Short answer: an original Wii Remote usually will not work by pairing it in your phone’s ordinary Bluetooth settings. On Android, the most practical route for Dolphin is a DolphinBar-style intermediary such as the Mayflash W010 connected over USB-OTG; compatibility depends on the device, adapter mode and Dolphin build. On iPhone and iPad, there is no straightforward, broadly supported plug-and-play method for a physical Wii Remote. A modern Bluetooth controller or a virtual-controller app such as WiiMoteDSU is generally more realistic.
First decide what “use a Wii Remote” means
These are different projects:
- Playing Wii or GameCube games in Dolphin on a phone or tablet.
- Using the Remote as an ordinary Android gamepad.
- Using its infrared pointer for aiming.
- Using the phone itself as a virtual Wii Remote.
- Using a phone as the display while retaining an actual physical Remote.
The advice below focuses on the first and most common goal: using an original Wii Remote, optionally with a Nunchuk, for emulation.
What the hardware actually provides
A Wii Remote (including Wii Remote Plus models) sends button, motion, rumble and speaker data over Bluetooth. A Nunchuk adds an analog stick and additional motion controls; a Classic Controller can add a conventional button layout. Pointer aiming is different: the Remote’s camera tracks two infrared reference points. Bluetooth alone cannot create that pointer. You need two infrared light sources near the screen, normally supplied by a Wii sensor bar or a DolphinBar.

Common original models include RVL-CNT-01 and RVL-CNT-01-TR. Some Plus/TR units and third-party remotes have model-specific compatibility issues; Dolphin maintains separate guidance for TR hardware (Dolphin’s TR connection guide).

Why ordinary Bluetooth pairing usually fails
The Remote contains Bluetooth hardware, but it does not behave like a current Xbox, PlayStation or generic Android HID controller. A phone may list it during a scan and still fail to complete pairing because the operating system expects a conventional pairing and input profile. PINs such as 0000 or 1234 are not a dependable fix.
Dolphin’s desktop instructions specifically tell users not to pair a Wii Remote through the operating system’s normal Bluetooth page. Dolphin should manage discovery from its controller settings instead (official controller guide). Therefore, “press 1 and 2, tap the Remote in Android Bluetooth settings, and Dolphin will find it” is not a reliable current Android procedure.
Android: the realistic DolphinBar method
Android Dolphin is available, but current Dolphin progress reporting says direct Android Wii Remote connection has been prohibited for some time. A USB intermediary can provide a more practical workaround, although this is a compatibility-dependent setup rather than a universal, Android-certified workflow.

What you need
- An Android phone or tablet powerful enough to run your chosen Dolphin games.
- A current Dolphin Android build from an appropriate source (Dolphin FAQ).
- An authentic Wii Remote, preferably tested, plus a Nunchuk if the game needs one.
- A Mayflash W010 DolphinBar or comparable intermediary.
- A data-capable USB-C OTG adapter, dock or powered hub. Some phones cannot supply enough power to the bar, especially while driving HDMI.
- Infrared-light placement near the display for games that use pointing.
- Game images legally dumped from discs you own.
Mayflash lists the W010 as a Windows-PC product. Its manufacturer documents Wii Remote accessories, Dolphin compatibility and up to four remotes for that stated use; Android operation should therefore be treated as device- and build-dependent, not guaranteed (W010 specifications).
Connection procedure
- Connect the W010 to the Android device through a USB-C OTG adapter or dock. Use a powered hub if Android reports insufficient power or the bar repeatedly disconnects.
- Set the W010 to its Wii Remote controller emulator mode. Its other modes are keyboard/mouse, keyboard/mouse game and game-controller modes; those are not equivalent to a Wii Remote backend.
- Press the bar’s sync button, then press 1 + 2 together on the Remote. If that fails, try the Remote’s red sync button and repeat. Remove batteries briefly and retry if discovery remains stuck.
- Open Dolphin’s controller settings and choose the Wii Remote mode exposed by your build and adapter. Labels such as Real Wii Remote, Emulated Wii Remote, Bluetooth passthrough and Emulate the Wii’s Bluetooth adapter describe different backends; do not assume they are interchangeable.
- Test buttons, Nunchuk stick/buttons, motion, rumble and pointer separately before launching a game.
- Create per-game profiles where necessary. Wii titles may expect a sideways Remote, Remote plus Nunchuk, Classic Controller, shaking, pointing or MotionPlus; one universal mapping is rarely ideal. Dolphin has discussed this per-game control rationale in its Bluetooth passthrough documentation.
Pointer setup
Place the DolphinBar above or below the display with its infrared LEDs facing the front of the Remote. The phone’s screen does not act as a sensor bar. Keep the bar powered and reduce competing infrared sources. If the Remote’s pointer camera cannot see both LED points, aiming will not work even when buttons and motion do.
W010 firmware and used-hardware warning
Mayflash lists V09 firmware that changes infrared LED behavior when a Remote disconnects. The update requires a Windows computer, and Mayflash warns that the current firmware applies to the newer two-switch revision, not the older one-switch hardware (V09 notice). A second-hand bar may therefore be impossible to update from Android and may not match current instructions.

