China’s GJ-11 stealth combat drone has appeared in rare footage flying with a J-20 fighter and a J-16D electronic-warfare aircraft. That is meaningful evidence of flight testing and formation cooperation, but it does not verify the widely repeated claim that the drone reaches 690 mph—or prove it is ready for combat.
The GJ-11, also known as the Sharp Sword, is a jet-powered, low-observable unmanned combat air vehicle. Public information points to a platform advancing toward operational use, while key performance and readiness details remain undisclosed.
What the November 2025 footage shows
Chinese state-linked media released footage in November 2025 showing the GJ-11 taxiing, taking off and flying in formation. The video showed it alongside a J-20 stealth fighter, with a J-16D electronic-warfare aircraft also appearing in the broader sequence. It was the first widely reported official air-to-air footage of the aircraft. The War Zone’s analysis of the footage describes the demonstration and the aircraft seen with it.

But a formation flight is not a combat test. The footage does not reveal whether the J-20 controlled the drone, how secure or capable their datalink is, whether they shared targeting information, or whether the GJ-11 carried weapons. Nor does it demonstrate autonomous target selection, swarm coordination or weapons release.

Does the GJ-11 really hit 690 mph?
There is no publicly verifiable evidence establishing 690 mph as the GJ-11’s top speed. The figure, equivalent to about 1,111 km/h, circulates in secondary reporting and specification summaries, but the available public record does not identify a Chinese technical specification or independently verified flight test confirming it. One open-source assessment notes that the number appears to have a narrow sourcing basis and could be an estimate or an aggregation error. That assessment treats the claim cautiously.
A different reference point is more widely cited: the U.S. Air Force’s China Aerospace Studies Institute describes the aircraft as having a Mach 0.8 cruising speed. CASI’s report on China’s UAV industrial base also gives an approximate 14-meter wingspan, maximum takeoff weight above 10 tons and bomb capacity above 2 tons. These are open-source assessments, not a full official specification sheet.
Mach number varies with altitude and temperature, so a speed in miles per hour does not map neatly to one Mach value in all conditions. The reported 690 mph would be roughly Mach 0.9 at sea level under standard assumptions. It should not be presented as a measured result, and maximum speed—if eventually confirmed—would not tell us how fast the aircraft cruises while carrying weapons or how far it can fly in that configuration.

What kind of aircraft is the Sharp Sword?
The GJ-11 is a jet-powered unmanned combat air vehicle, not simply a surveillance drone. Its tailless flying-wing shape is designed to reduce its radar signature, and public imagery and reporting point to internal weapons carriage. The aircraft is associated with Hongdu Aviation Industry Group, the Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute and China’s broader state aviation-industrial system. It became widely visible during China’s October 2019 National Day military parade, after earlier flight testing; that appearance showed its configuration but did not establish its service status or disclose authoritative performance figures.
Its likely roles include penetrating reconnaissance, precision strike and support for operations against defended targets. It could also serve as a forward sensor, decoy or platform for electronic-support tasks. Those are plausible missions for the design, not a publicly confirmed list of current PLA taskings. A low-observable shape and internal weapons bay can make detection harder in some conditions, but “stealth” does not mean invisible: observability depends on factors such as viewing angle, sensors and operating environment.
Public estimates put the wingspan at about 14 meters and suggest a payload of more than 2 tons, but figures should be treated as estimates rather than guaranteed capacity in every configuration. Internal carriage helps preserve a low-observable profile but constrains space and flexibility; carrying stores externally can increase options while making the aircraft easier to detect.

Why the J-20, GJ-11 and J-16D combination matters
The aircraft shown together suggest a possible division of labor in a future air-combat formation:
- J-20: a crewed stealth fighter that could contribute sensors, decision-making and coordination.
- GJ-11: an unmanned platform that could extend sensing or strike options and take on riskier tasks.
- J-16D: an electronic-warfare aircraft that could support electromagnetic sensing or attack.
The strategic idea is to combine sensing, electronic warfare and strike rather than depend on one aircraft doing everything. In principle, an unmanned aircraft could scout ahead, carry weapons or act as a decoy while crewed aircraft remain farther from danger. The presence of these aircraft in a public demonstration shows that China is presenting this combination as part of its future air-combat model. It does not prove that they have conducted a live combat mission together.
A “loyal wingman” is an unmanned aircraft intended to cooperate with crewed aircraft under mission instructions, sharing or extending capabilities while accepting more risk. The term does not mean the drone can automatically make every tactical decision. Effective teaming depends on reliable communications, sensors, software, rules governing human authorization and the ability to cope when signals are jammed or lost. The GJ-11 video does not show how China has addressed those problems.

