Chrome Remote Desktop on Windows 11 uses a website and a separate Chrome Remote Desktop Host component—not just the Chrome browser. Start by identifying whether the website will not load, the host is missing or offline, the PIN is rejected, or the connection drops. Each points to a different part of the setup.

For your own unattended PC, use Remote Access and its device list. Remote Support uses a temporary code for a session with another person; that code is not your Remote Access PIN. Google’s setup instructions cover both modes.

Identify what is failing

What you see Likely area to check first
The Remote Desktop website will not open Internet connection, browser, VPN, proxy, DNS, or network filtering
The page keeps asking you to set up remote access The Host component may not have installed or registered correctly
Your PC appears offline Power or sleep state, internet connection, Host component, firewall, or registration
The PC is listed but the PIN is rejected Wrong Google Account, incorrect PIN, stale registration, or using the wrong connection mode
It works on a hotspot but not on work or school Wi-Fi Network filtering, proxy, firewall, or administrator policy
The connection drops after a restart Host startup, registration, or network initialization
A support code fails Check that you are using Remote Support, that the code is current, and that the person at the other computer has accepted the session

A sleeping, hibernating, powered-off, or disconnected PC cannot accept a normal remote connection. This is a basic limitation of remote access, not necessarily a Chrome Remote Desktop fault. Microsoft describes the same limitation for its own Remote Desktop connections in its connection FAQ.

Check the host PC and account

  • Make sure the Windows 11 PC is powered on, awake, and connected to the internet.
  • Sign in to the Google Account used to configure the host, and open the Remote Access device list with that account.
  • If it is a laptop, check whether closing the lid puts it to sleep.
  • Temporarily disconnect from a VPN for a test, if permitted by your organization.

To keep a personal host awake while it is plugged in, open Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen and sleep and adjust the sleep setting. Labels can vary by Windows 11 release and device manufacturer. Choose a power setting appropriate for the computer; keeping a laptop awake continuously can increase power use and heat.

  • Designed for easy learning: Energy-efficient batteries and Express Charge support extend your focus and productivity.

  • Ergonomic support: Keep your wrists comfortable with lifted hinges that provide an ergonomic typing angle.

Confirm or complete the Windows Host setup

On the Windows PC you want to reach, open Chrome and visit https://remotedesktop.google.com/access. Under Set up remote access, select the download button and install Chrome Remote Desktop Host. Follow the prompts to name the computer and create a PIN, then return to the page and check whether the computer appears as available. Google notes that setup may request the computer password or additional permissions; see its official setup guide.

If you are trying to connect to your own computer without someone present to approve the session, use the device under Remote Access. Do not enter a temporary Remote Support code in place of the permanent Remote Access PIN.

Restart Windows and the Host component

  1. Restart the Windows 11 host PC and the device you are connecting from.
  2. Reopen Chrome Remote Desktop and check whether the host is online.
  3. If it is still offline, press Windows + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  4. Look for a Chrome Remote Desktop host-related service. If one is present, check whether it is running and try restarting it.
  5. Test the connection again.

The service’s displayed name can vary between releases. Restarting the service is a practical troubleshooting step, not a procedure fully documented on Google’s public setup page; a Google Community discussion offers an example.

Refresh the Remote Access registration

If the PC is listed but will not connect, try registering it again. This is a practical step rather than a guaranteed token-reset fix; community guidance describes the approach.

  1. On the host, open the Remote Access page while signed in to the correct Google Account.
  2. Turn off Remote Access for the affected computer and wait briefly.
  3. Turn it back on. If prompted, install or relaunch the Host component.
  4. Choose a computer name and create a new PIN, then test from the client device.

If the page does not offer a way to re-enable the computer or the setup flow fails, proceed to a clean Host reinstall.

Test the firewall, VPN, and network

Chrome may browse normally while remote-access traffic is blocked. Start with a network comparison: if permitted, connect the Windows PC temporarily to a phone hotspot, or try connecting from a different client network. Disconnect from a VPN for the test if that is allowed.

  • Works on the hotspot: The original network may be filtering Google services or applying proxy, firewall, or policy controls. Ask its administrator to review access using Google’s network requirements and URL guidance.
  • Fails on every network: Check the Host installation, registration, Google Account, and local security software.
  • Works only from the same local network: Firewall traversal, proxy rules, or network segmentation may be involved.

To inspect the Windows firewall’s app permissions, search Start for Allow an app through Windows Firewall, select Change settings, and look for Chrome Remote Desktop or its Host component. Allow it on the appropriate network profile if it is listed and your network policy permits it. Avoid permanently disabling the firewall. If you briefly test whether third-party security software is responsible, disconnect from untrusted networks, re-enable protection immediately, and only then consider a narrow exception for the identified component.

Google’s network guide focuses on access to required Google URLs; do not assume a universal port list applies to every network or connection path. Managed Chrome installations may also be restricted by administrator policy. Google documents the RemoteAccessHostFirewallTraversal policy and related controls in its Chrome policy documentation. A registry policy value of 0 disables host firewall traversal. Do not change administrator-managed policy settings yourself; contact your work or school administrator.

Update Chrome and Windows, then capture the error

  1. In Chrome, open chrome://settings/help, let it check for updates, and restart Chrome if an update is installed.
  2. Open Settings → Windows Update, install pending updates, and restart Windows.
  3. If the problem continues, record the Windows edition and build with winver, and the Chrome version from chrome://version.
  4. Write down the exact error, whether the host appears online or offline, whether you are troubleshooting the host or client, and whether the failure began after an update.
  5. Note whether the connection works from another network.

An update occurring just before the failure does not by itself establish that the update caused it. The Host component and its registration are separate from the browser, so test those separately before attributing the problem to a particular Chrome or Windows version.

Reinstall Chrome Remote Desktop Host

Use a clean reinstall after checking power, network access, service status, and registration.

  1. On the host PC, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and search for Chrome Remote Desktop Host.
  2. Uninstall it if it is present, then restart Windows.
  3. Open the official Remote Access page, download the Host component, and install it. Approve administrator elevation if Windows requests it.
  4. Set up the computer name and PIN, then confirm that the PC appears as available.
  5. Restart Windows once more and test an unattended connection if access after reboot is important.

Do not delete registry keys, system folders, or arbitrary host files as a routine cleanup step. If Chrome itself—not just the Host component—needs removing, Google documents its Windows 11 uninstall path in Chrome Help.

Choose an alternative only if it fits your Windows edition

Microsoft’s built-in Remote Desktop host is an option for Windows-to-Windows access when the host runs Windows 11 Pro. Microsoft states that the host PC must use a Pro edition; check Settings → System → About → Windows specifications → Edition before switching. Windows 11 Home users can use third-party remote-access software such as Chrome Remote Desktop without that Pro host requirement. Microsoft’s setup instructions explain its Remote Desktop feature and requirements.

Microsoft Remote Desktop is a separate product with different networking, authentication, and firewall requirements. It is not a repair for Chrome Remote Desktop. For business use that needs technician workflows, device management, or centralized administration, a commercial remote-support service may be a better fit; check the vendor’s current terms and features before choosing one.

Protect access to the computer

  • Choose a unique, strong Remote Access PIN and protect the Google Account used to register the host with two-step verification.
  • Remove computers from the Remote Access list when they are no longer yours to manage.
  • Disable Remote Access when you no longer need it.
  • Share a temporary Remote Support code only with someone you trust, and never publish it in a public forum or send it to an unsolicited caller.

Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop data and authentication documentation describes information processed for authentication and host registration.