Android troubleshooting by symptom

Android USB-host behavior, permissions and power limits vary by manufacturer. A setup that works on one tablet is not proof that every phone will work.
iPhone and iPad: practical alternatives
There is no equivalent, broadly supported plug-and-play route verified here for pairing a physical Wii Remote with native iOS or iPadOS games. Avoid treating a W010 as an iPhone accessory. Unofficial, sideloaded or experimental approaches may exist, but they are not a dependable recommendation for most readers.
Use the phone as a virtual Wii Remote
WiiMoteDSU makes the phone act as a Wii Remote-style input device; it does not pair an original Remote with iOS. Its documented Dolphin workflow is:

This is useful when Dolphin runs on a computer or another network-accessible host and touchscreen/sensor input is acceptable. It does not provide original Remote ergonomics, Nunchuk hardware or infrared pointer aiming.
Use a modern controller
An Xbox, PlayStation, Switch-compatible or MFi Bluetooth controller is normally the lowest-friction choice for iPhone, iPad and ordinary Android gaming. It pairs through the operating system and works with supported mobile games, but it will not reproduce every Wii motion or pointer behavior.
Windows, Linux and macOS
Desktop Dolphin is the better-supported environment. Open controller configuration, set the Wii Remote slot to Real Wii Remote, use Dolphin’s refresh/scanning process, then press 1 + 2 (or the applicable sync button). Do not first pair through the operating system’s Bluetooth panel, and turn off nearby consoles if discovery is unreliable. Dolphin documents support for up to four real remotes and attached accessories in its desktop workflow.

Dolphin’s 2025 progress report describes Linux as generally more successful for direct connection, Windows as inconsistent, macOS as troublesome with some pairing behavior, and Android direct connection as prohibited (release 2509 report). A DolphinBar can simplify some desktop setups, but its official product specification remains Windows-focused.

Bottom line
For Android, buy or use a DolphinBar only when you specifically want authentic Wii Remote motion or pointer controls and are prepared to test OTG power, adapter mode and Dolphin compatibility. For iPhone and iPad, choose WiiMoteDSU if a virtual controller is acceptable, or use a modern Bluetooth controller. If you want the fewest surprises, a standard controller—or the original Wii console—beats forcing a Wii Remote into a phone’s normal Bluetooth workflow.

Can I pair a Wii Remote with Android using PIN 0000?

Its infrared LEDs can provide the reference points needed for pointer aiming, but the bar still needs USB power and must be positioned where the Remote can see it.
Will every Wii game work with one Wii Remote profile?
No. Games differ in sideways Remote, Nunchuk, Classic Controller, pointing, shaking and MotionPlus requirements; per-game profiles are often necessary.
