Yes. ChatGPT Search works in the official ChatGPT apps for iPhone and Android, and OpenAI currently lists it for Free as well as paid plans. You can tap the tools or plus control by the message box and choose Search or Web search; for some questions, ChatGPT may search automatically. Free access has usage limits, and the exact controls can vary by app version, region, account, and workspace settings.
This is not a brand-new mobile feature: a limited Plus-only browsing mode arrived in 2023. The current, broader ChatGPT Search product rolled out across plans and platforms in late 2024 and early 2025.
What ChatGPT Search does on a phone
ChatGPT Search lets the assistant retrieve information from the web and answer with links or citations. Unlike a conventional search page, it generally presents a synthesized response first, which you can follow up on in the same conversation. Depending on the query and interface, results may include a Sources panel, publisher links, maps, or local business information. OpenAI describes the feature and its behavior in its ChatGPT Search help page and its Search announcement.
Search may happen automatically when ChatGPT decides a question would benefit from current web information, or you can request it yourself. Seeing an answer does not by itself prove that Search ran: look for citations, a Sources control, or other web-result elements, and open the links when the underlying evidence matters.

The early “Browse with Bing” mode and current ChatGPT Search are different product experiences. The historical mobile flow is documented in OpenAI’s iOS and Android app notes; current access and behavior are described in its Search documentation.
How to search the web in the ChatGPT app
- Open the official ChatGPT app on iPhone or Android and start or open a conversation.
- Tap the plus button or tools control beside the message composer. Depending on the interface, open View all tools.
- Choose Search or Web search, then enter your question.
- Read the answer and open its citations or Sources panel to inspect the supporting pages.
The labels are not identical in every interface. OpenAI also documents typing / and selecting Search, and says ChatGPT may search automatically if a prompt calls for current information. In some interfaces, you can retry an answer and choose a Search option. For Enterprise and Edu, the controls and administrator restrictions are also covered in OpenAI’s Search help for those workspaces.

To make the need for current information clear, ask something specific, such as “What are today’s major headlines?” or “What is the latest version of this app?” For an answer that needs evidence, you can say: “Search the web and cite primary sources. Tell me which claims are uncertain.”

- Current information: Ask about recent developments, changing rules, or information that may have changed since the model learned it.
- Follow-up research: Ask a second question about the answer, request a comparison, or ask it to explain a cited source.
- Local discovery: Queries about nearby businesses or restaurants may produce maps or structured local results when available.
- Voice queries: OpenAI says users can ask ChatGPT to search during a voice conversation. Availability may roll out gradually, and voice use is subject to limits.
- Restaurant actions: Some restaurant results may link to a third-party reservation flow, sometimes with details such as party size, date, or time filled in. Review and confirm the details with the provider; reservation confirmation and cancellation are handled through that provider.
These are documented capabilities, not guarantees that every query or account will show the same result. OpenAI’s Search help page describes maps, voice, local results, and reservation flows.

Is ChatGPT Search free, and do you need Plus?
You do not need Plus just to access Search under OpenAI’s current documentation. Search is listed for Free, Plus, Team, Edu, and Enterprise users, and OpenAI says logged-out Free users can also access it in available regions. Its Free Tier FAQ also lists web search as a Free capability.
Free does not mean unlimited. OpenAI says usage limits vary by plan and can change; eligibility may also depend on location, account status, or workspace controls. See the current ChatGPT FAQ and Search help for the relevant qualifications.

Plus makes more sense if you also want broader access to models and other ChatGPT tools, rather than for occasional mobile web searches alone. OpenAI’s Plus documentation lists the plan at $20 per month, billed monthly, and describes its additional access and features; check the Plus help page for current terms. Plan details can change.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Search may send queries to third-party search providers, and it may rewrite a prompt into one or more targeted search queries. For local results, the service may use location-related information. OpenAI says device location sharing is optional and off by default; it also says IP-based location may help with relevance, while the IP address itself is not shared with search providers or tied to the ChatGPT account for those purposes. To manage location access in ChatGPT, use Settings → Data controls → Location Services. You can also manage precise-location permission separately in iOS or Android device settings where supported. Location can improve nearby recommendations, but you can leave it off and specify a city or neighborhood in your prompt instead. Avoid putting sensitive personal information into search prompts.
When ChatGPT Search is useful—and when another search tool fits better

This is a workflow distinction, not a performance ranking. ChatGPT’s synthesized answer is convenient, but it can obscure which sources were considered. A conventional search page may be preferable when you want to choose among many results, apply filters, or inspect primary documents directly. For shopping, extensive filtering, and known-site navigation, direct search results may also be easier to audit.
What to do when Search is missing or the answer lacks sources
- Search did not start: Select Search manually from the tools or plus menu, or type / and choose Search. Ask explicitly for current information rather than relying on automatic detection.
- The control is not visible: Update the app, check whether the feature is available for your account and region, and consider workspace restrictions. Try ChatGPT on the web to see whether the problem is limited to the app.
- You are in a work or school workspace: An administrator may restrict Search. OpenAI documents controls for Enterprise and Edu in its workspace Search guide.
- No citations appear: Search may not have been used, or the interface may expose sources differently. Retry with Search selected and ask for source links; then open them rather than treating citations as proof of accuracy.
- You have reached a limit: Wait for access to reset or check the current plan limits. Free access is limited and is not a promise of unlimited Search.
- A local result looks wrong: Check the address, opening hours, availability, distance, and any reservation details directly with the business or service.
Web access does not eliminate errors, weak sources, or faulty summaries. For medical, legal, financial, safety, or politically consequential questions, check the cited material directly, prefer primary sources, and compare dates and claims across sources.
