ChatGPT Health is a dedicated space for discussing health and wellness information, including records and app data you choose to connect. It does not necessarily ingest your entire medical history: available records depend on supported providers, your permissions, and what those providers make available. OpenAI says the feature is intended to help people understand information and prepare for care—not to diagnose or treat them.
What ChatGPT Health is—and when it launched
ChatGPT Health is a separate area within ChatGPT for health and wellness conversations. With your permission, it can use information from connected medical-record sources and health or fitness services to help explain, organize, and discuss that information. OpenAI announced the feature on January 7, 2026, with limited access; it announced a broader U.S. rollout on July 23, 2026. Those are different milestones, not a single date when the feature became available to everyone. OpenAI’s initial announcement and rollout announcement describe the stages.
As of August 16, 2026, OpenAI’s help documentation described a gradual rollout to logged-in U.S. users aged 18 or older on the web and iOS, for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts. Eligibility does not guarantee that Health will already appear in an account. Medical-record connections are U.S.-only, and Apple Health connection requires an iPhone. Android and non-U.S. consumer availability were not listed in that documentation. Check the current eligibility and setup guidance for changes.

Does ChatGPT Health ingest your entire medical record?
No—not as a general guarantee. The headline claim that it ingests your “entire medical records” overstates what the documented connections establish. You can authorize access to supported U.S. provider portals and services such as One Medical or Function Health, as well as Apple Health and supported wellness apps. Which sources are available varies, and you choose whether to connect them. A provider connection may expose records such as test results, prescriptions, visit summaries, or clinical history, but it does not prove that every record from every provider—or every historical detail—is present.

Records can be delayed, incomplete, duplicated, or difficult to interpret, and some information may not be available electronically at all. Apple Health can supply permitted categories of health and activity data, such as activity or sleep; it is not a complete clinical chart. Treat the information in Health as selected, authorized data, not as a definitive physician-facing record. OpenAI describes connected-data handling in its Health privacy policy and its Health help article.
What it can help you do
OpenAI presents Health as a tool for understanding information and preparing for conversations with healthcare professionals. If the relevant information is connected and current, useful requests might include:

- “Summarize changes in my records since my last appointment.”
- “Help me understand these care instructions.”
- “Show patterns in my permitted activity or sleep data.”
- “Help me organize appointment notes or think through meal and exercise ideas.”
These are explanation, organization, and preparation tasks—not clinical decisions. A useful answer should identify which records it relied on and what may be missing. If it does not, ask; then check the underlying source and confirm consequential interpretations with a qualified professional.
What “not for diagnosis or treatment” means
OpenAI says ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnosis or treatment. That is a statement about the product’s intended role, not a guarantee that every answer will avoid diagnostic speculation or treatment-like suggestions. A language model can misread a result, overlook context, sound certain when it is wrong, or draw a conclusion from incomplete data.

Important risks include false reassurance, missing an emergency, misinterpreting a result against the wrong reference range, mistaking correlation for cause, and overlooking medication interactions or an outdated medication list. Test interpretation can depend on the laboratory, timing, health conditions, age, pregnancy status, and medicines. A number outside a reference range is not, by itself, a diagnosis.
Do not start, stop, combine, or change a medication or supplement based only on a ChatGPT response. Verify significant or alarming results with your clinician, and use a pharmacist or prescriber for medication questions. For urgent symptoms or a possible emergency, seek immediate professional help or contact emergency services rather than waiting for a chat response. OpenAI’s Health guidance likewise directs users to verify important information and discuss medical decisions with a healthcare provider.

Privacy controls—and what they do not promise
OpenAI says Health conversations, memories, files, connected medical records, and Apple Health information are not used to train its foundation models or target ads. It also describes additional encryption and isolation protections. These are OpenAI’s stated data-use and security commitments, not a guarantee that information is never processed or stored, or that risk is zero. Review the Health privacy policy for the applicable terms.

