The Certified Backstage Associate (CBA) is a CNCF and Linux Foundation Education credential for people who use or build Backstage-based internal developer portals. It was announced on November 15, 2024—not a new August 2026 launch—and remains listed as available. The current published offer is a 90-minute, remotely proctored multiple-choice exam costing $250, with one free retake. The credential tests four areas: development workflow, infrastructure, the Software Catalog, and Backstage customization.
What is Backstage?
Backstage is an open-source framework originally created at Spotify and now hosted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation as an Incubation-level project. It helps organizations build an internal developer portal: one interface for software ownership, documentation, templates, APIs, services and engineering tools.
Backstage is not a fixed all-in-one SaaS product. Its architecture is extensible, with a Software Catalog, Software Templates (Scaffolder), TechDocs, authentication and authorization, frontend and backend systems, and plugins for source control, CI/CD, Kubernetes, cloud and observability services. Teams choose the integrations, metadata standards and operating model that fit their environment.

Open-source Backstage should also be distinguished from Spotify’s commercial Backstage-related products and paid plugins. They are related, but a self-managed Backstage installation is not the same product as a managed Spotify offering.

What is the Certified Backstage Associate?
The CBA is issued by CNCF and Linux Foundation Education. It is intended for IT engineers, developers, platform engineers, DevOps and SRE practitioners, and others who work with Backstage tools or standardized internal developer platforms. Successful candidates receive a certificate and digital badge that can be shared on services such as LinkedIn, LFX and GitHub.
The Linux Foundation labels the certification level Beginner. That makes it an associate-level signal of familiarity with the published Backstage domains—not proof of senior platform-engineering judgment or complete production expertise.

How to prepare
1. Learn the platform model
Be able to explain how the Catalog, templates, TechDocs, plugins, configuration and authentication fit together. Learn the difference between an internal developer portal framework and a managed service.

Use the current Backstage and Spotify learning documentation to create a local app. A commonly documented starting example is:

3. Practice dependency and plugin workflows

4. Work with the Software Catalog
Practice entity metadata and the component, API, system, resource and group kinds. Register YAML locations, understand ownership and annotations, follow entity relationships, and troubleshoot failed ingestion. The blueprint specifically includes both manual registration and automated ingestion.
5. Customize the frontend and backend
Build or install a plugin, identify what belongs in the frontend versus backend, change React code in the app, use Material UI components, and place appropriate settings in app-config.yaml. Know when feature discovery is enough and when explicit registration is required.
6. Build and review a deployment
Practice creating a Docker image and understand one common production pattern documented by Backstage: build the image, push it to a registry, reference it from a Kubernetes Deployment and apply that Deployment to a cluster. This is an example, not a universal deployment requirement; organizations can use other approaches consistent with their software operations.
Who should take CBA?
Strong candidates include engineers maintaining a Backstage deployment, platform teams building an internal portal, developers integrating plugins, DevOps or SRE staff supporting its infrastructure, engineers responsible for catalog ingestion and ownership metadata, technical leads standardizing developer workflows, implementation consultants and early-career engineers seeking a structured introduction.
It may be a weak fit for someone who has never used Backstage and expects the exam to teach it from zero; a developer whose work has no internal-platform or developer-experience component; or a senior engineer seeking a hands-on administration or architecture assessment. The published blueprint is not a comprehensive test of production security, scalability, identity architecture, disaster recovery, plugin lifecycle governance or catalog quality at organizational scale.
Is the certification worth it?
CBA can be worthwhile when you need a focused, vendor-neutral Backstage credential, a structured study target or a way to signal familiarity to employers whose roles explicitly use Backstage. The four-domain blueprint gives teams a practical learning checklist, and the beginner positioning makes it more approachable than a senior-level assessment.
The trade-off is that a multiple-choice exam cannot demonstrate that you can operate a reliable portal, govern plugins, maintain catalog quality or lead a platform rollout. A working portfolio—such as a catalog with ownership metadata, a template, a plugin, a deployment and documented troubleshooting—may be stronger evidence for some employers. Recognition will vary by employer, geography and role, and the two-year validity means the credential is not lifetime proof.
