tool in the panel to add it to the active field.

A dedicated Quick Insert key is a separate hardware convenience. It initially appeared on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus; most Chromebooks can use the keyboard shortcut instead. The distinction matters because Quick Insert began appearing in ChromeOS 129, while M130’s notable expansion was the shortcut across ChromeOS devices—not the feature’s first appearance. Google’s M129 announcement describes the earlier rollout.
If the shortcut does nothing, check that the Chromebook has received the relevant update and that the shortcut has not been changed. Search Settings for “shortcuts” or “Quick Insert,” then try again in a standard text field. Available items can vary; later releases added or expanded Quick Insert capabilities, so M130 should not be read as a promise that every current Quick Insert feature was present in this release.
Focus: timer, Do Not Disturb, tasks, and audio
Open Quick Settings → Focus to start a focus session. Focus combines a timer with Do Not Disturb, Google Tasks, and optional focus audio. Google also described YouTube Music Premium playlists as an option; access to that Premium content requires the relevant subscription and may depend on account and availability.

Focus is a lightweight system-level aid, not a website or app blocker. It can quiet notifications and help organize a work period, but it does not prevent you from opening distracting sites. Users who need site blocking or detailed time tracking will need other tools.
Welcome Recap: pick up where you left off
Welcome Recap can help you resume after startup by surfacing or restoring items such as apps and tabs from a previous session, weather, the next calendar event, recent tabs from other devices, and relevant Drive suggestions. You need to enable it before using it; it does not guarantee that every app, tab, or file will be restored.
Recap can save time if you return to the same work regularly, but it can also reopen clutter or put personal activity in view at startup. Calendar and cross-device suggestions depend on account sign-in and sync settings. Review what appears before enabling it on a shared or privacy-sensitive device.

Tote and Drive suggestions
Tote is the shelf area for recently used or pinned files. M130 added a Suggestions section intended to make useful local and Google Drive files easier to find and pin for offline access. The update also improved access to starred Drive files from the shelf and added Drive suggestions in Launcher and Tote.

A suggested Drive file is not necessarily stored offline. If you need a file without an internet connection, make sure it is explicitly available offline and confirm that it has finished syncing.
Recorder and microphone enhancements
The release introduced a Google AI-powered Recorder app that can record audio, transcribe it, label speakers, and summarize recorded content. These are useful starting points for notes, but not authoritative records: background noise, accents, overlapping speech, and unfamiliar names or technical terms can affect transcription. Check summaries and transcripts before relying on them for minutes, interviews, academic work, or reporting. Obtain appropriate consent before recording other people.

ChromeOS 130 also introduced Studio-style microphone enhancements intended to improve voice audio. Google said users who already had noise cancellation enabled would receive the enhancements by default. This is software processing, not a guarantee of professional recording quality; results can depend on Chromebook hardware and the meeting app. A suitable microphone and quiet room still matter.

Help me read is a Chromebook Plus feature, not a standard benefit of every Chromebook running M130. Its panel can summarize text and answer questions about it. More broadly, Google’s Chromebook Plus designation covers devices meeting its hardware and software requirements; do not assume that every AI-related feature is universal just because it arrived in a ChromeOS release.
Other M130 changes
Release materials also list consumer-facing changes such as appearance effects, Picture-in-Picture, and multi-calendar support, alongside accessibility and managed-device updates. The enterprise and education release notes include features for administrators and managed sessions; those changes may not apply to personal Chromebooks. Should you update or buy a Chromebook for these features?
For an existing compatible Chromebook, M130’s appeal is practical rather than revolutionary. Quick Insert is useful if you often add symbols, links, or calculations; Focus and Welcome Recap can streamline routine work; and Recorder may reduce manual note-taking if you verify its output. The update does not fundamentally redesign ChromeOS.
Quick Insert alone is not a strong reason to replace a working laptop: the Launcher + f shortcut avoids the need for a dedicated key. Consider a Chromebook Plus model when its broader hardware, display, performance, and Chromebook Plus features suit your needs—not just for one keyboard key. The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus was the launch device associated with that key. Check the keyboard layout and current specifications before buying, since model configurations and prices change.
For administrators, the practical question is whether new features fit the organization’s policies for accounts, audio recording, privacy, and managed sessions. Recorder and Welcome Recap deserve particular attention where meetings, student work, or personal files are involved.

Common issues
- Quick Insert will not open: Confirm the shortcut in Settings and test it in a standard text field. A dedicated key is not required.
- Focus is missing: Check Quick Settings and confirm the device has received the update. Labels and placement may differ in later ChromeOS versions.
- Focus audio is unavailable: Check account sign-in, subscription status, and regional availability for YouTube Music Premium content.
- Drive files do not appear: Check connectivity, account sign-in, Drive sync, and starred-file status. Suggestions do not by themselves make a file available offline.
- Help me read is missing: It was Chromebook Plus-only in M130.
- Recorder makes errors: Reduce background noise and manually verify names, numbers, and key details.
