Yes—ChatGPT Search can be used without an OpenAI account in supported regions, and the search feature is available on ChatGPT’s Free tier. OpenAI removed the sign-in requirement on February 5, 2025. That did not make access universal or unlimited: availability varies by region, Free-tier usage limits apply, and logged-out conversations are not saved.
ChatGPT Search is best understood as a web-connected feature that answers in conversation, often with citations—not as a conventional search-results page. It can be useful for quick explanations and follow-up research, but you should still open its sources and verify important claims.
What changed when ChatGPT Search opened to everyone?
OpenAI’s February 5, 2025 announcement removed the account requirement for ChatGPT Search in supported locations. It was an expansion of an existing feature, not the launch of a new search engine. OpenAI’s announcement and timeline show how it rolled out:
- October 31, 2024: ChatGPT Search was introduced.
- December 16, 2024: It expanded to logged-in users in supported regions.
- February 5, 2025: It became available to logged-out users in supported regions.
SearchGPT was an earlier prototype and waitlist experience; its features were incorporated into ChatGPT Search. Today, ChatGPT remains the general-purpose assistant, while Search is the feature that can consult the web to help answer a prompt.

Current status: OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search help page says the feature is available at chatgpt.com and in ChatGPT desktop and mobile apps. Logged-out access and individual features can still vary by region and rollout.
Do you need an account, and is it free?
Usually, you do not need an account to try it. In a supported location, open chatgpt.com, enter a question, and ChatGPT may search the web automatically if current information would help. You can also choose Search explicitly when that option is available.
Web search is available to Free-tier users, but free does not mean unlimited. OpenAI applies usage limits, which can change; paid plans generally provide higher limits and additional capabilities. Check the Free Tier FAQ for the current description of Free access rather than assuming a fixed allowance.

There are practical trade-offs to using ChatGPT while signed out: chats are not saved, only one conversation can be active at a time, and starting a new conversation makes the previous one inaccessible. Some users may also encounter a sign-in prompt because access is not yet available in their location or for their particular experience. How to search with ChatGPT
- Go to chatgpt.com or open the ChatGPT app.
- Enter a question. ChatGPT may search automatically when the answer needs current web information.
- To request a search directly, look for View all tools and select Search. In interfaces that support it, type
/and choose Search from the menu. - Read the answer, then open its citations or the Sources panel to inspect the pages behind it.
Labels and controls can differ across web, desktop, iOS, and Android, and may change over time. If ChatGPT answers without searching, some versions offer a response control such as Search the web or Try again. The current options are documented in the Search help page.
What does ChatGPT Search return?
Instead of presenting a page dominated by a list of links, ChatGPT Search typically produces a natural-language answer. It may include inline citations, a Sources panel with cited pages and other relevant links, and—in some searches—images or specialized results for topics such as weather, news, stocks, sports, and local information. Supported experiences may also show maps, restaurant listings, reservation options, or shopping results with product images, prices, and merchant links.
That format can save time when you want an explanation or a comparison and expect to ask follow-up questions. You can refine your request in the same conversation—for example, “Compare the two options for a student on a tight budget”—instead of starting over with disconnected keyword searches. But a synthesized answer is not an exhaustive view of everything on the web, and citations are an invitation to check sources, not a guarantee that the answer is correct.

There is no universal winner; the right choice depends on what you are trying to do.

Perplexity and other AI-search products also emphasize synthesized, source-linked answers, but their features and access vary. Use the tool that best exposes the evidence and format you need; there is no basis here for declaring one service best for every user.

Limits and mistakes to watch for
- A citation may not support the exact sentence. A page can mention a topic without backing the specific claim ChatGPT attaches to it. Open the source and check the relevant passage.
- Synthesis can overstate certainty. The model may misread a page, combine details incorrectly, omit caveats, or draw an unsupported conclusion from weak sources.
- The answer may hide useful alternatives. An answer-first interface can obscure minority views, corrections, opinion-versus-reporting distinctions, and pages that were not selected.
- Time-sensitive details can change. Prices, stock, shipping, opening hours, schedules, and local listings may be out of date. OpenAI notes that shopping data can lag merchant updates, and displayed prices may not be the lowest. Check the shopping results guidance and confirm details with the merchant or service before acting.
- Search limits still apply. Free and paid usage is subject to limits, which can change.
- Features differ by location. Logged-out access, maps, voice search, reservations, and other experiences may not be available everywhere.
- Logged-out context can disappear. Because a signed-out chat is not saved, capture anything you need before starting another conversation.
For medical, legal, financial, safety, or other high-stakes questions, do not rely on a generated answer alone. Verify the underlying primary source and consult an appropriately qualified professional where needed.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Search may rewrite a prompt into one or more targeted queries, search through third-party providers and content supplied directly by partners, and issue further searches after reviewing results. Its help documentation says it may send those rewritten queries and general location information derived from an IP address to search providers to improve results. It says it does not send the IP address itself or ChatGPT account information to those providers for the search request. Precise device-location sharing is optional and can be controlled in settings. These are OpenAI’s stated practices, not a blanket privacy guarantee; consult the Search privacy details for the current explanation.

As with any online service, avoid putting passwords, financial account numbers, confidential business material, or private medical details into a prompt. Review ChatGPT’s Data Controls and Memory settings if you want to manage how your account handles conversations, and disable precise location sharing if you do not want location-based personalization. When you open a source link, you are visiting an external site with its own privacy practices.
ChatGPT Search is not Deep Research
Deep Research is a separate, more intensive feature designed to conduct multi-step research and synthesize many sources over a longer process, with its own plan-based limits. ChatGPT Search is intended for quicker web lookups and current answers. A regular answer with citations should not be mistaken for an exhaustive research report.
Should you use ChatGPT Search instead of a regular search engine?
Try ChatGPT Search when you want a conversational explanation, a multi-part comparison, or a starting synthesis that you can refine with follow-up questions. Prefer a conventional search engine when you need to inspect a broad set of independent pages, find a specific website, use exact-match operators, scan headlines quickly, or get map and navigation results. For consequential decisions, use both: ask for a synthesis, then independently inspect the original sources.
