If Snapchat will not record video, first check its Camera and Microphone permissions, then test your phone’s built-in Camera app. This quickly shows whether the problem is Snapchat or the device. After that, force-close Snapchat, switch networks, update the app, restart the phone, and clear Snapchat’s cache. Reinstall only after confirming that Memories are backed up and that you can sign in again.
Start with this quick diagnostic
- Check that Snapchat can use the camera and microphone.
- Open the phone’s built-in Camera app and record a short clip with both the front and rear cameras.
- Remove any case, lens cover, or accessory that could obstruct the camera.
- Close other apps that may be using the camera or microphone, including video-call apps and QR scanners.
- Force-close Snapchat and reopen it.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Update Snapchat and restart the phone.
- Clear Snapchat’s cache.

What exactly is failing?
Different symptoms point to different causes:

Check camera and microphone permissions
iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Camera.
- Turn on access for Snapchat.
- Return to Privacy & Security, tap Microphone, and enable Snapchat.
- Reopen Snapchat and record a short test video.
Apple provides separate camera and microphone controls under Settings > Privacy & Security. See its iPhone privacy-control guide.
If Snapchat is missing from the list, it may not have requested access on this installation, or a Screen Time, parental-control, school, employer, or other device-management restriction may be blocking changes. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Apple documents these restrictions in its Screen Time guidance.

The green camera and orange microphone indicators can show when an app is using those features. Their absence alone does not prove Snapchat is broken.
Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select Snapchat, then Permissions.
- Allow Camera and Microphone.
- Reopen Snapchat and test recording.
Menu names vary on Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other phones. Android’s general route is documented in Google’s permissions guide.
Also check the device-wide controls. Open Settings > Security & privacy or Privacy, then make sure Camera access and Microphone access are enabled. A global switch can block Snapchat even when the app’s individual permission appears allowed.
Snapchat also has an in-app permissions page: Profile > Settings (the gear icon) > App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data > Permissions. This explains what Snapchat uses camera and microphone access for, but the phone’s system settings still control access. See Snapchat’s permissions instructions.
Test the phone’s regular Camera app
Record a short clip with both the front and rear cameras in the built-in Camera app.

- If it also fails: the cause may be a device-level privacy restriction, another app holding the camera, an operating-system problem, or hardware damage.
- If it works: Snapchat’s permissions, app state, cache, update compatibility, or a Snapchat-specific bug becomes more likely.
- If only one camera fails: the affected camera module or the app’s camera switching may be involved.
- If video works but audio fails: check microphone access and test a voice recorder or another camera app.
Do not factory-reset the phone as a routine Snapchat fix. That is disproportionate unless broader device corruption has been diagnosed and you have a complete backup.
Fix a frozen, black, or inactive Snapchat camera
1. Relaunch Snapchat and restart the phone
Force-close Snapchat completely, open it again, and retry. If that fails, restart the phone. This can release a temporary camera-service lock or clear a frozen app state.

Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to Wi-Fi. If recording works on one connection but not the other, investigate the affected network or carrier rather than changing camera settings repeatedly.
3. Update Snapchat and the operating system
Check the Apple App Store on iPhone or the Google Play Store on Android. Snapchat also identifies the Amazon Appstore for supported installations. Check for a pending iOS or Android update as well.
An OS update can improve compatibility, but a newly released OS can also temporarily expose an app bug. If the problem began immediately after an update, check Snapchat’s official support communications before assuming your phone is damaged. 4. Clear Snapchat’s cache
In Snapchat, open Profile > Settings > App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data.

- iPhone: under Manage My Data, tap Clear Cache, then Clear.
- Android: tap Clear Data > Clear Cache, then confirm.
Snapchat says clearing its cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats. This is not the same as using Android’s system setting to Clear storage or Clear data, which is more disruptive and may sign you out. See Snapchat’s cache-clearing instructions.
If Snapchat records video without sound
- Confirm that Snapchat has microphone permission.
- Check Android’s or iPhone’s global microphone control.
- Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or microphones temporarily; audio may be routed to them.
- Test the built-in Camera app and a voice-recording app.
- Restart Snapchat and the phone.
- Update Snapchat and clear its cache.
Distinguish missing audio from muted playback, Bluetooth routing, denied permission, and an actual recording failure. If the microphone fails in several apps, the phone may need support. If it fails only in Snapchat, report the issue as a Snapchat bug. Snapchat has separate image and audio troubleshooting coverage.

Recording and saving use different permissions and can fail independently.
- Check Snapchat’s Photos or Photos and Videos permission.
- Check available phone storage.
- Try saving a short clip instead of a long video.
- Test saving to Memories and the Camera Roll separately, if both options are available.
- Restart the app and phone, update Snapchat, and clear its cache.
Do not clear Android app data or uninstall Snapchat until important Memories are backed up and you know your login details. Snapchat explains that storage permissions are used to save Snaps and Stories to the device gallery and manage cached content in its permissions guide.

Reinstall Snapchat only as a later step
A clean installation can reset corrupted app state and cause permission prompts to appear again, but it is not guaranteed to fix the problem.
- Confirm that you know your Snapchat username and password.
- Make sure you can complete two-factor authentication or account recovery.
- Verify that important Memories are backed up.
- Uninstall Snapchat.
- Restart the phone.
- Reinstall Snapchat from the official app store.
- Sign in and grant camera, microphone, and required photo/media permissions.
- Test recording before restoring optional settings.
Do not assume unsent Snaps, drafts, or other locally stored content will survive logout, clearing data, uninstalling, or reinstalling.
When the phone may need support or repair
Contact the phone manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the built-in Camera app and other camera apps also fail, the phone reports persistent camera errors, the device was dropped or exposed to liquid, the lens is cracked or fogged, the microphone fails in multiple apps, or the phone overheats or crashes whenever recording begins. These signs may indicate a phone-level problem; they do not prove a particular component is defective.
Report a Snapchat bug
If the native Camera app works but Snapchat still cannot record after permissions, updates, restart, network switching, and cache clearing, report it to Snapchat:

- Open Snapchat and go to your profile or My Account.
- Tap the gear icon.
- Scroll to Support and Safety.
- Tap Bugs and Suggestions.
- Choose Report a Bug and follow the prompts.
Include your phone model, iOS or Android version, Snapchat version if visible, whether the front or rear camera fails, whether the native Camera app works, the exact error, when the issue began, whether audio or saving is also affected, whether Wi-Fi and mobile data behave differently, and the troubleshooting steps you already tried.
A single recording failure is more likely to be local than a platform-wide outage. Ask whether other Snapchat features load and whether friends have the same problem. Check Snapchat’s official support or status communications if available, but do not treat third-party outage reports alone as proof that Snapchat is down.
