To capture video in Chrome, choose a recorder that can capture the right source: a browser tab, a window, or the entire screen. Chrome extensions can use different capture workflows for these scopes, and recording may stop when you navigate unless the extension is designed to continue in the background. If you only need a still image, take a screenshot instead; a screen recorder creates a video.

Choose between a screenshot and a screen recording

A screenshot is a single still image. A screen recording is a video of activity over time, useful for a tutorial, lesson, walkthrough, or bug report. This guide is about video capture through Chrome extensions and Chrome’s screen-capture APIs; it does not prescribe one extension as universally best.

Before installing anything, decide what the recording needs to show and hear. A tab-only recording is often enough for a website demo. A window or display capture is needed when the task spans multiple applications or parts of the desktop. If narration matters, check microphone capture; if the site’s sound matters, check tab audio. A webcam overlay, editing, annotations, and hosted sharing are workflow choices, not prerequisites for recording.

Match the capture method to the area you need

Record only the active tab

Chrome’s tabCapture API provides a media stream from a tab after the extension is invoked, such as by clicking its action button. The API reference describes capture of the active tab and requires the extension to have activeTab access. Capture can persist through navigation within that tab until the tab is closed or the stream is closed.

Tab capture is narrower than recording a whole display, but it has an audio consideration: obtaining a tab’s media stream can stop its audio from playing locally unless the extension routes that audio back for playback. If you need the site’s sound, confirm that the recorder captures the intended source and preserves playback as you expect.

Let the user select a tab, window, or screen

Chrome’s desktopCapture API supports a user-facing picker for screen, window, or tab sources. The extension must request the desktopCapture permission. The user chooses a source, and the extension receives a temporary, single-use stream ID; if the picker is cancelled, the ID is empty. It expires after a few seconds if unused, so an extension must use it promptly.

Chrome’s extension guide also describes getDisplayMedia(), which shows a dialog for choosing a tab, window, or screen. The visible selection step means the user chooses what to share rather than an extension silently selecting a display source.

What to check before installing a recorder

  • Capture area: Confirm the extension can record the tab, window, or entire display you need.
  • Audio: Distinguish microphone narration from tab audio. If you need both, verify that the recorder supports both in the workflow and test a short clip.
  • Camera: A webcam overlay is optional. Check whether it is captured in the browser workflow or requires the vendor’s desktop app.
  • After navigation: If you need recording to continue while changing pages, check how the extension handles navigation.
  • Output and sharing: Find out whether the workflow downloads a local video or uploads it for link sharing, and whether editing or annotation is included.
  • Permissions: Review the requested permissions and install only an extension you trust.

Chrome’s permission list describes desktopCapture with the warning “Capture content of your screen.” That warning explains the permission’s potential scope; it is not by itself proof that an extension misuses data. Chrome Web Store help also explains that permissions can allow access and recommends understanding permission warnings. Optional permissions may be requested after installation. See Chrome’s permission list and Chrome Web Store help.

Understand recording through navigation and in the background

Implementation affects whether a recording survives changes to the page. Chrome’s screen capture guide says a content-script recording using getDisplayMedia() ends when the user navigates to a new page. For background recording across navigation, the guide describes using an offscreen document.

The same guide notes that beginning with Chrome 116, a service worker can request a tabCapture stream ID following a user gesture and pass it to an offscreen document. This is a version-specific approach; do not assume it works on every older Chrome version. The guide also warns that a popup-based capture approach only works for audio: starting video capture changes focus and closes the popup.

For a recording that must span navigation, check the extension’s documented workflow rather than assuming all tab recorders behave alike. Keep the relevant tab open, and make a short test recording before relying on the result.

Examples: Screencastify and Loom

These are examples of vendor-described workflows, not a comprehensive ranking or hands-on comparison. Features and plan limits can vary by region or plan, so verify the details on the product pages before choosing.

Tool Vendor-described workflow Consider it when
Screencastify Its Chrome extension page describes recording a browser tab, desktop, or webcam, with editing and sharing in the workflow. A browser-based editing workflow or an education-oriented assignment fits your needs. Check current free-plan limits, storage, and sharing details.
Loom Its Chrome recorder page describes screen, camera, and audio recording, link sharing, and browser editing. It distinguishes basic Chrome features from some advanced desktop-app features. You want a hosted video and link-sharing workflow. Check current plan limits and whether a feature you need requires the desktop app.

Compare the actual workflow you need: recording scope, audio sources, webcam, navigation behavior, editing, local download or hosted sharing, plan restrictions, and permissions. A product page describes the vendor’s offering; it does not establish that it is best for every user.

