If Gmail attachments will not download, first refresh the message, try Gmail in a private window or another updated browser, and use Save to Drive as a diagnostic. If that does not help, the cause is usually a browser or app problem, a security restriction, confidential mode, a network block, insufficient storage, or an issue with the sender’s file.
Start with these quick fixes
- Open the email again and click or tap the attachment’s Download icon.
- Check your browser’s download history and Downloads folder. Gmail may have saved the file without opening it automatically.
- Try Gmail in an incognito or private window.
- Try another up-to-date browser, device, or authorized network.
- Temporarily disable extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, download managers, privacy tools, script blockers, VPN extensions, and browser-security add-ons.
- Try Save to Drive. It can reveal whether Gmail can retrieve the file even when the local download process fails.
Google recommends checking browsers, extensions, proxy settings, and cached data when Gmail attachments do not open or download. See Google’s attachment guidance.
First identify what is actually failing
The right fix depends on the symptom:

Check whether Gmail is intentionally blocking the file
Confidential mode
Confidential mode is not a download error. The sender can restrict downloading, copying, printing, and forwarding. Access may also expire, be revoked, or require a passcode.

Blocked or suspicious attachments
Gmail blocks many executable, script, installer, disk-image, and shortcut formats, including some files with extensions such as .exe, .dll, .js, .jar, .msi, .apk, .bat, .cmd, .scr, .vbs, and .iso. Google’s blocked-file rules can change, so consult the current blocked-attachment list rather than treating any list as permanent.
Do not rename a dangerous extension, disable antivirus protection, or download a suspicious file merely as a test. Ask the sender to upload it to Google Drive or an organization-approved service, or to export it in a safer format. Encrypted or unscannable attachments can also trigger warnings.
Fix Gmail downloads on a computer
Use the normal download path
- Open Gmail and the message.
- Scroll to the attachment below the message text.
- Hover over the attachment and click the Download icon.
- Check the browser’s download history and configured Downloads folder.
If a PDF or video preview fails, try downloading it anyway. Preview failure does not prove that the underlying file is unavailable. Gmail also notes that some video previews may fail even when the file can be downloaded and opened with a local video player.

Test the browser
Open Gmail in an incognito or private window. If the download works there, an extension, cookie, cached session, or browser setting is probably interfering. Re-enable extensions individually to find the conflict.

Next, try a current version of another mainstream browser. A difference between browsers points toward an extension, browser policy, proxy configuration, download permission, or security-software integration rather than the attachment itself.
Clear Gmail site data
Clear cookies or site data for Gmail, then reload and sign in again if prompted. Clearing only Gmail’s site data is preferable because clearing all browser cookies signs you out of other websites and removes other saved sessions. Google provides additional browser and Gmail loading guidance.
Check security software
If Gmail says the download succeeded but the file immediately disappears, antivirus or endpoint-security software may have quarantined it. Check the product’s quarantine and event logs instead of disabling protection. On a managed computer, ask your administrator to investigate.

- If Save to Drive works but Download fails, investigate the browser, Downloads folder, device permissions, or endpoint security.
- If both fail, suspect confidential mode, a security block, a network issue, a Gmail session problem, or the sender’s file.
- Save to Drive is not guaranteed to work for every attachment.
Fix the Gmail app on Android
- Open the Gmail app and the message.
- Tap the attachment’s Download icon, or tap Save to Drive.
- Check your device’s free storage and the Files app’s download location.
- Update Gmail and Android.
- Review Gmail’s permissions in Android Settings, particularly permissions needed by the destination app.
- Clear Gmail’s cache from Android’s app settings, but avoid Clear storage as a first step because it can remove local app data and require you to authenticate again.
- Try Gmail in a mobile browser or switch to another authorized network.
An image displayed inside the email body may not be a file attachment. Touch and hold the image, choose View image, and use the image menu to save it.

Fix the Gmail app on iPhone or iPad
- Open Gmail and the message, then tap the attachment.
- Choose the available download or save option, or select Save to Drive.
- Check the Files app, Photos, or Google Drive depending on the destination you selected.
- Update Gmail and iOS or iPadOS.
- Check available device storage.
- For images, review Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → Gmail and grant the required access.
Saving to Drive can avoid a local Photos or Files permission problem. You can also test the message in a mobile browser to determine whether the issue is limited to the app. See Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions.
When a network, VPN, or organization is blocking attachments
If the attachment works on cellular data or a home network but not on company, school, hotel, or public Wi-Fi, the network may be filtering it. Google specifically identifies mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com as a domain that an administrator or internet provider may block.

Test with another authorized connection, such as a personal hotspot, and compare the result. Possible causes include DNS filtering, firewall rules, proxy inspection, content filtering, and corporate security controls. Do not bypass an employer’s or school’s security policy without permission; ask the administrator to review the domain and the relevant logs.

Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos share account storage. If the account has reached its storage limit, it may be unable to send or receive attachments. Check storage before assuming the browser is broken. A storage upgrade can help only when storage is confirmed as the cause; it will not fix confidential mode, a blocked file type, an extension, or a network filter.
For a sudden problem affecting many users, check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard. A dashboard with no active incident does not rule out a local browser, device, account, or network problem.
For personal Gmail, Google documents a 25 MB total attachment limit for sending; larger files are generally sent as Google Drive links. Work and school accounts may have administrator-defined sending and receiving limits, so 25 MB should not be treated as a universal Workspace limit. See Google’s storage and attachment guidance.

When the sender must fix the problem
Contact the sender when the message uses confidential mode, access has expired or been revoked, the file is blocked by Gmail, the attachment appears incomplete, or the sender shared a Drive file with the wrong account.
Ask the sender to:
- Resend the file without confidential mode, when appropriate.
- Upload it to Google Drive and share it with the correct email address.
- Use an approved organizational file-sharing service.
- Export the document into a commonly supported format if the original is blocked.
- Resend the file if it may be damaged or incorrectly attached.
Do not conclude that a file is corrupt solely because its preview failed. Test Download, another browser or device, and a replacement copy first.
When to contact IT or Google support
Escalate when the problem persists across updated browsers, devices, and authorized networks; affects multiple accounts; involves a business-critical file; or produces a repeatable server-side error. Workspace administrators may control Gmail access, attachment limits, Drive sharing, confidential mode, data-loss prevention, endpoint security, and network filtering.
