Choose an image when you need a visual snapshot for a page preview, image workflow, or visual comparison; choose a PDF when the result needs to behave like a paginated document for printing or sharing. In browser automation, these are different outputs: a screenshot captures an image, while Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() uses print CSS by default, so a PDF can look different from the screen.
Image or PDF: which should you choose?

This is practical guidance rather than a formal format standard. Puppeteer exposes screenshot capture and PDF generation as separate browser operations: see its Page.screenshot() documentation and Page.pdf() documentation.
Which image format should you use?
Set the image type deliberately. Puppeteer documents PNG as the screenshot type default; its screenshot options also allow a quality value for applicable formats, but quality does not apply to PNG. When you supply a path, Puppeteer can infer the format from the filename extension. See the living ScreenshotOptions reference and verify the behavior for the Puppeteer version in your project.
PNG
PNG is a sensible choice when you want the documented Puppeteer default, lossless image output, or need to consider transparency via the screenshot background option. Puppeteer exposes omitBackground to omit a default white background where supported. Do not assume transparency works identically in every environment, or that PNG is best for every screenshot: the cited documentation does not provide a PNG-versus-JPEG-versus-WebP benchmark.

JPEG
Choose JPEG only when your receiving workflow accepts it and you prefer a lossy image output with a configurable quality option. Check the resulting image at the intended size: quality settings trade image fidelity against file size, and there is no single setting established here as right for all pages.
WebP and AVIF
WebP and AVIF are worth considering when the captured image is destined for web delivery and the target browsers and downstream tools support the chosen format. Chrome for Developers discusses their compression benefits and compatibility considerations for web images, but that guidance is not a direct benchmark of screenshot pipelines or proof that either format always produces a smaller capture: Serve images in modern formats. Confirm that your capture tool can emit the format and that every consumer can open it before adopting it.
How to decide among image formats
- Use PNG when lossless output or a transparency-related workflow matters and your capture pipeline supports it.
- Use JPEG when lossy output is acceptable and the destination expects JPEG.
- Use WebP or AVIF for web delivery only after checking capture support and compatibility with the browsers, applications, or upload services that will receive the file.
- Compare representative captures from your own pages; text, gradients, photographs, background transparency, and file size can behave differently.
Why can a PDF look different from the browser?
Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() generates a PDF with the print CSS media type. Print styles can hide or rearrange elements, change colors, or alter spacing; page breaks also divide content into sheets. The API documentation reports version 25.12.0 and describes this print-media behavior: Puppeteer Page.pdf().
If the PDF should reflect screen styling, configure the page for screen media before calling page.pdf(). That changes the media query context; it does not turn a paginated PDF into a screenshot. Review the output for print-specific colors, missing backgrounds, clipped content, and awkward page breaks. Print color adjustment can affect exact color rendering, so do not treat a PDF as a guaranteed color-accurate record.

Capture an image or PDF with Puppeteer
Install Node.js and Puppeteer in a project, then save the following as capture.cjs. Puppeteer’s package manages a compatible browser for its standard setup. The script opens the target, waits for the page load event, and writes both a PNG and a PDF using screen media for the PDF. Replace the example URL with a page you are permitted to capture.

For example, an explicit JPEG capture can use await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.jpg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 85, fullPage: true });; quality is not applicable to PNG. Check the options reference for the installed version and available types.
Adapt the capture to the page
- Capture only the viewport: omit
fullPage: truefrom the screenshot call. - Control PDF dimensions: choose a paper format such as A4, or use PDF margin and page-size options appropriate to your output. If the page defines print page dimensions in CSS,
preferCSSPageSize: truegives that CSS precedence. - Keep print styling instead: omit
page.emulateMediaType('screen')to retain the documented print-media default. - Include background colors and graphics in the PDF: use
printBackground: true; inspect the resulting PDF because page styles and color adjustment can still affect appearance. - Capture dynamic content: wait for a page-specific selector or other application readiness signal when the load event or network-idle condition does not mean the content is ready.
Full-page capture does not guarantee that every lazy-loaded image or changing element is complete. Some pages load content only after scrolling or interaction. For reliable comparisons, use the same viewport, device scale, page state, and wait condition for each run.

Check the output before relying on it
- Open the actual file, not just the response or filename; confirm that it is the intended image or PDF format.
- Check that the page finished rendering and that important content, images, and fonts are present.
- For images, inspect transparency, text edges, and whether the format is accepted by the destination.
- For PDFs, review styling, page boundaries, backgrounds, and color appearance in a PDF viewer and, if relevant, on paper.
- For repeatable visual comparisons, keep the browser version, viewport, device scale, URL state, and capture timing consistent.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
The navigation completion condition may have occurred before application content appeared, or the page may require scrolling or interaction to load content. Wait for a meaningful selector with page.waitForSelector(), increase the navigation timeout for slow pages, and inspect the page state before capturing. Do not treat a blank capture as proof that the site itself is empty.

fullPage: true captures beyond the viewport, while its absence captures the viewport. Dynamic or lazy-loaded sections can change page height; scroll or wait for the relevant content before capture and verify the final dimensions.
The PDF differs from the screen
Puppeteer uses print CSS media by default. Call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf() if screen media is the desired styling, then inspect page breaks and colors. If the output is intended to be print-oriented, retain print media and correct the page’s print stylesheet instead.

The PDF omits backgrounds or colors look different
Set printBackground: true when background graphics should be included, and review the PDF’s print color behavior. Browser print adjustments and CSS can affect exact color rendering; a screenshot may be more appropriate for a visual snapshot.
The image format or quality setting fails
Check that the selected format is supported by the installed Puppeteer/browser version and by the receiving application. The quality option does not apply to PNG. If a path extension is used to infer the type, ensure the extension matches the intended output.
The browser cannot launch or the script times out
Confirm Puppeteer and its browser are installed in the project environment, then check the error output for launch or navigation failures. A slow or continuously active page may not satisfy a network-idle condition; use a selector-based readiness check for the content you need and set a suitable timeout.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Image and PDF generation both require the page to load and render; full-page images and PDFs may involve substantially more content than a viewport-only screenshot. Output size depends on page content, selected format, dimensions, and quality settings. The cited documentation does not establish fixed file-size savings or comparative speed for the formats, so measure representative pages in the intended environment rather than relying on a universal rule.

For repeatable captures, make the rendered state deterministic: fix viewport and scale, wait on the right content, and avoid capturing during animations or late-loading updates when they matter to the comparison. Treat either output as a record of the browser-rendered state at capture time, not as a guarantee of accessibility, archival compliance, legal validity, or complete reproduction of all interactive behavior.
