A blank Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) screenshot is a symptom, not one diagnosis. First determine whether Page.captureScreenshot returned image data at all. Then verify the requested clip and capture surface, wait for the frame your application actually paints, and compare headless/headful dimensions and scale. The experimental HeadlessExperimental.beginFrame path has a documented renderer-initialization failure mode, but that does not explain every blank Page.captureScreenshot.
Start by separating missing data from blank pixels
For a successful Page.captureScreenshot call, the protocol response contains a base64-encoded image in its data field. The method supports PNG, JPEG and WebP output, optional clipping, capture beyond the viewport and surface capture. See the Page domain reference.
- No
datafield: inspect the command error, target attachment, renderer readiness and (if applicable)HeadlessExperimental.beginFrameinitialization. - Valid image, but white, transparent or otherwise empty pixels: inspect clip geometry, viewport/screen assumptions, surface selection and application readiness.
- Image contains some content but not the expected page: check navigation state, redirects, authentication, responsive breakpoints and device scale.
Do not treat a successfully decoded image as proof that the page rendered correctly. Chromium’s protocol browser tests decode screenshots and check actual pixel colors, which is a useful model for your own diagnostics: validate both the transport result and the pixels.
1. Log the complete CDP response
Capture the response before trying parameter changes. Record the Chrome/Chromium version, operating mode, target ID, viewport, device scale factor, format, clip, and the exact protocol error (if any).

A raw command sent over your CDP WebSocket looks like this:
{"id":1,"method":"Page.captureScreenshot","params":{"format":"png","captureBeyondViewport":false,"fromSurface":true}}
Check all of the following:
- The response has the same numeric
idas your request. - An
errorobject is not present. result.dataexists and is non-empty.- Base64 decoding produces a valid PNG, JPEG or WebP file (matching the requested format).
Save the decoded bytes and inspect dimensions with an image library. A zero-byte file, a decoder error or a missing field points to protocol/renderer setup—not CSS colors or page layout.
2. Check the requested region and viewport
Clips can select empty space
If you pass clip, verify its x, y, width, height and scale. Coordinates are CSS-pixel geometry in the page’s layout space. A clip positioned below the current document, outside a frame, or with an unintended scale can produce an image that appears blank even though the page is visible elsewhere.

Understand captureBeyondViewport
The protocol reference documents captureBeyondViewport as defaulting to false. If the requested area lies outside the visible viewport, explicitly evaluate whether you need beyond-viewport capture and whether your clip coordinates are correct. This is a diagnostic check, not a universal fix.
For a first test, remove clip and capture the current viewport. If that works, add the clip back with measured bounds. For full-page work, obtain document dimensions from the page (for example, by evaluating document.documentElement.scrollWidth and scrollHeight) and compare them with the clip you send.

3. Compare surface and view capture
The fromSurface parameter defaults to true in the reference. It controls whether the compositor surface or the view is captured. If you are experimenting with this setting, change only it, capture both results, decode them and compare dimensions and pixels. Do not assume that flipping it fixes all blank images; a difference identifies a capture-surface issue that needs to be understood in your rendering setup.
{"id":3,"method":"Page.captureScreenshot","params":{"format":"png","fromSurface":false}}
Keep the viewport, clip, format and scale identical while comparing. Otherwise you cannot tell which change affected the result.
4. Wait for the frame your application paints
A completed navigation event means that navigation progressed; it does not guarantee that a client-rendered application has painted its final content. Wait on an application-specific readiness condition, then capture. Examples include a root element gaining a known class, a data-loaded attribute, a stable heading, or an image finishing its own load. A fixed delay can hide a race on one machine and fail on another, so prefer a condition you can inspect.
Before capturing, use CDP runtime evaluation to verify the condition:
{"id":4,"method":"Runtime.evaluate","params":{"expression":"document.querySelector('[data-ready=\"true\"]') !== null","returnByValue":true}}
If your page has no reliable marker, combine a short delay with checks for the presence and dimensions of the main content. Also verify that you are attached to the page target rather than an about:blank, worker or unrelated iframe target.

