Cassidian’s SPEXER-500 was a real, compact security-surveillance radar launched at Milipol Paris in November 2013. Designed for critical sites and mobile security teams, it used electronic scanning to watch a 120-degree sector for ground movement and selected low-flying aircraft. Its published 0.1–9 km instrumented range was not a promise that every target could be detected at nine kilometres, and the available evidence does not establish that the exact SPEXER-500 model is still sold or supported.
What was the SPEXER-500?
The SPEXER-500 was a ground-based radar in Cassidian’s SPEXER family of sensors for perimeter, border, infrastructure and coastal surveillance. Cassidian—then EADS’s defense division—announced it at Milipol Paris in November 2013 for protecting sites such as power plants, oil facilities, airports, industrial installations and military camps. Cassidian’s launch-period description presented it as a compact radar suitable for fixed or mobile use, including tripod and vehicle deployment.
It was a security sensor, not a conventional long-range air-defense radar and not a complete perimeter-security system. Its intended job was to detect and track movement early enough to alert operators and cue other equipment.

How its scanning worked
Product literature describes the SPEXER-500 as an X-band frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar using digital beam forming. In plain terms, digital beam forming lets the radar shape and steer its beam electronically across a sector, rather than depending on mechanical rotation to look in every direction. Cassidian promoted the approach for rapid sector updates and flexible surveillance modes, including prioritizing selected areas or blanking sectors. Those are launch-period manufacturer claims, not independently validated performance findings. Microwave Journal’s 2013 report also reproduced the headline specifications.

Radar can register and track returns from moving objects; Doppler processing helps distinguish movement and, according to Cassidian, supported detection of small or slow targets such as pedestrians. But a radar track does not by itself establish what an object is. A person, animal, vehicle or drone may require confirmation from a daylight or thermal camera, another sensor, or an operator.

A separate SPEXER 500/1000 product sheet gives illustrative target-class detection ranges for the 500: about 5 km for a pedestrian, 7 km for a light vehicle, 9 km for a truck, 2.5 km for a UAV, 7.5 km for a light aircraft and 9 km for a low-level helicopter. These are published product-data estimates, not universal operating guarantees. The sheet does not provide enough test conditions to treat them as independently measured results. The product-data sheet should therefore be read as an indication of how target size and type affect the claimed ranges, not as a site-specific performance prediction.

“Instrumented range” is especially easy to overread. A 9 km upper figure does not mean a pedestrian or small drone will reliably appear at 9 km. Effective detection depends on the target’s radar cross-section, speed and angle, antenna height, line of sight, terrain, vegetation, clutter, weather, processing mode and alarm threshold. The notably shorter illustrative UAV figure than the truck or helicopter figures underlines why “detects UAVs” is not the same as a promise to detect every drone at long range.

A sector update below 1.5 seconds was intended to shorten the gap between surveillance looks. That can matter when a person crosses a perimeter, a vehicle approaches a restricted area, or a contact appears briefly between obstructions. It can also help cue a camera promptly. But update rate is only one part of response time: detection, track formation, classification, alarm logic, operator review, camera handoff, dispatch and physical intervention all add delay.

Where it could fit
The stated use cases ranged from fixed protection of critical infrastructure to temporary or mobile security at military sites and other sensitive locations. A tripod or vehicle deployment can make a radar useful where a permanent installation is impractical, but it still needs appropriate siting, power, communications and an operator workflow.
In a layered arrangement, the radar provides wide-area detection and tracking; daylight or thermal cameras help verify a contact; command-and-control software displays tracks and zones; and communications connect the system to trained responders. Access-control or intrusion sensors may add information at specific gates or boundaries. Radar is one sensor in that chain, not a substitute for the whole chain.

Limits and operational caveats
- Sector coverage: The published 120-degree azimuth sector leaves other directions uncovered unless additional sensors or repositioning provide them.
- Detection is not identification: Radar can cue a camera, but a track alone may not tell an operator whether a contact is a person, animal, vehicle or drone.
- Clutter and masking: Terrain, vegetation, structures and moving machinery can obscure targets or generate nuisance tracks. Site-specific assessment and alarm tuning matter.
- Target motion: A moving-target radar may have more difficulty with a stationary person or movement with little radial component, depending on processing and geometry.
- Small targets: The product literature lists UAV detection, but provides no independent protocol or drone conditions to support a universal range claim.
- Weather claims: Broad descriptions such as all-weather operation should not be taken to mean identical performance in every condition.
- System integration: A useful deployment depends on reliable power and communications, compatible software, camera handoff, trained operators and a response plan.
These qualifications are not unique to this model; they are reasons to evaluate the intended site and target classes rather than choose a security radar from its maximum range alone.

Cassidian’s defense activities became part of Airbus Defence and Space. Airbus corporate documents later continued to list the SPEXER security-radar family, but that continuity does not prove that the 2013 SPEXER-500 itself remains orderable. The later security-radar business is associated with HENSOLDT, whose materials discuss later SPEXER variants, including SPEXER 600 and SPEXER 360. HENSOLDT’s 2021 report identifies SPEXER 600 as a ground-based surveillance radar introduced in the UK market that year; its security overview discusses SPEXER 360 in a broader security-sensor context. These are later family products, not evidence that their specifications apply to the SPEXER-500.

As of the information available here, public sources do not establish current sales status, price, support period, software baseline, export eligibility, maintenance terms or independent test results for the exact SPEXER-500 model. A buyer considering a current system should confirm the model and production status directly with the vendor and evaluate present-day alternatives on target-specific detection, coverage, integration, sustainment and total lifecycle requirements.
