China unveiled the exterior design of its planned lunar-landing spacesuit in September 2024 and named it Wangyu in February 2025. The suit is a visible milestone in the country’s effort to land astronauts on the Moon by or before 2030—not evidence that the landing system is flight-ready. China’s plans also depend on a new rocket, crew spacecraft, lander and rover, all still in development.
What China revealed about the Wangyu suit
The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) presented the suit’s exterior design in Chongqing on September 28, 2024. Astronauts Zhai Zhigang and Wang Yaping modeled it and demonstrated walking, squatting, bending, kneeling and climbing a ladder. Those demonstrations showed movement in a displayed suit; they did not establish its performance in lunar conditions or confirm flight qualification. The agency said development began in 2020. CMSA’s announcement
On February 12, 2025, China announced the name Wangyu, translated by the official English-language government site as “gazing into the cosmos.” It was chosen through a public naming solicitation that received about 9,000 submissions. The name echoes Feitian, China’s existing extravehicular suit, translated as “flying into space.” Official naming announcement

Features described by the agency
- A white exterior with red stripes: upper-limb markings inspired by Dunhuang “flying apsaras” ribbons and lower-limb markings designed to evoke rocket-launch flames. The agency presents these as visual and cultural design elements.
- Materials intended to protect the wearer from lunar thermal conditions and dust.
- A panoramic, anti-glare visor, cameras for close-up and long-distance recording, and an integrated control panel.
- Flexible gloves described as reliable, with joints adapted for movement in low gravity.
- A lightweight design intended for lunar-surface activity.
These are disclosed design aims and features, not published performance measurements. The announcement does not establish how the suit performs under operational conditions.

Why a lunar surface suit has a different job
A suit for a lunar excursion must keep its wearer alive in vacuum while supporting useful work on the ground. It must provide pressure and life support, manage heat, protect against radiation, preserve visibility and communications, and let an astronaut walk, bend, kneel, climb and handle tools. Lunar gravity is lower than Earth’s, but that does not remove the effort and mobility demands of working in a bulky pressurized suit.
Dust is a particularly difficult surface hazard. Lunar regolith is abrasive, and repeated contact can threaten joints, seals, fabrics, tools and spacecraft systems. A station spacewalk, by contrast, is generally organized around handrails and workstations rather than walking over loose surface material. Lunar suit design must balance protection against dust and temperature with flexibility and manageable mass. A technical review in Nature Reviews Materials discusses these broader challenges: lunar spacesuit design and materials.

- Size:The measurement results in the size chart are manually measured, and there may be an error of 1-2cm with the actual size.We recommend using height/chest waist and hip measurements to determine which size you will fit.If at the top of the size range, please consider moving up a size.
- Easy to wear and move relaxly, suit for the most people, you will be a spceman in the moon.
- Applicable:This mens astronaut costume is perfect for cosplay, christmas, cosplay party, stage performance, themed party role play, birthday party etc.
Those are general engineering requirements, not proof of Wangyu’s specifications. More protection can add mass or restrict movement; flexibility can complicate dust-resistant seals; and cameras, controls and thermal systems bring power and reliability demands. Without published test results, the disclosed appearance and demonstrations cannot resolve those trade-offs.

China’s official objective is to land astronauts on the Moon by or before 2030, conduct scientific exploration and technology experiments, and build an independent Earth–Moon transportation and surface-operation capability. The announced mission concept uses two launches: one sends the crewed spacecraft toward lunar orbit, and another sends the lander. The spacecraft and lander are to rendezvous and dock in lunar orbit; the crew transfers to the lander for descent and surface exploration, including rover operations. The crew then returns using the lunar spacecraft architecture. Official description of the mission concept
| Element | Role in the plan |
|---|---|
| Long March-10 | Next-generation crewed lunar launch vehicle. |
| Mengzhou | Next-generation crewed spacecraft; the name is translated as “Dream Vessel.” |
| Lanyue | Creed lunar lander; the name is translated as “Embracing the Moon.” |
| Wangyu | Lunar-landing spacesuit. |
| Tansuo | Planned crewed lunar rover; the name means “explore the unknown.” |

What progress has been reported beyond the suit?
Chinese official updates describe prototype production and ground testing across the crewed lunar program. A China government update in October 2024 reported work on the Long March-10, Mengzhou, Lanyue, suit and rover, including an integrated spacecraft airdrop test, a separation test involving the lander’s two modules, testing of the rocket’s first-stage three-engine power system, and high-altitude simulation testing of a hydrogen–oxygen engine. How robotic lunar missions can help
China’s robotic Chang’e program can inform planning for later crewed operations, though it cannot validate every crewed system. The May 2026 government update said Chang’e-7 was scheduled for the second half of 2026 to survey the south-polar environment and resources using orbiting, landing, roving and hopping elements. Chang’e-7 and lunar program update
South-polar reconnaissance can build knowledge of terrain, illumination, possible volatiles and landing hazards. Robotic missions can also test navigation, communications, mobility and resource-survey techniques. But a robotic mission’s success would not, by itself, demonstrate that a crewed lander can land and ascend, or that its life support and surface EVA systems are ready.
What is still unknown about Wangyu and the landing
The cited official releases do not state Wangyu’s mass, operating pressure, mission duration, oxygen or carbon-dioxide-removal performance, thermal-control capacity, radiation-shielding specifications, dust-tolerance test results, glove-force measurements, sizing range, or maximum walking distance or excursion duration. They also do not confirm whether the displayed design is the final flight configuration.
The cited program updates do not provide a confirmed crew, launch date, crewed landing site or complete mission schedule. They describe tests and development work, with key vehicle verification and maiden flights still ahead. These unpublished details should be treated as unknowns—not as evidence of technical weakness.
For now, the accurate distinction is between an announced design and a qualified, integrated system. A suit cannot compensate for unresolved launch, rendezvous, landing, ascent, navigation, life-support or mission-operations challenges, and the public disclosures do not support a technical ranking against other countries’ lunar suits.
