The Casio G-SHOCK MTG-B1000WLP-1A is a 2020 Wildlife Promising collaboration built around an African rock python-inspired pattern. It pairs distinctive black-and-bronze-toned detailing with MT-G construction, sapphire crystal, Tough Solar, Bluetooth and Multi Band 6 timekeeping. The trade-off is substantial wrist presence: it measures 55.8 × 51.7 × 14.4 mm and weighs 182 g. This is a compelling collector-oriented G-SHOCK, but not a lightweight or universally wearable one.
First, identify the exact watch
The model discussed here is the G-SHOCK MTG-B1000WLP-1A, part of Casio’s MT-G line and its MTG-B1000 series. Some European listings use the regional reference MTG-B1000WLP-1AER. Released in 2020, it is the Wildlife Promising collaboration themed around the African rock python. Casio’s regional product listing now identifies it as an old model, so treat it as a discontinued purchase rather than assuming ordinary current retail availability. Casio’s product page is the reference for its specification and design story.
It is easy to confuse this watch with other wildlife-themed G-SHOCKs. The GST-B300WLP-1A shares the 2020 python collaboration theme but belongs to G-STEEL, not MT-G. The GA-110WLP-7A is a later, 2021 Wildlife Promising model themed around the Grevy’s zebra, with a very different white-and-black look. Wildlife Promising BABY-G models are separate, smaller designs. Check the full reference, not just “WLP,” when comparing listings.
A python pattern, not python material
The MTG-B1000WLP-1A interprets python markings as an irregular pattern across the watch’s design. It is an inspired motif, not a leather strap or a watch made from python skin. Dark components and gold- or bronze-toned metal details create a more ornate effect than the restrained black-and-steel look of many G-SHOCKs. The motif, collaboration markings and matching patterned package make the theme visible without turning the watch into a literal snake illustration.

Casio describes the collaboration as a tribute to the African rock python and its distinctive markings. It also notes the species in connection with the Washington Convention; that wording should be understood as Casio’s explanation of the theme, not as a substitute for independent wildlife-status information. The case back carries the “Love The Sea And The Earth” symbol, connecting the watch to Casio’s broader environmental collaboration program. Casio’s sustainability reporting includes Wildlife Promising among organizations supported through G-SHOCK and BABY-G collaboration models. That supports describing this as a conservation-themed partnership, but does not establish a specific donation amount for each watch sold.
The design’s appeal depends on how much visual activity you want. The python-inspired pattern and warm metal accents distinguish it from a conventional utility watch; they may also make it harder to pair with conservative clothing. Under different light, contrast between darker surfaces and reflective metal finishing can change how prominent the detailing appears. Casio describes the MT-G platform as combining finishing approaches such as polishing, hairline treatment, knurling and honing. Those platform techniques should not be mistaken for proof that every patterned surface uses a special python-specific process.
Materials and construction: premium, but not all-metal
“Metal G-SHOCK” is a useful shorthand, but this is not solid metal throughout. Casio specifies a resin/stainless-steel case and a stainless-steel/resin composite band. The premium character comes from the combination of metal surfaces and finishing, the MT-G architecture, the composite bracelet and a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. That mix keeps the shock-resistant G-SHOCK concept while giving the watch a more substantial, refined presentation.

The crystal is a practical upgrade for a watch intended to be worn, though sapphire is not invulnerable: an edge impact can still chip it. Polished metal surfaces can pick up visible scratches, while brushed or darker-finished surfaces will show wear differently. On a used example, inspect the crystal edges, bezel transitions, bracelet and clasp closely rather than assuming that a premium material means pristine condition.
Size and weight are the central fit questions

A 55.8 mm length and 51.7 mm width make this a large watch, and its 182 g weight is well beyond what most people expect from a resin G-SHOCK. The composite bracelet is intended to integrate metal and resin, but no specification can tell you whether the watch will overhang your wrist, pinch, or feel tiring over a long day. Try it on if possible, especially if you have a smaller wrist. Check whether the bracelet can be sized to fit securely and whether the thickness clears the cuffs you wear most often.
The same mass can feel reassuring to someone who likes a substantial metal watch and burdensome to someone who wants an unobtrusive sports watch. For desk work, driving and active use, comfort depends on how the case sits and whether the bracelet holds it steady. It is sensible to regard this as a statement-size MT-G rather than assume it will wear like a standard resin G-SHOCK. No wrist-size recommendation is reliable without an actual fit test.

