Yes—usually. You can stay in a Discord voice call while using a game’s built-in proximity chat, because they are separate voice systems. The game must support proximity chat, and your microphone, headset, and platform settings must let both systems work together.
What using both actually means
Discord is typically a private, ongoing group call. In-game proximity chat is tied to the game: nearby players may hear you, and you may hear them, depending on distance and the game’s rules. With both enabled, your Discord friends can coordinate privately while you interact with people in the game world.
That does not mean Discord automatically adds proximity voice to a game. A normal Discord voice channel is not distance-based or positioned in the game world. The game needs its own proximity-chat feature, or its developers must build a spatial-voice feature using Discord’s Social SDK. That SDK option is a game-development integration, not a setting players can switch on in Discord. Discord’s documentation explains how developers route voice to in-game 3D positions.
If you use Discord alone, you generally get a group call, not conversations limited to nearby players. Conversely, using both can mean overlapping voices—and, if both apps are listening to your microphone, the same speech may go to both channels.

Set up both on PC
- Open Discord and join the voice channel you want.
- In Discord, go to User Settings → Voice & Video. Select the microphone and headphones or headset you intend to use. Discord’s voice troubleshooting guide also recommends checking these input and output selections.
- Launch the game and enable its voice chat and proximity-chat options. Check whether the game has separate team, lobby, and proximity channels.
- Check the game’s voice input and output devices. They may use the same headset as Discord, but do not assume they will.
- Choose how each app should transmit. For example, use Discord voice activity or one push-to-talk key, and a different push-to-talk key for game chat.
- Test each channel separately: speak once with the game’s transmit control, then once with Discord’s. Check which group can hear you and whether you can hear both channels.
Using separate push-to-talk controls helps prevent one button press from broadcasting to both audiences. Keep Discord mute and the game’s mute controls separate as well; their labels and available options vary by game.
Optional: Discord overlay
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Discord’s Game Overlay can show voice controls while you play. Enable it under User Settings → Overlay, then use the configured overlay keybind; Discord documents Shift + ` as the default. If it does not display correctly, try windowed or borderless mode. The overlay is not documented as supported on macOS or Linux, and you can disable it for a particular game if it causes performance or stability problems. See Discord’s Game Overlay guide.

Use Discord voice on PS5 or Xbox
Console Discord voice uses platform integrations rather than the same desktop-app workflow. The console steps below get you into Discord; they do not guarantee that every game, headset, or audio-routing setup will let you hear both Discord and proximity chat as desired.
PS5
- Link your Discord and PlayStation Network accounts.
- On PS5, press the PlayStation button to open Control Center, then open Game Base.
- Select the Discord tab, choose a server and voice channel, and join.
- Check the game’s own voice-chat settings and confirm the headset’s game/chat balance is not hiding game voice.
Discord voice is transferred to PS5 through this integration; Discord does not provide a standalone PlayStation app. Discord says the console needs current system software for the feature. See the PlayStation connection FAQ.

Xbox
- Link your Discord and Xbox accounts.
- Press the Xbox button and open Parties & chats → Discord Voice.
- Choose a server and voice channel, then join. You can also transfer Discord voice from the Discord mobile app through the Xbox app.
- Check the game’s voice settings and your headset’s chat balance.
Discord recommends updating the console to the latest system software. See the Xbox connection FAQ. On either console, compatibility still depends on the game’s voice implementation, console routing, account restrictions, and headset setup.
Keep private and in-game conversations separate
Muting Discord normally affects Discord, not the game; muting or disabling game chat normally affects the game, not Discord. A hardware mute button or shared audio-routing software can affect more than one app, so test your specific setup.

- Friends should not hear your proximity conversations: mute Discord while speaking in-game, or use Discord push-to-talk and transmit only when addressing your group.
- Nearby players should not hear private strategy: mute the game microphone or avoid pressing its transmit control while talking on Discord.
- You want friends to hear everything: leave Discord listening while you use game chat, but be aware that the same microphone speech may be sent to both channels.
- You cannot hear Discord during an encounter: deafen Discord temporarily. Deafen stops Discord audio reaching you; it is not the same as muting your game.
Nearby players may hear you even when you think you are addressing only your friends, and Discord friends may hear game-world conversations if Discord is listening to your microphone. Voice moderation and privacy rules may differ between the game and Discord, so check each service’s settings and policies.
Fix echo, duplicated voices, or missing proximity audio
If you hear an echo or duplicate speech
- Use headphones instead of speakers, and lower microphone monitoring or sidetone if it is too loud.
- In Discord and the game, select the physical headset microphone—not a “Stereo Mix,” monitor-output, or virtual loopback device.
- Reduce microphone sensitivity or use push-to-talk.
- Check for another open microphone nearby, especially if someone else in the room is also on voice chat.
- If streaming or recording, check whether the capture setup is feeding game or Discord audio back into the microphone.
If you cannot hear nearby players
- Confirm that the game’s voice chat and proximity chat are enabled, and that you are within another player’s voice range.
- Check the game’s voice output device and voice-volume setting. Some games route voice separately from other game audio.
- Check your headset’s game/chat balance. Temporarily deafen Discord to see whether its call is masking game voices.
- Confirm the game has not muted the lobby or disabled voice receive, and restart its voice session if possible.
- Test the game without Discord. If proximity chat works then, recheck device selection, console routing, drivers, or headset software.
If other players cannot hear you
- Check the game’s selected microphone, in-game mute state, and push-to-talk key.
- Test the microphone in Discord, then verify operating-system microphone permissions on PC or the headset/controller mute state on console.
- Close apps that may be using or rerouting the microphone, and check headset utilities or virtual mixers.
- Update and restart the game, Discord, console, audio drivers, or headset firmware as appropriate.
If Discord voice itself will not connect, also check that your Discord client is current. Discord’s minimum-client requirements state that voice and video conversations require support for its newer end-to-end encryption system starting March 2, 2026; older clients may be unable to join calls.
Choose a setup for your goal

If the game does not support proximity chat, joining Discord cannot create it. If the game has separate team and proximity channels, configure them independently. In either case, the result can differ by game edition and platform.