Is the GJ-11 operational?
The evidence points to substantial progress, but it is more accurate to say the GJ-11 may be approaching or entering operational use than to call it definitively combat-ready. Satellite imagery from August and September 2025 was interpreted as showing multiple aircraft at Shigatse Peace Airport. The War Zone’s coverage of the imagery described the activity as consistent with advanced testing or a possible operational transition, not conclusive proof of full deployment.
Together with the November flight footage and the aircraft’s prominent appearance at China’s September 3, 2025 Victory Day parade, the imagery is evidence of a program beyond a static display. But aircraft at a base may be testing, training, evaluating or undergoing maintenance. Publicly available evidence has not established a unit assignment, sustained operational sorties, weapons employment or combat readiness. Details about production, maintenance and mission-control infrastructure also remain unknown.
Could there be a carrier version?
A GJ-11-related aircraft displayed at the September 2025 parade was interpreted by analysts as having features compatible with shipboard use, including apparent folding-wing elements. A possible naval derivative is often called the GJ-21 in open reporting, but the designation and configuration should be treated as reported rather than fully confirmed. A 2026 Italian Air Force magazine article discusses the possible carrier-capable derivative and gives estimated dimensions and performance, while noting a picture that remains incomplete. Its GJ-11/GJ-21 discussion is an open-source account, not an official specification.

A carrier-based stealth drone could provide reconnaissance or strike options without putting another pilot in the aircraft. It might scout ahead of crewed aircraft or complicate an adversary’s air-defense planning. But a folding wing alone is not proof of operational carrier capability. Shipboard service requires a workable launch and recovery system, reliable deck handling, corrosion protection and safe operation in a demanding environment. Public evidence has not established how any GJ-11 naval variant would launch or recover, or whether it has done so at sea.
What the development could—and could not—change
If China fields the GJ-11 in useful numbers with dependable sensors, weapons and resilient communications, it could add forward sensing and strike capacity to air operations, including in the Western Pacific. A drone could take on some missions that would otherwise expose a crewed aircraft, and a carrier variant could extend those options at sea. These are potential effects, not demonstrated battlefield outcomes.
Performance is only one part of the equation. More important measures include combat radius with weapons, sensor quality, datalink resilience, electronic-warfare capability, autonomy when communications are disrupted, production scale and the ability to generate sorties reliably. A fast aircraft is not automatically a more effective one. A slower platform with better endurance, sensing and survivability may be more useful for a particular mission.
Comparisons with U.S. Collaborative Combat Aircraft programs, Russia’s S-70 Okhotnik or Turkey’s Kızılelma are therefore not settled by a top-speed figure. These programs differ in size, intended roles, payloads, control concepts and maturity. Without consistent public data on sensors, autonomy, weapons, costs and operational performance, declaring a winner would be premature.
What remains unknown
China has not publicly disclosed a complete, independently verifiable specification for the GJ-11. Important unknowns include its engine, confirmed maximum speed, combat radius with weapons, radar signature, sensor suite, datalink, weapon inventory, production total, unit assignment and degree of autonomy. Public reports also use varying English translations for names associated with the aircraft, including “Xuanlong,” “Mysterious Dragon” and “Dark Dragon”; these may reflect translation differences rather than distinct aircraft.
The evidence supports a clear but limited conclusion: the GJ-11 is a real, flying low-observable combat-drone program, and footage with the J-20 and J-16D signals progress in manned-unmanned formation cooperation. It does not verify 690 mph, establish a mature combat capability, or show that the drone can operate autonomously in a contested battle.
