The G-SHOCK G-SQUAD HRM is the DW-H5600 family: a rugged, square fitness watch with optical heart-rate monitoring, blood-oxygen readings, workout tracking and Polar-based training and sleep analysis. It is best thought of as a durable fitness watch with some phone-connected features—not a full smartwatch. The exact variant shown in a video may differ, so check the reference number before relying on a feature or price.
What does “HRM” mean?
HRM stands for heart-rate monitor. The DW-H5600 has an optical sensor on its caseback that reads heart rate at the wrist, including during workouts. Its accelerometer also supports step tracking, and the watch can measure blood oxygen. These are consumer fitness and wellness readings, not medical diagnoses or substitutes for clinical equipment.
As with other wrist-based optical sensors, readings can be affected by a loose fit, cold skin, tattoos, sweat, heavy wrist movement and rapid changes in effort. Interval training and weight lifting can be particularly challenging for wrist sensors. Treat the numbers as useful guidance and trends rather than laboratory-grade measurements; anyone who needs dependable heart-rate data for serious training may prefer a chest strap.

“G-SQUAD HRM” is a family-level description, not one complete product number. The relevant watches are in the DW-H5600 family, including standard resin-bezel versions and metal-bezel DW-H5600MB variants. The DW-H5600EX is an interchangeable-case edition. Published references include DW-H5600-1D, DW-H5600-2D, DW-H5600MB-1D, DW-H5600MB-2D and DW-H5600EX-1D; regional pages may use different suffixes, such as -1A4 or -1ER. Color, bezel, packaging and local availability can vary, so confirm the full reference on the caseback, box or official regional listing. Time+Tide’s hands-on coverage identifies the DW-H5600 family, while Casio’s DW-H5600MB listing documents an official metal-bezel variant.

Fitness, health and recovery features
Casio lists running, walking, gym workouts and interval training among the watch’s activity categories. It can show workout measurements and sync activity history to a phone for review. Those categories do not mean every sport gets the same metrics or that the DW-H5600 is equivalent to a dedicated multisport watch.
Polar technology underpins training and recovery tools, including cardio-load and training-status information, sleep analysis, breathing exercises and estimates related to energy use. The watch also records sleep-related information and blood-oxygen measurements. These features can help you spot patterns, but cardio load, recovery and sleep results are interpretations of sensor data—not direct clinical measurements. SpO₂ readings can vary with fit and conditions, and sleep tracking is not a sleep study. The relatively thick case may also feel cumbersome to some people overnight.

Design and fit: a familiar square, with more bulk
The DW-H5600 keeps the recognizable 5600-series square profile but is substantially thicker than a basic DW-5600. Published dimensions are approximately 44.5 mm wide, 51.7 mm lug-to-lug and 16.6 mm thick, with a 23 mm lug width. It uses a resin case and strap; selected versions add a metal bezel. The crystal is mineral, not sapphire.
The curved strap can help it sit on a smaller wrist, but the overall height and sensor bulge on the caseback are worth considering. The watch may catch on a snug shirt cuff, and the 23 mm lug width can limit strap choices. If you want a slim watch for formal wear, or do not like sleeping in a bulky watch, try it on before buying.
Display and phone features
A high-resolution memory-in-pixel (MIP) LCD provides the watch’s information and is backlit for low light. It is a practical, watch-style display rather than an AMOLED screen: do not expect animated graphics or the app-like, customizable watch-face experience of an Apple Watch or Wear OS device.

Bluetooth links the watch with a phone for functions such as automatic time adjustment, notifications, activity-history synchronization, training and sleep analysis, phone finding and world-time configuration. The watch is not a broad app platform: the dossier does not establish app installation, contactless payments or advanced notification controls. Check the Casio support page or manual for your region to identify the right companion app and setup steps rather than assuming that an older G-SHOCK app still applies.
Does the DW-H5600 have GPS?
Do not confuse the DW-H5600 with the GBD-H2000. The available DW-H5600 product information establishes Bluetooth and fitness tracking but does not establish built-in GPS. Casio corporate material identifies GPS on the separate, larger and rounder GBD-H2000. A phone may supply location information for a connected activity if the relevant setup supports it, but that is not onboard GPS. If you need GPS without carrying a phone, verify the exact model’s manual before buying.
Casio’s corporate material on the GBD-H2000 is a useful point of distinction; GPS features of that watch should not be attributed to the DW-H5600.

Charging and battery life
The DW-H5600 uses USB charging for its training and connected functions, with solar assistance for timekeeping. Casio gives an approximate full-charge time of three hours and estimates around one week of operation with roughly an hour of activity use per day. Published figures also include up to about 35 hours using activity functions and heart-rate measurement, about one month in watch mode with heart-rate measurement off, and up to 11 months with power saving enabled. These are mode-dependent estimates, not a promise of the same runtime for every user.
Workout frequency, continuous heart-rate tracking, notifications, Bluetooth, backlight use and available light all affect endurance. Solar assistance does not mean the training and smart features run indefinitely without USB charging. For the official charging description, see Casio’s product information.

The published specification is 200 metres of water resistance, alongside G-SHOCK’s shock-resistant design. That makes the watch suitable for swimming and ordinary water exposure when used as Casio instructs, but it is not a dive computer. Water resistance can be affected by aging seals or impacts; follow the manual on operating buttons around water, and do not charge the watch while it is wet.

They are different G-SQUAD watches, not alternate names for the same model. Do not use GBD-H2000 GPS or battery claims to describe the DW-H5600.
Who should buy the DW-H5600?
It makes the most sense for someone who wants a recognizable, durable G-SHOCK square and also wants wrist-based heart-rate tracking, activity logs and wellness trends. It can suit casual runners, gym users and people who want more training information than a traditional G-SHOCK offers, without turning the watch into a miniature phone.
Look elsewhere if your priorities are built-in GPS, route navigation, a deep third-party training ecosystem, extensive smartwatch apps, payments, a bright AMOLED screen or a thin case. Garmin Forerunner models generally target GPS-led training; Apple Watch targets a broader smartwatch experience; Polar watches focus more directly on Polar’s sports ecosystem. Those alternatives have different strengths and should be compared by exact model rather than by brand alone.
Price and availability
Prices vary by market and variant. The original hands-on article listed launch-era Australian prices of A$449 for plastic-bezel versions, A$499 for metal-bezel versions and A$649 for the interchangeable-case edition. Those are historical figures, not current quotes. A secondary report cited a US$320 launch price for selected DW-H5600MB models, which likewise should not be treated as a current US price. Check Casio’s local listing and retailer availability for the exact suffix before purchasing.
