Some celebrities have said they do without a cellphone; others avoid smartphones but keep a basic phone, or have no personal number while occasionally using a device supplied by their team. Those are different choices, so “refuse to use cellphones” overstates what the evidence shows for several names. Here are the best-documented examples, with the distinction—and the date of older claims—made clear.
In brief: Christopher Walken is the clearest documented example of a celebrity who says he has no cellphone. Christopher Nolan has recently been described as phone-free, though the available account relies partly on a collaborator. Andrew Lloyd Webber said in 2018 that he did not have a mobile phone; that statement is not proof his habits remain unchanged. Ed Sheeran has said he has no personal phone number, while Aziz Ansari uses a flip phone rather than a smartphone.
That is a much shorter, better-supported list than 15. The available evidence does not substantiate 15 celebrities who personally avoid cellphones, and it would be misleading to fill the quota with old anecdotes, weakly sourced claims, or people who merely prohibit phones at their events. The people below meet a more useful standard: a direct statement or a clearly attributed report from a reputable publication.

People who say they have no cellphone
Christopher Walken
Walken is the strongest and most recently reaffirmed example. In a 2016 Guardian interview, he said he had no cellphone or computer and could be reached through his home landline. Vanity Fair reported in 2022 that he still did not carry a cellphone or use a computer in the conventional way. In a 2025 Wall Street Journal interview, he again said he did not have a cellphone or use email or Twitter; he watched Severance on DVDs sent to him.

His arrangement is not simply “no technology”: he can use a landline, receive physical media, and rely on other people or household arrangements to bridge gaps. It is a durable rejection of personal mobile connectivity, not proof that he has no contact with modern technology at all.
Christopher Nolan
A July 2026 report says Nolan still does not have a phone. It describes how collaborators may get an unexpected call on a landline-style line when he wants to talk. The same report says Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that he did not communicate by text or email.
This is less direct evidence than Walken’s recent first-person comments: the current account is reported through a collaborator, Matt Damon, rather than a recent first-person interview in the cited coverage. It supports saying Nolan has been reported to work without a phone, not making a stronger claim about every aspect of his private life.

People who avoid a personal cellphone or smartphone, but are not entirely phone-free
Ed Sheeran
Sheeran said he gave up his phone in 2015 and shifted communication to email on an iPad. He has since said he has no phone number and can be contacted by email. But “never uses a phone” is not accurate: reporting on his 2024 comments notes that his team sometimes gives him a phone at events for filming or social-media work. The meaningful distinction is that Sheeran has said he lacks a personal phone number, not that he never touches a mobile device. Email and a team-provided phone meet some communication needs without requiring him to maintain a conventional personal cellphone routine.
Andrew Lloyd Webber
In a 2018 Town & Country interview, Lloyd Webber said he did not have a mobile phone because it meant he did not have to respond to people immediately. The reason is straightforward: control over availability and fewer interruptions.

The statement is from 2018. Without a newer confirmation, it should be read as what he said at that time, not as a verified description of his phone habits in 2026.

Ansari belongs in a smartphone-avoidance category, not a phone-free one. A 2026 BuzzFeed report, referring to a 2025 People interview, says he uses a flip phone and blocks many websites on his computer. A flip phone is still a cellphone; his choice is to avoid a smartphone and its always-on apps, not to give up mobile calling altogether.

- No cellphone: A person says they do not own or use a mobile phone. Walken is the clearest example here.
- No smartphone: A person uses a basic mobile phone, such as Ansari’s reported flip phone.
- No personal number: A person may route communication through email, staff, or another device, as Sheeran has described.
- Phone-free at work or events: A no-phone concert or set policy does not establish the performer’s personal habits. For example, Dave Chappelle’s phone-free shows have used locked-phone policies for audiences; that is not evidence that Chappelle himself refuses to use a cellphone.
Age and source matter, too. A direct statement from 2025 is stronger evidence of a current habit than a remark from 2018. A collaborator’s account can be useful, but it should be identified as indirect. And a celebrity who can rely on assistants, production offices, or a team-issued device is not necessarily living with the same communication constraints as someone without that support.
What an ordinary phone user can borrow from these choices
Going completely phone-free may be impractical for work, caregiving, travel, or safety. The more transferable idea is to reduce the phone’s role rather than copy a celebrity’s entire setup:

- Set specific times to check messages, rather than answering every alert as it arrives.
- Try a basic phone if you want calls and texts without smartphone apps.
- Keep a reliable emergency contact route and tell the people who need to reach you how to use it.
- Test the change for a limited period, then adjust around real obligations such as family care or work.
The practical lesson is not that everyone should abandon mobile phones. It is that having a phone, being reachable at all times, and needing every app on one device are separate decisions.
