Can You Use a Switch SD Card on Anything Else?

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—usually. The Nintendo Switch uses a standard microSD card that can often be reused in a computer, phone, tablet, camera or handheld PC. However, downloaded Switch games, updates and DLC are not portable game files, and save data is stored in the console’s internal memory. Formatting the card for another device erases its contents.

First, it is a microSD card

“Switch SD card” normally means a microSD card. The original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED have microSD slots; a full-size SD card needs a passive microSD-to-SD adapter, while a miniSD card does not fit. Nintendo lists support for microSD cards up to 2 GB, microSDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and microSDXC cards from 64 GB to 2 TB. It recommends UHS-I cards with approximately 60–95 MB/s transfer speeds or higher. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.

A Nintendo-themed or licensed card is still a standard microSD card. The branding does not lock it to Nintendo, although the receiving device must support its capacity, card standard and file system.

What is actually on the card?

Content Can another device use it? What to expect
Screenshots and captured videos Often, yes They may be copied to a computer or imported by another device, provided its reader and file system are compatible.
Downloaded games, updates and DLC No, not as ordinary files Nintendo-managed software data is not a portable PC, phone or other-console installation.
Game saves Not from the card Nintendo says save data is stored in the Switch’s internal system memory, not on the microSD card.
Nintendo folders Do not modify casually Files may be visible without being meaningful or launchable on another platform.

Seeing folders on a computer does not mean the software inside can be opened elsewhere. If you still need the card for that Switch, leave the Nintendo data intact.

SANDISK 256GB microSD Card, Super Mario Super Star Edition
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

Using it with a PC or Mac

A computer can normally read the card through a built-in SD slot and microSD adapter, or a USB microSD reader.

  1. Shut down the Switch completely before removing the card.
  2. Insert it into the reader and copy wanted screenshots and videos.
  3. Open several copied files to verify the backup.
  4. Do not format the card merely because the Nintendo folders look unfamiliar.
  5. If you no longer need the Switch data, format the card for its new use.

Nintendo’s official migration procedure uses a Windows PC and advises copying the entire card when moving to another card. Nintendo warns that the process may not copy correctly in environments other than Windows, such as Mac. Do not erase or alter the original until the replacement has been tested; follow Nintendo’s transfer instructions.

Using it in an Android phone or tablet

It can work if the device has a physical microSD slot and supports the card’s capacity, partition layout and file system. FAT32 is widely supported, while exFAT support varies by manufacturer and model. Xiaomi, for example, says FAT32 is supported and that many devices running Android 6.0 or later support exFAT, while NTFS may not be recognized; this is not a universal Android specification. See Xiaomi’s file-system guidance.

SANDISK 128GB Ultra microSD UHS-I Card - Up to 195MB/s Read Speed, Full HD Video, V10, U1, C10, A5 - SDSQUJQ-128G-GZ6MA
  • EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
  • SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
  • MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
  • LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

If Android offers to format the card as portable storage, that process erases the Switch contents. Choosing adoptable or internal storage, where offered, can encrypt and tie the card to that phone, reducing portability. Back up media before accepting either option.

Using it with an iPhone or iPad

Most iPhones and iPads do not have a built-in microSD slot. Use a reader or adapter that matches the device connector—Lightning on older models or USB-C on newer ones.

Apple lists APFS, HFS+, exFAT, FAT32 and FAT as supported external-storage formats, and requires a single data partition. If the card is already in a supported format, you may be able to browse and copy media without reformatting. iPhone does not normally turn a microSD card into internal storage. Apple’s instructions are at Apple Support.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Using it in a camera, drone or action camera

Compatibility is model-specific. Check the device’s maximum capacity, microSDHC versus microSDXC support, UHS and video-speed ratings, and FAT32 or exFAT requirements. Some cameras require in-camera formatting.

A card that works in a Switch can still fail in a camera because of capacity or file-system limits. SanDisk notes that FAT32 is common on older phones, cameras and devices without exFAT support, while 64 GB and larger cards are commonly exFAT; see SanDisk’s format guidance. Copy and verify any Switch media before allowing the camera to format the card.

Using it in a Steam Deck or other handheld PC

A handheld PC that supports microSDXC can generally use the card as removable storage after formatting it in a file system supported by its operating system. Switch-installed games do not become playable PC games simply because the card is inserted. If the card will become dedicated PC-game or media storage, a clean format is usually the least troublesome option—after backup.

Moving it between original Switch consoles

Do not treat the card as a universal game cartridge. Nintendo recommends one microSD card per system; software downloaded for one Switch will not become playable on another merely through insertion.

For a same-system upgrade, use Nintendo’s formal two-card migration with a Windows PC:

  • Copy the complete contents, not selected Nintendo folders.
  • Do not delete, format or alter the original card.
  • Verify the replacement card works before discarding or changing the original.
  • Expect software to remain associated with the purchasing Nintendo Account and, where necessary, to be redownloaded.

Switch 2 changes the answer

Nintendo Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards for game storage. A regular microSD card from an original Switch cannot save or load Switch 2 digital games or save data. It can still provide access to captured Switch screenshots and videos. Nintendo lists microSD Express support up to 2 TB and says first use requires an internet system update. Read the current Switch 2 compatibility information.

A microSD Express card can be inserted into an original Switch, but that console uses it at ordinary microSD-level speeds rather than Express performance.

How to reuse the card safely

  1. Decide whether the card is still needed for the original Switch library.
  2. Shut down the console and remove the card.
  3. Copy screenshots and videos to a computer or other safe location.
  4. Open the copies and verify that they work.
  5. Check the destination device’s capacity, file-system and partition requirements.
  6. Format the card in the destination device when possible.
  7. Test both reading and writing before relying on it.

Nintendo warns that formatting cannot be undone and recommends backing up screenshots and videos first. Its formatting guidance explains the risk.

When a new card is the better choice

  • You still need the existing card for a large Switch library.
  • The destination requires a different format but you want to preserve Nintendo data.
  • The card shows corruption warnings or intermittent read errors.
  • The new device requires microSD Express, as Switch 2 does for game storage.
  • The reader or host has an uncertain capacity limit.

For original Switch models, Nintendo’s supported card classes and speed guidance matter more than a Nintendo license. For Switch 2 game storage, the decisive requirement is microSD Express.

The Bottom Line

Reuse a Switch microSD card when the new device supports it and you have backed up anything important. Keep it intact if you still need the Switch library, and never format it until you accept that its existing contents will be erased.