Health has separate chats, files, and memories from ordinary ChatGPT conversations. OpenAI says Health information does not automatically flow back into ordinary chats, though Health may use limited context from non-Health conversations when helpful. The controls do not mean the data can never be used elsewhere: OpenAI’s current help guidance says you can deliberately authorize connected Apple Health or medical-record information to inform another ChatGPT conversation. Apps are off by default unless you enable them, and a third-party app may receive information when you authorize an action. Review each connection and permission rather than assuming the Health boundary applies to every workflow.

You can disconnect a source in Health settings. OpenAI says synced data from that source is deleted from its systems within 30 days after disconnection. Information already included in conversation history may remain until you separately delete those conversations. Disconnecting an account is therefore not the same as clearing every copy of information that appeared in chats or other enabled workflows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the consumer version HIPAA-compliant?
Do not assume that a personal ChatGPT Health account is a HIPAA-covered clinical service. OpenAI offers a separate product, ChatGPT for Healthcare, for hospitals, health systems, and other organizations. OpenAI describes organization-focused controls such as role-based access, audit logs, data-residency options, and healthcare-specific capabilities for that offering; deployment is arranged through enterprise agreements. Its existence does not establish that the consumer product, or every connection between a consumer and a provider, has the same contractual protections. How to connect health information
These are the documented web and iOS steps as of August 16, 2026. Labels and availability may vary during the rollout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open ChatGPT on the web or in the supported iOS app and sign in.
- Open Health in the sidebar. In some interfaces, it may be under More.
- Select Get started or Connect Health, if shown.
- Choose a source, such as Apple Health, Medical Records, One Medical, or Function Health.
- Sign in to that provider or service, review the requested access, and grant only the permissions you want to allow.
- Wait for synchronization. A large history may take minutes or longer; confirm the dates and records that appear before relying on a summary.
- Review any prompts to add or confirm conditions, medications, or family history, then ask questions within Health.
You can add or remove connections in Health settings. The official setup article is the best place to check if the path or labels have changed.
When connecting data makes sense—and when it does not
It may be useful if you want to
- Prepare questions before an appointment or translate unfamiliar instructions into plain language.
- Organize selected information that is otherwise spread across supported portals and apps.
- Explore permitted activity, sleep, or other wellness data while understanding that the source may not be clinically complete.
- Use an AI explanation as a starting point and verify important conclusions with a healthcare professional.
Pause before connecting if you
- Are uncomfortable putting sensitive health information into a consumer AI service, even with the stated protections.
- Need a diagnosis, treatment decision, medication review, emergency assessment, or legally accountable clinical record.
- Expect the connection to produce a complete record when your provider is unsupported or your records are fragmented.
- May treat fluent, confident answers as authoritative without checking sources or context.
- Are handling another person’s records without an appropriate account, permission, and privacy arrangement.
How it differs from patient portals and health apps
These services can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable.
Quick Recap
| Service | Best suited to | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Patient portal | Official results, clinician messages, medication lists, appointments, and documentation from that provider. | Portals can be fragmented across providers and may still require a clinician to interpret the information. |
| Apple Health | Centralizing permitted activity, sleep, heart-rate, movement, and other device or app data on iPhone. | Not a complete clinical record; shared categories depend on permissions. See Apple Health. |
| One Medical or Function Health | Making information from an existing service available through a supported connection. | Availability and records depend on the service and user account; neither connection guarantees a complete chart. See One Medical and Function Health. |
| Fitness, nutrition, and wearable apps | Tracking the lifestyle metrics each app collects, sometimes through Apple Health or an approved connector. | Metrics transferred vary; these apps are not substitutes for clinical records or professional care. |
| Clinician or pharmacist | Diagnosis, treatment decisions, medication safety, and care for urgent or worsening symptoms. | ChatGPT can help you prepare for the conversation, but it is not the professional providing care. |
A practical checklist for safer use
- Check the source and date of each record or result the answer relies on.
- Ask what information is missing and whether tests came from different labs or were taken under different conditions.
- Use explanations to prepare questions, not to make medication or treatment changes.
- Confirm significant results and decisions with a qualified healthcare professional.
- Review connected-app permissions and enable only the services and actions you want.
- If you disconnect a source, separately delete chats containing information you no longer want in conversation history.
