If ChatGPT is not working on your iPhone, first check OpenAI’s status page, then compare the app on Wi-Fi and cellular data. Those checks help separate a service incident or network problem from an app crash or sign-in issue. OpenAI’s status page reported full operation when checked on August 18, 2026, but says individual availability can vary.
Try the least disruptive fixes first: switch networks, force-close and reopen ChatGPT, restart the iPhone, and update the app. Use the sign-in and crash-specific steps below if those do not help.

Check what is failing
The right fix depends on whether ChatGPT will not open, cannot connect, or will not authenticate. Use this table to choose where to start.

These are diagnostic categories, not proof of a particular cause. If a failure occurs only with one conversation or feature, record that detail rather than treating it as a general outage.

Check whether ChatGPT is down
Visit status.openai.com before changing iPhone settings. When ChatGPT is marked degraded or unavailable, local troubleshooting may not resolve the problem. On August 18, 2026, the page said OpenAI was fully operational and that it was not aware of issues affecting its systems.
A green status page does not guarantee that every account, model, feature, or region is unaffected; OpenAI notes that individual availability can vary. If the status is operational and the problem happens only on your iPhone, continue with the device and network checks.
Confirm you have the official app and a compatible iPhone
Use the ChatGPT listing in Apple’s US App Store to confirm the app is published by OpenAI OpCo, LLC. Avoid similarly named third-party chatbot apps when troubleshooting the official ChatGPT service.
The US listing required iOS 17.0 or later and showed version 1.2026.209, dated August 7, 2026, when checked on August 18, 2026. App versions and compatibility details can change; check the listing on your own device for current availability. An iPhone that cannot run iOS 17 may not be able to install or update the current app.
- Open the App Store and tap your profile icon.
- Check the available updates and install any ChatGPT update.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update to check for an iOS update.
Before upgrading iOS, make sure the iPhone has enough available storage and that your data is backed up.

Try the quick fixes for connection and app problems
Compare Wi-Fi with cellular data
- If you are on Wi-Fi, turn Wi-Fi off temporarily and try ChatGPT over cellular data.
- If you are on cellular, connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network and try again.
- If ChatGPT works on one connection but not the other, focus on the failing network rather than reinstalling the app.
Restart your router only if other websites or apps are also having trouble. On a workplace, school, hotel, or otherwise managed network, an administrator may need to check whether OpenAI or Cloudflare verification traffic is filtered. OpenAI recommends trying a different network for login problems and notes that managed networks can interfere with Cloudflare challenges: OpenAI login troubleshooting.
Temporarily test without network filters
For a diagnostic test, temporarily turn off any VPN or proxy, ad blocker, privacy or script blocker, DNS-filtering service, or security app that inspects traffic. Then retry ChatGPT. OpenAI lists these tools and restrictive network configurations as possible causes of sign-in or verification problems in its login troubleshooting guidance.

This is a test, not a recommendation to leave protections disabled. If the app works only when a particular tool is off, restore your preferred protection and check that tool’s settings or contact its provider.
Force-close and reopen ChatGPT
Apple recommends closing an app when it is unresponsive or appears frozen. Follow Apple’s instructions for closing an app on iPhone:
- iPhone X or later: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause. Find ChatGPT, then swipe up on its preview.
- iPhone SE, iPhone 8, or earlier: Double-click the Home button, find ChatGPT, then swipe up on its preview.
Open ChatGPT again from the Home Screen or App Library.

Restart the iPhone
For a normally responsive iPhone, Apple’s restart steps are:

Drag the power-off slider, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6, 7, 8, or iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation): Press and hold the side button, drag the power-off slider, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button to restart.
For other models or if the iPhone itself is frozen, use Apple’s iPhone restart and force-restart instructions rather than guessing a button sequence.
Fix sign-in and verification problems
Use the sign-in method you originally chose
Sign in with the same provider or method you used when creating the account:
- Google signup: Continue with Google
- Microsoft signup: Continue with Microsoft
- Apple signup: Continue with Apple
- Email-and-password signup: use the email and password route
- Business or Enterprise account: use your organization’s SSO route when required
A different route can lead to errors such as “Wrong authentication method,” “There is already a user with this email,” or “This user already exists.” It can also make your subscription or conversation history appear to be missing because you have entered a different account. OpenAI explains these sign-in issues in its login troubleshooting guide.
If you used Apple’s Hide My Email, the account may be associated with an @privaterelay.appleid.com address rather than the personal email address you normally use.

