If an AirTag will not pair with your iPhone, check compatibility, Apple Account setup, Bluetooth, Location Services, and the battery before resetting it. For AirTag (2nd generation), Apple’s model-specific support page requires iOS 26.2.1 or later; the original AirTag requires iOS 14.5 or later. Follow the steps below in order to find whether the blocker is the iPhone, the AirTag’s battery, an ownership lock, or your Find My item limit.
Check that your iPhone supports this AirTag
First identify which AirTag you have. Apple’s setup guidance lists different minimum software versions: the original AirTag requires iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later, while AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later. Check your iPhone’s version at Settings > General > About, then update from Settings > General > Software Update if needed. Apple’s [Store listing](https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-airtag/airtag) gives a generic iOS 26.0 requirement, but its [model-specific support instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/101602) say 26.2.1 for the second-generation AirTag; use that more specific threshold.
Try the normal setup, then use Find My if the prompt is missing
Pair with the proximity prompt
- Remove the isolation tab if the AirTag is new, unlock your iPhone, and hold one AirTag close to it.
- When the setup card appears, tap Connect.
- Choose a category, or choose Custom Name and select an emoji.
- Tap Agree or Continue to link the AirTag to your Apple Account, then tap Done.
The iPhone needs a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection to complete setup and account-related operations. The AirTag does not connect directly to Wi-Fi.

Add it manually in Find My
If no setup card appears, open Find My > Items > Add > Add AirTag or Other Item, then follow the onscreen instructions. If the animation appeared and vanished, press the iPhone’s side or Sleep/Wake button to put it to sleep, wake and unlock it, and wait about 15 seconds for the prompt to return. Keep other AirTags away: multiple nearby tags can trigger a “More than one AirTag detected” alert or make it unclear which one you are adding. Check the iPhone settings that setup depends on
Work through these checks, then restart the iPhone and try setup again. Apple includes each of these in its [AirTag troubleshooting steps](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/101602).
- Bluetooth: Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn it on.
- Location Services: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and turn it on. In the app list, open Find My and allow location access; enable Precise Location for the most accurate location information.
- Apple Account alerts: Tap your name at the top of Settings. If you see Update Apple Account Settings, complete it. If you see Some iCloud data isn’t syncing, tap Resume data sync.
- iCloud Keychain: On current iOS, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Passwords and turn on Sync this iPhone. On iOS 17 or earlier, look for Passwords & Keychain. Apple says the iPhone should be updated and two-factor authentication enabled for the Apple Account. See [Apple’s iCloud Keychain instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/109016).
- Internet: Confirm the iPhone can reach the internet over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
After correcting a setting or account alert, restart the iPhone before another attempt. Do not turn off account security features as a workaround.
Check the battery and its contact
A new AirTag may still have its isolation tab in place, and a used or long-stored tag may have a depleted battery. If it does not chime after a battery change, check that the battery is oriented correctly, makes contact, and that the cover locks fully.

- Press down on the polished stainless-steel cover and rotate it counterclockwise until it stops; remove the cover and battery.
- Insert a CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery with the positive side facing up. A sound should play when the battery connects.
- Align the cover’s three tabs with the AirTag’s three slots and rotate clockwise until it stops.
Apple notes that some bitterant-coated CR2032 batteries may not work with AirTag. It recommends a bitterant-coated battery marked as compatible with Apple AirTag where possible, so check the package rather than assuming every CR2032 works. Keep coin batteries and the AirTag’s small parts away from children because they can present choking or injury hazards. Rule out an AirTag linked to someone else’s Apple Account
An AirTag can belong to only one Apple Account at a time. If it was gifted, bought used, returned, or inherited, its previous owner must remove it from their Apple Account before you can use it. A reset cannot bypass that ownership association.
Ask the previous owner to remove the AirTag from their account. If they removed it while the tag was out of Bluetooth range, Apple says it may still need a reset before it can be paired. Check whether Find My has reached its item limit
If the iPhone says new items cannot be added, the issue may be the account’s Find My capacity rather than the AirTag. Apple currently allows up to 32 items, counting shared items and accessories. AirPods count specially: AirPods Max count as one item; AirPods and AirPods Pro 1 count as two; AirPods Pro 2 and later count as three. Items in the Items tab and AirPods in the Devices tab count toward the limit.
- Open Find My and review the Items tab.
- Review AirPods in the Devices tab as well.
- Remove an obsolete item or accessory you no longer need, then try adding the AirTag again.
Shared items also count, so removing only an unused personal AirTag may not free a slot. Apple’s current limit and counting rules are on its [setup support page](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/101602).
Reset only after the checks above
Resetting can clear a pairing state, but it does not release an AirTag from another person’s Apple Account. The procedure also differs by generation, so identify your model before starting. Apple’s [reset instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102577) specify the following steps.

Reset the original AirTag
- Press down on the stainless-steel battery cover and rotate it counterclockwise; remove the cover and battery.
- Replace the battery and press down on it for about 2 seconds, until a sound plays.
- Repeat removing, replacing, and pressing the battery four more times. There should be five sounds in total; the fifth sounds different and indicates the AirTag is ready to pair.
- If the fifth sound is not distinct, continue until it is. Then replace and lock the cover.
Reset AirTag (2nd generation)
- Remove the cover and battery, then replace the battery.
- Press the battery for about 2 seconds until it sounds, then keep pressing for another 2 seconds.
- Remove the battery and wait 12 seconds.
- Repeat the replace, press, remove, and 12-second wait sequence four more times. Listen for five sounds; the fifth should be different and indicates pairing readiness.
- Replace and secure the cover.
When to contact Apple
Contact [Apple Support](https://getsupport.apple.com/) if the AirTag still cannot be added after the compatible iOS update, settings and account checks, battery check, and correct reset procedure. Escalate especially if it makes no sound with a known-good compatible battery, never produces the distinct fifth reset sound, or remains undetectable on multiple compatible iPhones. If it is linked to a previous owner, that owner must remove it; support cannot make a reset bypass the account link.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my AirTag not showing up on my iPhone?
The cause may be an incompatible iOS version, Bluetooth or Location Services being off, incomplete Apple Account setup, a weak internet connection, a dead or poorly seated battery, an AirTag linked to another account, or the Find My item limit. Check these in that order before resetting.
Can I set up an AirTag without the popup?
Yes. Open Find My, tap Items, tap Add, then tap Add AirTag or Other Item and follow the onscreen instructions.

Can I reset an AirTag linked to another person?
You can reset its hardware, but that does not remove the previous owner’s Apple Account association. The previous owner must remove the AirTag from their account first.
Why does Find My say I cannot add more items?
You may have reached the 32-item Find My limit. Shared items and accessories count, and AirPods have model-specific counting rules. Review both Items and AirPods in Devices.
