To request a transparent image from OpenAI’s Images API, set the structured background parameter to transparent, use a model that currently supports transparent output, and request PNG or WebP. Then decode the returned image and verify that it contains alpha transparency. A prompt that says “transparent background” is not a substitute for the API setting, and a checkerboard drawn into an image is not transparency.
This guide covers the OpenAI API behavior documented as of September 29, 2026. Model compatibility and preview status can change, so check OpenAI’s current model reference before depending on transparency in production. Other image-generation providers may use different parameter names, values, and format rules.
What does the image API’s background parameter control?
background is a structured output control: it tells the image-generation API how to handle the generated image’s background. In OpenAI’s Images API, the documented values are transparent, opaque, and auto; if you omit the parameter, the documented default is auto. Do not confuse this setting with a front-end canvas element’s CSS background. Here, “canvas background” means the background behavior of the generated image file.
Which background value should you choose?

The use cases in the table are practical interpretations of the documented parameter semantics, not guarantees about a particular model’s visual output. OpenAI’s reference makes support model-specific and flags some support as preview; verify the current reference for the exact model and API route you intend to use before relying on it. How to request a transparent background
- Choose a currently supported model. Check OpenAI’s live image API reference for transparent-background support and whether the relevant support is marked preview. Do not assume support carries across models or versions.
- Set the output control explicitly. Include
background: "transparent"in the request’s structured image-generation options. OpenAI’s official Python SDK parameter type liststransparent,opaque, andautoas API values; these are not free-form prompt terms. (OpenAI Python SDK generated parameter type, checked September 29, 2026.) - Request a transparency-capable format. Choose PNG or WebP. The OpenAI guide says to use PNG or WebP for transparent output.
- Generate and decode the response. A successful API response means the request completed; it does not by itself establish that the file contains useful alpha transparency.
- Inspect alpha data. Check the decoded image’s alpha channel, including edges and soft or translucent details. If downstream compositing matters, test the asset over a contrasting background as well.
OpenAI documents image generation through both the Image API and the Responses API. The setting belongs with the image-generation output options for the route and SDK version you use; consult the current route-specific reference for request structure rather than copying parameters between endpoints blindly. The image-generation tool documentation also lists size, quality, format, compression, and action as configurable output controls. Why format and model support are separate requirements
Transparency depends on both the generator and the file format. A model must support transparent output, and the encoded image format must be able to carry transparency. Setting background to transparent cannot add an alpha channel to a format that does not support it.
- PNG: OpenAI’s image-generation guide recommends PNG for transparent output; the Image API guide identifies PNG as its default output format.
- WebP: OpenAI’s guide also identifies WebP as an option for transparent output.
- JPEG: Do not use JPEG when alpha transparency is required. In the GPT Image 2 workflow described by OpenAI’s guide, JPEG is unsupported with transparent backgrounds. This is a model/workflow-specific statement, not a claim about every image-generation API.
OpenAI’s guides describe PNG, JPEG, or WebP as format choices in the documented image-generation workflows, but the accepted combinations can depend on the model and route. For transparent output, follow the documented PNG or WebP guidance and check the current reference for your target model. How to verify that the returned file is really transparent
A preview can be misleading. Some viewers display transparency as a checkerboard; an image generator can also draw a checkerboard pattern into an ordinary opaque image. The visual pattern alone does not tell you which case you have. Decode the downloaded file and inspect whether it has an alpha channel and whether pixels in the background have transparency.

- Check that the decoded image mode or pixel data includes alpha, not just red, green, and blue channels.
- Inspect background pixels for alpha values below fully opaque. A file may have an alpha channel while the entire image remains opaque.
- Zoom in around hair, glass, shadows, fine product edges, and other details where partial transparency or halos are easiest to miss.
- Composite the result over both a light and a dark color. This can reveal fringes that are hard to see against the viewer’s default preview.
OpenAI’s prompting guide specifically recommends checking the decoded image’s alpha channel and calls attention to hair, glass, shadows, and object edges. The selected model does not support transparency
OpenAI’s reference makes transparent-background availability model-specific, and some listed support is preview. Confirm the exact model’s current support before changing prompts or retrying repeatedly. A parameter accepted by one model is not proof that another model supports the same behavior.
The request used an incompatible output format
For OpenAI’s documented transparent workflow, choose PNG or WebP. If the workflow returns JPEG, it cannot preserve alpha transparency; GPT Image 2’s guide specifically says JPEG is unsupported for transparent backgrounds. Check the effective output format in the request and the decoded file.

The prompt and API setting disagree
A prompt can ask for a transparent background while the structured setting is omitted or set to opaque. The API value controls the output request; adjust it to transparent rather than relying on prompt wording alone.
The image contains a visual imitation
If the background looks like a checkerboard but remains opaque when decoded, the pattern may be part of the pixels. Validate alpha values instead of judging only from a thumbnail or screenshot.
The output differs across model versions or routes
Support and preview status can change. Verify the current API reference for the exact model and route, then make a controlled comparison using the same prompt, input images, size, and quality while changing only the background setting. This isolates the effect of the setting; it is a testing method, not a claim that a particular result is guaranteed.

Choose background alongside the other output settings
Background is one output decision, not a replacement for the other image controls. OpenAI’s tool documentation lists size, quality, format, compression, and action among the configurable settings. Decide what the asset needs before generation:
- Background behavior: choose transparent for compositing, opaque for a self-contained scene, or auto if delegating the choice is acceptable.
- Format: use PNG or WebP when transparency must survive encoding.
- Size and quality: match the intended display or production use; compare supported quality choices against latency needs.
- Action and input context: distinguish a new generation from an image-editing workflow and use the route’s documented controls.
When evaluating alternatives, hold the prompt, input images, size, and quality constant, then verify the decoded files. Compare the actual transparency and edge treatment rather than assuming that an identical prompt or setting yields identical results on different models.
