On iPhone, ChatGPT is available in two separate ways: through the standalone ChatGPT app, or as an optional extension for Apple Intelligence features such as Siri and Writing Tools. The main controls are in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. There you can enable it, choose whether to sign in, control confirmation prompts, or switch off the integration.

Two ways to use ChatGPT on iPhone
The ChatGPT app is a direct way to chat with OpenAI. Depending on your account and access, it supports conversations, voice, images, and files. The Apple Intelligence integration lets supported Apple features call ChatGPT without opening the app. You can use that integration without a ChatGPT account, or sign in to connect it to your account.
Apple’s integration can appear in Siri, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Image Playground, and Shortcuts. These are distinct entry points, and their interfaces and availability depend on the iPhone and iOS version. Installing the app does not, by itself, enable the Apple Intelligence integration. Check requirements and availability
Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone, in every language, or in every region. Feature availability can also differ within Apple Intelligence. Before troubleshooting a missing ChatGPT option, check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements and availability information, install the latest iOS version available for your device, and confirm ChatGPT is available in your country or region.
- For Apple Intelligence features, you need a supported iPhone, supported language and region, and Apple Intelligence enabled.
- For the ChatGPT extension, the relevant Apple Intelligence features must be available and the extension enabled in Settings.
- For the standalone app, use the App Store listing published by OpenAI.
Install the official ChatGPT app
- Open the App Store and search for openai chatgpt.
- Open the listing and confirm the publisher is OpenAI.
- Install the app and open it.
- If you already have a ChatGPT account, sign in using the same authentication method you used when creating it.
Checking the publisher helps distinguish the official app from lookalike listings. OpenAI’s App Store download guidance identifies the official iOS app.
Set up ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Under Extensions, tap ChatGPT.
- Tap Set Up.
- Choose Enable ChatGPT to use the integration without signing in, or choose Use ChatGPT with an Account and complete sign-in.
You can connect an account later by opening Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT and tapping Sign In. Without an account, these requests are not saved to ChatGPT history. With an account, the integration can use account-linked features and is governed by your account settings and applicable OpenAI policies. See OpenAI’s setup instructions.
Use ChatGPT with Siri
Activate Siri by voice or typing and ask your question. Siri may offer to send it to ChatGPT; approve the request when prompted, then review Siri’s response. Siri does not automatically send every request to ChatGPT: it decides when ChatGPT may help, and the normal confirmation prompt gives you a chance to approve or decline.

- With a relevant image open: “What recipes can I make with this?”
Siri can use ChatGPT with photos or documents, but it asks separately before sending a photo or file. Treat that prompt as a chance to check what you are sharing.
Choose when Siri asks for confirmation
By default, Siri asks before sending a request to ChatGPT and always asks before sending a photo or file. To skip the ordinary confirmation prompt for eligible requests, go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT and turn off Confirm ChatGPT Requests.
For a text-only request, beginning with “Ask ChatGPT…” can bypass the usual prompt. Turning off Confirm ChatGPT Requests does not remove the permission prompt for photos or files. If you want an explicit checkpoint before requests are sent, leave confirmations on. OpenAI’s Siri and ChatGPT FAQ describes the “Ask ChatGPT” wording and confirmation behavior.
Compose or revise text with Writing Tools
- In an app that supports text entry, tap the text field and select text if you want to work on only part of it.
- Open Writing Tools. Swipe up if needed to reveal more options.
- Tap Compose, then describe what you want written.
- Choose whether to include all the text or only the selection, when that choice is offered.
- Review the result. Rewrite it, accept a suggestion, revert, or tap Done.
Writing Tools can help draft an email, adjust tone, summarize text, or turn notes into a polished message. Some supported Apple Intelligence experiences can also produce images from descriptions. Before submitting, check whether the request includes selected text or surrounding content that you did not intend to share. The precise options depend on the app and iOS version; Apple’s iPhone guide documents the current workflow.

Ask about what your camera sees with Visual Intelligence
On supported iPhone models, Visual Intelligence can use ChatGPT to answer questions about something in view. Activate Visual Intelligence using the available method on your device—commonly pressing and holding Camera Control—point the camera at an object, place, or text, tap Ask, then type or dictate a follow-up question. Review the answer and close the results when finished.
It can be useful for asking about an object, landmark, or visible text. Camera Control and Visual Intelligence are not universal iPhone features; hardware, language, region, and iOS version affect availability. A camera request also means sending visual information for analysis, so check the prompt and image content before approving it.
Images and Shortcuts
Image Playground and image requests
Apple’s ChatGPT integration can assist with image creation in supported Apple Intelligence experiences, provide additional styles in Image Playground, and help interpret images through Siri or Visual Intelligence. Image Playground is not the same interface as image generation in the standalone ChatGPT app. Available styles, limits, and account or plan requirements can vary with iOS release and availability.

Shortcuts
Apple documents ChatGPT as a model option for more complex Shortcuts requests. In the Shortcuts app, create or edit a shortcut, add an Apple Intelligence or model-based action where available, choose ChatGPT if it is offered, and pass text, files, or other shortcut output into the request. You can then review the result and add follow-up actions. Action names and placement can change between iOS versions, so use the options shown on your device rather than relying on a fixed label.

Account or no account?

Signing in changes which privacy terms and settings apply; it is not required just to enable Apple’s integration. Business-account interactions remain subject to the relevant business commitments. For details, read OpenAI’s explanation of data handling through Apple integrations.
What happens to data you send?
Using Apple’s integration without an account
OpenAI says Apple sends the request and any attachments needed to answer it. Limited associated information may also be sent, such as time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature used. OpenAI says your IP address is obscured from ChatGPT, though general location may be provided for fraud prevention and legal compliance; it does not receive information tied to your Apple Account. OpenAI says it does not store the request or response except where legally required, and does not use them to train or improve its models.
Using the integration while signed in
Your ChatGPT account settings apply, along with OpenAI’s applicable data policies. The account-free handling described above should not be assumed for a signed-in interaction. If you use a business account, the applicable enterprise commitments govern.

- Avoid sending confidential documents unless you understand the policy that applies to your account.
- Inspect selected text before using Writing Tools, and check the contents of photos or files before approving their transfer.
- Leave confirmation prompts on if you want a checkpoint before eligible requests are sent.
- For a child or managed device, consider Screen Time restrictions for Apple Intelligence and third-party AI provider extensions. Apple documents controls at its Screen Time guide; menu labels may differ by iOS version.
Turn off ChatGPT or stop its setup suggestions
- Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT.
- Turn off Use ChatGPT to disable the Apple Intelligence integration.
- To stop Siri from suggesting ChatGPT setup, turn off Setup Prompts as well.
This disables the Apple Intelligence extension; it does not uninstall the standalone ChatGPT app. To remove the app, delete it separately from the iPhone. You can also leave ChatGPT disabled while continuing to use other Apple Intelligence features available on your device.

Troubleshoot common problems

Do you need a paid ChatGPT plan?
The Apple Intelligence integration does not require a paid ChatGPT plan. For occasional questions, try account-free use or ChatGPT Free before subscribing. A paid plan is more relevant if you regularly use the standalone app and need greater account-level access to models or tools; it does not remove Apple’s device, language, region, or feature restrictions.
