Yes. If your emulator runs on a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer, you can use a phone as a controller with a virtual-gamepad app, or stream the emulator to the phone with Steam Link or Moonlight. Those are different setups: a virtual gamepad sends input to the computer while you play on its display; streaming puts the game on your phone and sends input back. If the emulator runs on the phone itself, the phone already provides the screen and can use on-screen controls.

Choose the setup that matches where you play

What you want Use What the phone does
Play on a computer monitor or TV, using your phone as a spare controller A virtual-gamepad app with a PC receiver Sends button and stick input to the PC
Play the PC emulator on your phone Steam Link or Moonlight Shows the PC stream and forwards input
Run the emulator on the phone The emulator’s on-screen controls, or a physical controller Runs the game and displays it

A streaming app is not automatically a general-purpose virtual controller. Steam Link and Moonlight are useful when you want the PC’s picture on your phone; a virtual-gamepad app is the more direct choice if you already have a separate screen.

Use a virtual gamepad when the emulator runs on your PC

A virtual-controller app needs a phone app and a PC-side receiver or host. The computer must recognize the phone as a controller before the emulator can use it. Monect PC Remote, for example, says it can simulate Xbox 360/XInput-style and DirectInput controllers, and lists Wi-Fi, USB, and Bluetooth connection options. Check its controller-mode documentation and connection instructions for current app-specific details.

  1. Install the phone app from its official app-store listing and install the matching PC receiver from the developer.
  2. Connect the phone and computer using a method the app supports. For Wi-Fi discovery, put them on the same local network; guest networks may prevent devices from seeing one another.
  3. In the phone app, select the computer and choose a gamepad layout—not mouse, keyboard, or touchpad mode.
  4. Start with Xbox/XInput mode if offered. It is often the simplest choice for Windows emulators and software that expects Xbox-style controls. Try DirectInput if the emulator does not detect the device or the button mapping is wrong.
  5. Test the device in the computer’s controller-testing interface before opening the emulator. Confirm that every button registers and that both sticks move as axes rather than acting like buttons.
  6. Open the emulator’s input settings, select the detected device, bind controls, and save the profile. Device names and numbering may differ or change when other controllers are connected.

Android and iPhone support depends on the particular app; do not assume that every Android app has an iOS version or identical features. Monect lists Android and iOS clients and a Windows receiver on its product page. Its iOS listing describes a free download with in-app purchases; availability and prices can vary by storefront and change over time.

XInput or DirectInput?

  • Try XInput first for a Windows setup when the emulator offers an Xbox or XInput device. Many modern games and emulators handle this familiar layout readily.
  • Try DirectInput if the emulator exposes generic joystick devices, the app offers no working XInput mode, or the controls appear in an incorrect order.

These are controller interfaces, not guarantees of compatibility. The right choice is the mode that the operating system and your emulator both recognize and map correctly.

Stream the PC emulator to your phone

Choose streaming if you want the phone to be both the display and the control surface. It requires a host PC, a client app on the phone, and a network connection good enough for responsive video and input.

Steam Link

  1. Install and run Steam on the host computer, and install Steam Link on the phone.
  2. Pair the phone with the computer through Steam Link.
  3. If the emulator is not in your Steam library, add it as a non-Steam game, then launch it through Steam Link.
  4. Configure Steam’s mobile touch controls and the emulator’s input settings, then test the controls in a game.

Valve describes Steam Link as streaming video and audio from a computer running Steam to a mobile device; Steam also documents mobile touch-controller configurations. See Steam Remote Play and its mobile touch-controller documentation. This is not the same as installing a standalone app that exposes a permanent virtual Xbox controller to the computer.

Moonlight

Moonlight is another route for streaming a PC desktop or emulator to a phone. It generally requires a compatible host configuration, commonly Sunshine. Install and configure the host, install Moonlight on the phone, pair the devices, then launch the desktop or emulator. You can use touchscreen controls or connect a physical controller to the phone. Moonlight’s setup guide describes mobile input being sent back to the PC. Exact setup depends on the host and client configuration.

What works with different emulators?

