The current way to use ChatGPT inside VS Code is the official OpenAI Codex VS Code extension. Install it from the Visual Studio Marketplace, open the Codex panel, sign in with a supported ChatGPT account, and start with a small request against an open file or selected code. Codex can explain code, propose edits, preview a diff, and hand larger jobs to Codex Cloud. You remain responsible for reviewing and testing every change.
What you are installing
Look for OpenAI Codex, not an unofficial extension named “ChatGPT coding.” The Marketplace listing describes Codex as a panel in VS Code for chatting, editing, and previewing changes. The extension can also delegate larger tasks to Codex Cloud.
Codex is an AI agent for writing, reviewing, and shipping code. In the editor, it works against the project you have opened and can use the file and code selection currently visible to you. That context is what makes a short, specific prompt useful.
Requirements
- A current VS Code installation or a compatible VS Code fork.
- A supported Codex sign-in route. ChatGPT access includes Codex across plans, but usage limits vary by plan.
- A project folder that you trust and can run locally.
OpenAI describes support for VS Code, Cursor, and Windsurf among the compatible editor targets. Availability, authentication choices, and usage limits can change, so use the sign-in and settings screens shown by your installed client.

Install Codex in VS Code
- Open VS Code and choose Extensions from the Activity Bar, or press
Ctrl+Shift+Xon Windows/Linux orCmd+Shift+Xon macOS. - Search for OpenAI Codex. Verify that the publisher is OpenAI and that the listing identifies it as the Codex extension.
- Select Install. When installation completes, the Codex icon or panel entry appears in the VS Code interface.
- Open the Codex panel and choose the sign-in option shown by the client. For the normal route, authenticate with your ChatGPT account in the browser window that opens, then return to VS Code.
- Open a project folder with File → Open Folder. Trust it only if you know the files and scripts are safe to run.
You do not normally need to create an API key for ChatGPT sign-in. If your client offers an API-key route, follow its current instructions; OpenAI’s repository notes that API-key use requires additional setup.
Your first useful task
Start with a request that is small, reversible, and easy to verify. Good first prompts include:
- “Explain this function and list its edge cases.”
- “Add a unit test for the selected method. Do not change production code.”
- “Suggest the smallest fix for this error and explain why it occurs.”
- Open the relevant file in the editor.
- Select the function, class, or error-producing section if the request concerns a particular region.
- State the outcome, constraints, and validation command. For example: “Add a test for the selected parser using the existing test style. Do not add dependencies. Run the parser tests afterward.”
- Let Codex inspect the request and propose a change.
- Read the explanation and inspect the complete diff before accepting anything.
- Run the project’s formatter, linter, unit tests, or build command yourself. A plausible-looking patch is not proof that the behavior is correct.
Why opening and selecting code matters
The IDE extension can use opened-file and selected-code context. That means you can identify the exact implementation without pasting an entire repository into the prompt. Selection also limits the scope of an explanation or proposed edit. For cross-file work, name the files and interfaces that must remain compatible, then ask Codex to show the planned change before it edits.
Can Codex edit your code?
Yes. The extension is designed to propose local edits and let you preview them. Treat the preview as a review checkpoint, not an automatic approval. Check for unintended formatting changes, altered public APIs, generated files, secrets, and edits outside the requested scope.

- Confirm every changed file belongs to the task.
- Read additions and deletions in context, not only the summary.
- Check error handling, input validation, permissions, and data exposure.
- Run targeted tests first, then the broader project checks when practical.
- Use version control so you can revert or compare the patch.
If Codex makes a change you do not want, reject it in the preview or revert it with your normal Git workflow. Give a follow-up prompt that names the exact problem rather than asking for a completely new solution.

Local work versus Codex Cloud
For a small fix, local editing is usually the clearest workflow. Larger jobs can be delegated to Codex Cloud from the extension, then reopened locally for review and finishing work.

Use a local task when you need immediate access to an uncommitted change, a local service, or a debugger. Consider Cloud when the work is substantial enough to run independently and you can describe its acceptance criteria precisely. In both cases, review the resulting diff and run your own checks.
Authentication, plans, and API keys
Codex is included across ChatGPT plans, with usage limits varying by plan. The exact allowance is therefore not a single universal number. The extension’s current sign-in screen is the authority for your account.

An API key may be available through a separate route, but it requires additional setup and should be configured only through the client’s current instructions. Never paste a key into a prompt, source file, commit, or issue.
VS Code’s experimental Agent Host option
VS Code also documents an experimental Agent Host Codex route that can be enabled in Settings. This is distinct from installing the OpenAI extension. When that preference replaces the extension target, only one Codex implementation appears in a given window. If you enable Agent Host and the familiar panel disappears, check which implementation the window is configured to use and switch back if you prefer the extension surface.

Using Codex in Cursor or another fork
OpenAI describes the IDE extension as working in VS Code, Cursor, and other VS Code forks. Install the OpenAI Codex extension through that editor’s extension mechanism, then follow the same panel and sign-in flow. Forks can differ in menus, trust prompts, keyboard shortcuts, and experimental integrations, so use the labels shown by that editor.

Require verification

Ask for a plan on broad work

Troubleshooting common problems
The extension does not appear
Confirm that you installed the listing published by OpenAI, reload the VS Code window, and check that the extension is enabled for the current workspace. A fork may use a separate marketplace or have compatibility restrictions.

Sign-in loops or fails
Complete authentication in the browser window opened by the client, return to the same editor window, and check whether a corporate proxy or blocked callback is interfering. If you choose API-key authentication, follow the client’s current setup instructions rather than putting credentials in settings shared with your repository.
Codex proposes irrelevant edits
Open the target file, select the exact code, name the files it may change, and state what must not change. Start a new task when the conversation has accumulated unrelated assumptions.
A patch breaks tests
Read the failing test and the diff together. Tell Codex the exact failure, ask for the smallest correction, and rerun the same command. Do not accept a workaround that merely weakens or deletes the test unless that is the intended design change.
The expected panel is missing
Check whether VS Code’s experimental Agent Host Codex preference is replacing the extension implementation. Only one implementation is shown in a window when that replacement is active.
