Google reported on June 4, 2026 that Chrome scored 61 on Speedometer 3.1 and 469 on JetStream 3, calling the results dual records across browsers. Both scores came from a single disclosed setup: a MacBook Pro with M5 running macOS 26.0.1. They are notable benchmark results—not proof that Chrome will be faster on every computer or every website.
What is Speedometer 3.1?
Speedometer is a browser benchmark designed to estimate how responsive web applications feel while users interact with them. Rather than timing one isolated JavaScript operation, it runs application-like workloads that exercise several parts of a browser.
Google describes workloads involving HTML parsing; JavaScript and JSON; JavaScript-to-DOM interaction; adding and removing elements; text shaping; CSS and layout; and rendering pixels. The Speedometer 3 family also expanded beyond framework-based to-do apps to include activities such as navigating news, working with charts, and editing text.

The benchmark was developed collaboratively by teams from major browser-engine projects. Its creators aimed to make the workloads more representative of the evolving web, while acknowledging that a finite set of tests cannot reproduce the entire web. WebKit’s technical explanation of Speedometer 3.0 says its harness schedules work around requestAnimationFrame callbacks to better capture rendering associated with interactions. It describes the score as based on the reciprocal of the geometric mean of workload totals. That account explains version 3.0; it does not establish that every implementation detail is unchanged in later 3.1 revisions.

How much faster is Chrome on Speedometer?
Google says Chrome’s Speedometer 3.1 result was 5% higher than in its previous benchmark-performance post, published about a year earlier. This is Google’s comparison for that period, not a universal estimate of how much faster Chrome is for any particular person.
That 5% comparison should be kept separate from Google’s June 2025 report: the earlier post said Speedometer 3.1 performance had improved 22% since August 2024. Google updated that post on June 10, 2025, correcting its earlier description of the benchmark as Speedometer 3 and revising the improvement figure from 10% to 22%. The 2025 and 2026 figures cover different comparison periods.

- Screen Size: 11.6"
Google also reported a JetStream 3 score of 469, which it said was 10% higher than at the start of 2026. JetStream is a separate benchmark, so its score and period should not be combined with the Speedometer result.
What does Google attribute the gains to?
In its June 4, 2026 announcement, Google attributed the work behind the results to changes in JavaScript, WebAssembly, and Blink, Chrome’s rendering engine. These are Google’s engineering explanations, not independent measurements of users’ experience.
Rank #3
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
JavaScript
Google says it added compiler fast paths for common operations, including asynchronous tasks such as microtask dispatch and resolving await, as well as sorting and string comparison. It also cites changes to optimization heuristics and inlining decisions.
WebAssembly
The changes Google lists include adjustments to internal data structures, SIMD code generation, register allocation, reuse of compiler temporary memory, and the overhead of calls between JavaScript and WebAssembly. Google says some of this work can benefit AI, cryptography, and interpreter workloads.

Blink rendering
Google points to caching for style resolution and DOM lookups, faster attribute handling, broader caching of data URLs, and SIMD-assisted string copying and HTML parsing. These changes describe work on browser internals; the benchmark score alone does not show that all sites or tasks receive the same benefit.

Does the record mean Chrome is faster on your computer?
Not necessarily. The reported Speedometer and JetStream scores were measured on one MacBook Pro with M5 running macOS 26.0.1. The announcement does not provide a range across different computers or operating systems, nor does it establish how Chrome compares with named rival browsers under the same current test conditions.

Speedometer’s application-like workloads make it more informative than a single synthetic operation, but they remain a sample. Your everyday experience also depends on the sites you use, your device, browser version, extensions, and other conditions. A benchmark record is evidence about a defined test setup—not a guarantee of a particular improvement in your own browsing.
For a meaningful comparison between browsers, use the same Speedometer version and align the hardware, operating system, and test conditions. Google’s phrase “dual records across browsers” is its characterization of the reported results; without a contemporaneous competitor-score table in the announcement, it should not be treated as a detailed ranking against specific browsers.