5. Treat HeadlessExperimental.beginFrame as a separate route
The experimental HeadlessExperimental.beginFrame method is not a drop-in replacement for ordinary Page.captureScreenshot. Its documentation warns: “Note that capturing a screenshot can fail, for example, during renderer initialization.” In that case, no screenshot data is returned. It also requires a target created with BeginFrameControl.
Recommended Free Tools
If you use this route:
- Confirm the target was created with the required BeginFrameControl capability.
- Check the
beginFrameresponse for an absent screenshot payload, not just a transport-level success. - Do not request a screenshot during renderer startup; issue the frame after the target is initialized and the page has reached your readiness condition.
- If initialization still fails, reproduce the same page with ordinary
Page.captureScreenshotto determine whether the problem is specific to explicit frame driving.
The documented warning applies to this experimental method. It should not be generalized to every blank screenshot returned by Page.captureScreenshot. See the HeadlessExperimental reference.
6. Check headless versus headful assumptions
Headless mode reports a virtual headless screen configuration, while headful mode reports the physical screen configuration. A page can therefore choose a different responsive layout, device-pixel ratio or media-query branch between modes. The Emulation domain documents the relevant screen and viewport controls.
For every failing capture, record:
- Chrome/Chromium build and command-line mode.
- CSS viewport width and height.
- Device scale factor and emulated screen dimensions.
- Screenshot pixel dimensions.
- Whether a clip, beyond-viewport capture or surface capture was used.
Run the smallest possible comparison: same URL, same viewport, same scale and same method, first headful then headless. If only one mode is blank, inspect emulation and compositor assumptions before changing page code.
7. Use pixel-level checks instead of visual guesses
A valid image filled with white or transparent pixels is different evidence from a missing data result. Decode the image and sample known locations or compare against an expected background color. Chromium’s protocol tests exercise decoded bitmap content, background overrides and transparency cases; they also check protocol errors and missing data.

Useful automated assertions include:
- File signature matches the requested format.
- Width and height are greater than zero and match the intended viewport or clip.
- A known page element contributes non-background pixels.
- Alpha is non-zero where opaque content is expected.
When a test fails, retain the decoded artifact and the JSON response. This lets you distinguish a renderer failure from a page that intentionally paints a white or transparent canvas.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely evidence | Next action |
|---|---|---|
No result.data |
Protocol error, detached target or renderer initialization | Log the full response; verify target attachment and renderer readiness; if using beginFrame, check BeginFrameControl and initialization timing. |
| Valid image, all white/transparent | Pixels decoded successfully but contain no visible content | Remove the clip, verify CSS viewport and page readiness, then compare fromSurface values. |
| Only a clipped capture is blank | Clip does not overlap painted content or requires beyond-viewport capture | Measure document bounds and test a viewport capture before restoring the clip. |
| Headless blank, headful works | Different virtual screen, scale or responsive branch | Record emulation values and force identical viewport/device-scale settings for comparison. |
| Large capture fails intermittently | Size-related browser behavior or build-specific issue | Reduce dimensions and test a current, pinned Chromium build. A tracker listing exists at Chromium issue 40724721, but the available listing does not establish affected versions, status or a verified workaround. |
Reliability and performance practices
- Pin and report versions: renderer behavior can vary by Chrome/Chromium build; include the exact build in failure logs.
- Prefer readiness signals: application conditions are more meaningful than a universal sleep.
- Start small: validate a viewport PNG before adding full-page clips, JPEG/WebP compression, retina scale or PDF-like dimensions.
- Change one variable: isolate clip,
captureBeyondViewport,fromSurface, viewport and scale changes. - Keep artifacts: store response JSON, decoded image, dimensions and console/page errors together.
- Bound retries: retry only transient target or renderer failures; do not hide deterministic clip or readiness bugs with unlimited retries.

open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the complete parameter list and response details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS/JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers/cookies/user agents, timezone and geolocation, transparency, resizing, TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Does a successful CDP response guarantee visible page content?
No. It guarantees that image data was returned, not that the pixels contain the content you expected. Decode the image, verify dimensions and sample or compare pixels.
Should I always set captureBeyondViewport to true?
No. The documented default is false. Set it only when your intended region lies beyond the viewport, and verify clip geometry first.

The Bottom Line
Diagnose blank CDP screenshots in this order: verify returned data, decode and inspect pixels, remove or recalculate clips, confirm surface and viewport settings, wait for an application-ready frame, and treat HeadlessExperimental.beginFrame initialization separately. This sequence identifies whether the failure is in the protocol response, geometry, compositor or page readiness.