The key compatibility test is whether the emulator can read the controller protocol the phone app exposes. A standard button-and-stick layout is a reasonable fit for many games, but it cannot automatically reproduce specialized console controls.

Emulator or system What to expect
NES, SNES, Genesis, and many arcade games Often straightforward: bind a few buttons and a directional input.
PlayStation and PS2 emulators Usually workable with a recognized gamepad, though manual mapping and device selection may be needed.
RetroArch, PPSSPP, and similar standard-gamepad setups Often suitable for ordinary gamepad input; check the installed build’s input settings and map the detected device.
Dolphin / GameCube Standard GameCube-style controls can work with a mapped gamepad. Dolphin has its own controller configuration guide; Wii Remote pairing and configuration are separate considerations.
Wii A phone gamepad may cover some buttons, but Wii games can require motion, pointing, or other Wii Remote functions that a basic virtual gamepad does not provide.
Wii U GamePad-specific functions and a second screen make a phone a much less complete substitute.
DS and 3DS Dual screens, touch input, and sometimes microphone or motion features can require more than a conventional gamepad.

For motion-based games, some apps advertise use of the phone’s accelerometer or gyroscope. Monect describes sensor-based layouts, but sensor input is not a guaranteed replacement for a console’s motion controller: orientation, calibration, filtering, latency, and emulator support all matter.

Troubleshoot common problems

The computer cannot see the phone

  • Make sure the PC receiver is running and the phone is in gamepad mode.
  • For Wi-Fi, check that both devices are on the same local network; guest Wi-Fi or client isolation can block discovery.
  • Check firewall or antivirus rules for the receiver. Monect specifically recommends allowing its service if the PC is not visible.
  • If using Bluetooth or USB, verify that the app supports that connection method and that the required pairing, drivers, or tethering setup is in place. Bluetooth pairing alone does not make every phone a Bluetooth gamepad.

The emulator sees a controller, but the buttons are wrong

  1. Reset or create a fresh controller profile in the emulator.
  2. Confirm that you selected the phone’s virtual controller, not another physical or virtual device.
  3. Try XInput first, then DirectInput if detection or button ordering is wrong.
  4. Bind each control manually and save the profile. Restart the emulator if it appears to have cached an old device.

The sticks act like buttons or do not move smoothly

Check the controller test screen on the computer before changing emulator mappings. If the axes do not move there, the app may be in a D-pad or keyboard layout, the virtual device may not expose analog axes, or its settings may be wrong. If axes work in the operating system but not in the emulator, check the emulator’s selected device and dead-zone or axis settings.

Input feels delayed or the phone disconnects

For a virtual-gamepad app, try a local Wi-Fi connection rather than routing over the internet, move to a less congested network, or use USB if supported. Keep the phone awake and remove battery-saver restrictions for the app. For streaming, reduce resolution or bitrate, use Ethernet for the host where practical, and test on a strong local network before attempting remote play. Actual responsiveness depends on the phone, PC, app, network, and emulator; none of these steps guarantees zero delay.

Keep the app in the foreground, charge the phone, consider Do Not Disturb, and prevent the screen from locking during play. Notifications, app switching, battery saving, and a weak connection can interrupt either setup.

Can I connect several phones for local multiplayer?

Possibly, but do not assume each phone will become a clean, separate player. The computer may assign virtual devices unpredictably, merge inputs, or conflict with a physical controller. Test one phone first, then connect additional phones one at a time and assign each in the emulator. Multiple connections offered by an app do not by themselves guarantee multiplayer support.

Is a phone a good controller?

It is useful as a temporary or spare controller, especially when you already own the phone and only need basic buttons. Touch layouts are customizable, and some apps can use motion sensors. A phone can also combine the screen and controls when streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For extended play, a physical controller is usually more comfortable and precise. Touch buttons have no tactile feedback, sticks do not have physical travel, and it is easy to press the wrong area without looking. Battery drain, heat, screen locking, notifications, and network delay can also get in the way. A conventional Bluetooth or USB controller is a better fit for regular play, precise analog movement, or reliable multiplayer; console-specific motion or dual-screen games may need still more specialized input.