Features: two ways to correct the time
The watch combines Bluetooth Mobile Link with Multi Band 6, but these are distinct systems. Bluetooth pairs the watch with a compatible phone and the Casio Watches app for automatic time adjustment, watch settings, world-time management, status information and phone finding. Casio says the app can manage world time across about 300 cities. App compatibility and feature availability depend on the phone and software support; do not assume every app function will remain available indefinitely for a discontinued model.
Multi Band 6 receives radio time-calibration signals where supported. It does not need a phone, but reception varies with geography and conditions. In the United States, the relevant signal is WWVB; buildings, interference, watch orientation and signal conditions can all affect reception. Neither system guarantees correction everywhere: Bluetooth needs a compatible paired phone, while radio calibration needs a usable signal. If both are unavailable, the watch can still operate as a solar quartz watch. Casio states accuracy of ±15 seconds per month when radio calibration and mobile linking are not being used.
Tough Solar recharges the watch from light. Casio rates operation at about five months on a full charge without further light exposure under normal use, or about 18 months stored in darkness with power saving enabled after a full charge. These figures are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every aging or poorly charged example will perform identically.

Other functions include shock resistance and Triple G Resist for shock, centrifugal force and vibration; a screw-lock crown; world time across 39 time zones; stopwatch; countdown timer; daily alarm; LED illumination; full auto-calendar through 2099; hand-home-position correction; power saving; and battery-level indication. The white Super Illuminator LED supports viewing in the dark. As with any analog-digital watch, the decorative layout and hands can make a quick glance less direct than on a simple three-hand dial; check the display in person if fast legibility matters to you. It is a connected analog-digital watch, not a smartwatch: there is no verified GPS, notification suite, heart-rate tracking or smartwatch-style app ecosystem.
What 200-meter water resistance does—and does not—mean
The model is specified for 200-meter water resistance, but that rating should not be treated as an unlimited diving recommendation. More importantly, the rating describes the watch specification, not the condition of a particular second-hand unit. Seals age, and a watch may have been opened or damaged. If you plan to use a pre-owned example in water, have its pressure resistance checked first.

Is it worth pursuing as a discontinued watch?
The MTG-B1000WLP-1A makes the most sense for someone who specifically wants the Wildlife Promising python theme, MT-G finishing and a substantial analog-digital G-SHOCK. Sapphire, solar power, radio calibration, Bluetooth and 200-meter water resistance give it a serious specification set; the conservation collaboration and matching pattern make it more distinctive than a standard MT-G.

It is a weaker choice if your priorities are low weight, modest dimensions, straightforward availability, simple repair or a plain daily beater. Its collector appeal does not prove that it is rare, nor does discontinued status alone justify a particular resale price. Prices vary by market, condition and completeness; no single current U.S. retail price is established here. Compare dated listings in your region and distinguish asking prices from completed-sale data.
Buying checklist for new-old-stock or pre-owned examples
- Confirm the reference: look for MTG-B1000WLP-1A or the regional MTG-B1000WLP-1AER. Compare the dial, case-back markings, bracelet, clasp and bezel with Casio’s official images.
- Assess authenticity carefully: request clear photographs of the reference and case back, plus original packaging and documentation if included. A box alone does not prove authenticity, and photos cannot conclusively authenticate a watch. Check seller history and insist on a meaningful return policy.
- Check condition: examine sapphire edges for chips, polished sections for deep scratches, clasp for deformation, bracelet for looseness, and resin parts for deterioration or cracks. Confirm the crown screws in and locks correctly.
- Test functions: ask for evidence of solar charging, Bluetooth pairing, radio reception where practical, hand alignment and home-position correction. Look for condensation beneath the crystal and ask whether the watch has been pressure-tested.
- Budget for fit and service: establish how the bracelet is adjusted and whether its available links will fit your wrist. For water use, arrange a pressure test; for uncertain operation, factor in inspection or service rather than relying on a seller’s broad “working” claim.
New-old-stock may offer cleaner condition, but it is still old inventory and does not automatically guarantee a current manufacturer warranty or a fresh battery/charge state. Pre-owned examples can be better value, but condition, authenticity, parts and seller protections become more important. Avoid an unknown listing that lacks reference and case-back photos, a demonstration of functions or a usable return period.
Verdict
The MTG-B1000WLP-1A is distinctive, technically capable and unusually expressive for an MT-G. Its python-inspired design and conservation connection are integrated across the watch and packaging, while the sapphire crystal, solar power and dual time-adjustment options give it substance beyond appearance. But 182 g and a roughly 52 mm-wide case narrow its audience. Buy it because you want this particular collaboration and have confirmed the fit, condition and seller—not simply because it is a discontinued “metal G-SHOCK.”