Resolve “Cookies are disabled” during Google sign-in
OpenAI says blocked cookies can prevent Google authentication in the ChatGPT iOS login flow. If you see this specific error:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps → Safari, or search Settings for Safari if your menu is arranged differently.
- Find Block All Cookies and turn it off.
- Return to ChatGPT and try Google sign-in again.
Apple’s Settings layout varies between iOS releases. OpenAI’s cookie troubleshooting guidance addresses the Safari setting for this authentication problem. You do not need to start by deleting all Safari website data, which can sign you out of other sites.
Break a “Checking your browser…” or Cloudflare loop
- Temporarily test with VPNs, proxies, and content blockers disabled.
- Make sure cookies and JavaScript are allowed for the sign-in flow.
- Try another network, then try a private Safari tab or a different device or desktop browser.
- If you are on a managed work or school network, ask IT whether Cloudflare verification is blocked.

If ChatGPT repeatedly crashes, use the lower-impact fixes first: force-close it, restart the iPhone, and install any available app update. For a persistent crash, OpenAI recommends uninstalling and downloading the app again from the official App Store listing in its iOS app troubleshooting guidance.

Before reinstalling, make sure you know the original sign-in method and can access the account. Removing the app removes its local installation; it is not the same as deleting your ChatGPT account. Do not assume that every piece of local app state is preserved.

If one task seems to trigger the crash, note whether it happens with a conversation started on the web, a particular long conversation, voice, image generation, photo upload, a custom keyboard, or an accessibility setting. Also note whether it happens on Wi-Fi, cellular, or both. OpenAI asks for device and configuration details when investigating persistent iOS crashes.
Check feature-specific failures
Messages are stuck or conversations will not load
Check the status page, switch networks, and sign out and back in only if you can identify the correct account and sign-in route. Try Safari as a comparison. If the problem affects one conversation but new chats work, record that distinction for Support; it may point to a conversation-specific issue rather than a general connection failure.
Voice, camera, or photo upload fails
Check that ChatGPT has the relevant iPhone permission in Settings, then update the app and test on another network. A failure limited to one feature does not by itself establish an outage. Feature availability can vary, and the available evidence does not establish one universal fix for every voice or image problem.

Notifications do not arrive
Check ChatGPT’s notification permission in iPhone Settings and any Focus mode or notification summary settings that may affect delivery. This is distinct from an app connection or sign-in failure.
Use ChatGPT in Safari as a fallback and diagnostic test
- Open Safari and go to https://chatgpt.com/.
- Sign in using the same method associated with your account.
- Try the same task that failed in the app, if practical.
- Safari works, app fails: The issue is more likely app-specific, such as its version, installation, permissions, or a bug.
- Both fail: Check service status, account authentication, and the network.
- Cellular works, Wi-Fi fails: Focus on Wi-Fi filtering, router or DNS settings, or managed-network restrictions.
Safari is a useful temporary route, but it may not provide every app-specific feature or permission flow. OpenAI also recommends trying another browser, device, or network for login problems in its login guidance.
When to contact OpenAI Support
Contact OpenAI through its Help Center if the problem continues after the relevant checks, especially if you can reproduce it. Include enough detail to distinguish an account problem from an iPhone, app, or network problem:
- The exact error message and a screenshot or screen recording, if available
- Date and time of the failure, including time zone
- iPhone model, iOS version, and ChatGPT app version
- Whether you were on Wi-Fi or cellular, and whether another network worked
- Whether Safari works, and whether the problem affects one conversation or all of them
- The sign-in method you used and the troubleshooting steps already tried
- For crashes: language, custom keyboards, accessibility settings, and whether a particular feature or conversation triggers it
OpenAI’s authentication troubleshooting guidance requests error and device details for login issues. Never send a password, one-time code, private key, or other authentication secret.