DIY: build a minimal tab recorder extension

The following is a minimal starting point for an extension that captures the active tab after the user clicks its action. It records a tab stream into a WebM file and downloads it. It is not a production-ready recorder: it has no controls for pause, audio routing, editing, or resilient storage, and the user must test it with their target Chrome version and site.

Create a folder with these two files. In manifest.json, declare the permissions and a service worker:

{
  "manifest_version": 3,
  "name": "Tab Recorder",
  "version": "1.0",
  "permissions": ["activeTab", "tabCapture", "downloads"],
  "background": { "service_worker": "background.js" },
  "action": { "default_title": "Start or stop tab recording" }
}

Put this in background.js:

let recorder;
let chunks = [];

chrome.action.onClicked.addListener(async (tab) => {
  if (recorder?.state === "recording") {
    recorder.stop();
    return;
  }

  try {
    const stream = await chrome.tabCapture.capture({
      audio: true,
      video: true
    });

    if (!stream) throw new Error("No tab stream was returned");

    chunks = [];
    recorder = new MediaRecorder(stream, { mimeType: "video/webm" });
    recorder.ondataavailable = (event) => {
      if (event.data.size) chunks.push(event.data);
    };
    recorder.onstop = async () => {
      const blob = new Blob(chunks, { type: "video/webm" });
      const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
      await chrome.downloads.download({
        url,
        filename: "tab-recording.webm",
        saveAs: true
      });
      stream.getTracks().forEach((track) => track.stop());
      setTimeout(() => URL.revokeObjectURL(url), 60_000);
      recorder = undefined;
    };
    recorder.start();
  } catch (error) {
    console.error("Could not capture the tab:", error);
  }
});
  1. Open chrome://extensions in Chrome.
  2. Turn on Developer mode.
  3. Select Load unpacked and choose the folder containing the two files.
  4. Open the tab you intend to record, click the extension’s toolbar button to start, then click it again to stop. The browser prompts you to save the WebM file.

This example asks for tab audio and video, but audio behavior depends on the capture stream and routing. In particular, tab audio may stop playing locally unless the extension routes it back. The example does not add that routing. A robust extension also needs explicit recording-state UI, error reporting, cleanup on interruptions, and testing for the required Chrome versions and media formats.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a still screenshot of a webpage rather than a video, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a screen-video recorder. For a simple screenshot call, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting common capture problems

The capture picker was cancelled or no source appeared

With desktopCapture, cancelling the picker returns an empty stream ID. Choose a source and retry; an extension cannot use that cancelled selection. With getDisplayMedia(), make a selection in Chrome’s dialog when it appears.

Recording stops when you change pages

A content-script getDisplayMedia() recording ends on navigation according to Chrome’s guide. Use an extension that supports background capture across navigation, or keep the recording on the same page. Chrome’s guide describes an offscreen document approach for background capture.

The tab’s sound is missing or no longer plays locally

Check that you selected or enabled tab audio rather than only microphone audio. Chrome’s tabCapture reference notes that capturing a tab stream can stop local playback unless the extension routes audio back. Test with a short clip and confirm both the saved recording and local playback behave as needed.

The extension closes when video starts

Chrome’s guide explains that popup-based capture is unsuitable for video because video capture changes focus and closes the popup; the popup approach only works for audio. Start video capture through a workflow designed to survive popup closure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A capture stream fails to start

For tab capture, invoke the extension from its action button in the tab you intend to record and check that its declared permissions include the required tab access. For desktop capture, confirm the user granted the requested permission and selected a source. If using the Chrome 116 service-worker stream-ID technique, confirm the browser version and that the stream ID is passed and used promptly.

Performance, reliability, and privacy

Video capture processes a live media stream, so keep the recording focused on the required tab or area, avoid unnecessary applications, and make a brief test before a long session. The Chrome API descriptions specify capture workflows, not a universal performance or reliability guarantee; results depend on the extension, page, device, and chosen source.

Screen recording can include information visible in the selected tab, window, or display. Choose a trusted extension, review the permissions before granting them, and close sensitive tabs or desktop content that should not appear. A permission warning describes potential access; assess the specific extension and its declared workflow rather than treating the warning alone as proof of misuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Chrome itself have a built-in extension that records any screen without a picker?

The documented Chrome extension workflows involve user invocation or a visible source-selection dialog; desktop or screen capture is not a silent, arbitrary extension capture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a Chrome extension record both microphone and tab audio?

Some product workflows describe audio recording, but support and routing vary by extension. Check the recorder’s documented audio controls and make a short test with the sources you need.

Is ScreenshotNeo a screen recorder?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures webpage screenshots or PDFs; it does not record screen video.
