If Leave This Conversation is missing, the chat is probably not a qualifying group iMessage—or it has fewer than four people in total. Apple’s built-in leave option is for group iMessages with at least three other participants, all using iMessage on Apple devices. If the thread is SMS, MMS, or RCS, you may need to mute it, delete it, or block it instead.
Try leaving the conversation
- Open Messages and open the group conversation.
- Tap the group or participant icons at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Leave This Conversation.
- Tap Leave Conversation to confirm.
Apple’s requirement is at least three other people in a group iMessage—four participants total—and everyone must be using iMessage on an Apple device. See Apple’s instructions for leaving a group text. On older iOS versions, including iOS 14 and earlier, you may need to tap the Info button after tapping the group icons.
Why “Leave This Conversation” is missing

Apple identifies blue bubbles with group iMessage and green bubbles with group SMS, MMS, or RCS. Green does not automatically mean that someone is using Android: RCS is also green, and a person with an Apple device may not have iMessage enabled or available. Apple’s group messaging guide explains these message types. RCS messaging on iPhone requires iOS 18 or later and availability depends on carrier and region; the setting is under Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging.

Mute the group with Hide Alerts
If you cannot leave, Hide Alerts stops notifications from that particular conversation without muting other messages.

- Open the group conversation in Messages.
- Tap the group icons at the top.
- Scroll down and turn on Hide Alerts.
Or, from the conversation list, swipe left on the thread and tap the alerts button. In iOS 15 and later, look for the Hide Alerts icon; older versions may show a crescent moon.
Delete or block an unwanted group
Deleting a conversation is not the same as leaving it. It removes the thread from your visible Messages list, but does not necessarily remove your number from the group or stop new messages. The thread may reappear if someone sends another message.

For an unwanted MMS or RCS group, iOS 17 and later may offer Delete and Block This Conversation in the group details. Apple documents this control for MMS and RCS groups. Use it only if you are comfortable blocking the conversation: it is more consequential than muting and may be unsuitable when you still need legitimate messages from people in the group. If the group is a carrier-based text thread and you need to stop being included, a practical workaround is to ask the organizer to start a new conversation without you. That is not an iPhone setting, but it can be the cleanest fix when the message type has no leave control.

Other details worth knowing
- Updating iOS may change the interface, not the eligibility rule. An update cannot turn an SMS, MMS, or RCS group into a group iMessage or make an undersized group eligible to leave.
- Leaving does not necessarily revoke shared-project access. If the conversation includes a shared Notes project, file, or other collaborative content, the service hosting that content controls access. Apple flags this caveat in its leave-conversation guidance.
- Removing someone else is a different action. Apple allows removal only in an eligible group with at least four people and everyone using an Apple device. In the group details, touch and hold the person, then tap Remove from Group and Remove. See Apple’s instructions for adding and removing people.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I leave a group text with Android users?
If the conversation is using SMS, MMS, or RCS instead of group iMessage, Apple’s built-in Leave This Conversation option may not be available. Use Hide Alerts, or consider Delete and Block This Conversation for an eligible unwanted MMS/RCS group.
Can I leave a three-person iMessage group?
No. Apple requires at least three other participants, which means four people total, for its normal group-leave option.

Does deleting a group chat remove me from it?
No. Deleting removes the conversation from your visible list; it does not necessarily remove you from the group or stop future messages.

How do I stop notifications without leaving?
Open the group, tap its icons at the top, scroll down, and turn on Hide Alerts. You can also swipe left on the thread in the conversation list and tap the alerts button.

Can I remove someone else from an iPhone group chat?
Only in an eligible group with at least four people and everyone using an Apple device. Open the group details, touch and hold the person, then choose Remove from Group.
Why are my group messages green?
Green bubbles indicate SMS, MMS, or RCS rather than group iMessage. They do not by themselves prove that someone is using Android.
Can I block an RCS or MMS group?
