Short answer: you should not secretly track your boyfriend’s phone. Hidden monitoring may involve stalkerware, unauthorized account access, or a concealed Bluetooth tracker. It can expose private messages, accounts, photos, microphone access, and camera access—not just location—and may create criminal or civil liability depending on the facts and your jurisdiction.
If you need location information for safety, travel, or emergencies, use transparent location sharing with informed, voluntary consent. If you believe someone is in danger, contact emergency services or request a welfare check rather than compromising their phone.

What “tracking a phone” can mean
“Tracking his phone” can describe several very different technologies. They do not have the same privacy, legal, or safety implications.

- Consent-based location sharing: Your partner knowingly shares a location through Apple Find My, Google Maps, or another mutually configured service. Access can usually be reviewed, limited, or revoked.
- Account-based tracking: Someone gains access to an Apple Account, Google Account, family group, or recovery channel. A shared phone plan, marriage, or paying the bill does not automatically authorize access to another adult’s private account or device.
- Stalkerware: Secretly installed software may expose location, calls, texts, email, photos, browsing activity, microphone input, or camera access. The FTC describes these capabilities and the risks of stalkerware.
- Hidden Bluetooth trackers: An AirTag, Find Hub-compatible tag, or similar device can be placed in a bag, vehicle, clothing, or other property. This follows the tag’s movements; it does not directly hack the phone.
- Data-broker services: Some location information is collected through apps and sold or shared commercially. The FTC has taken enforcement action over the use and sale of precise location data without adequate consent.
These methods are not interchangeable. A location pin may represent the phone or a Bluetooth tag, not the person carrying it. It may also be stale or approximate because of battery level, signal, permissions, or app settings.
Why covert tracking is risky
It can expose far more than location
Many products marketed as “secret phone trackers” are not limited to a map. They may request access to messages, contacts, photos, browser history, microphones, cameras, or account credentials. A product’s availability in an app store or on a website does not make hidden surveillance safe or lawful.
The FTC’s action against SpyFone illustrates the risks of businesses selling tools designed for secret surveillance. Avoid services that promise invisible monitoring, password bypasses, hidden installation, or guaranteed access to another person’s phone.

It may violate laws
There is no single rule that answers every U.S. case. The outcome can depend on your state or country, who owns the phone, whether you had permission, whether the parties share property, and whether the conduct involves unauthorized computer access, interception of communications, stalking, harassment, fraud, threats, or coercive control.

Do not rely on claims that tracking is automatically legal because you pay the phone bill, share a plan, are married, or own the vehicle. Secret tracking may expose you to criminal or civil liability. For advice about a specific situation, consult a qualified lawyer or local legal-aid organization.
It can escalate an unsafe relationship
If jealousy, threats, coercion, or domestic abuse are involved, secretly installing software or hiding a tracker can increase danger for everyone. It can also create evidence that is difficult to interpret and may worsen an already volatile situation.
Safer ways to share location
If the goal is coordination or safety, ask for a transparent arrangement instead:
- Agree on the purpose. Examples include a late-night trip, travel day, childcare handoff, or emergency response.
- Use a defined time period. Temporary sharing is often better than indefinite access.
- Make the viewer list clear. Everyone should know who can see the location and whether location history is retained.
- Keep consent voluntary. Consent should be informed, specific, freely given, and revocable—not obtained through threats, deception, financial control, or control of housing.
- Choose a mutually configured service. Apple Find My and Google Maps can support transparent sharing. Cross-platform families may also consider a reputable family-safety service, provided every participant understands the data collected and the people who can access it.
Review whether the service shows an exact or approximate location, stores location history, offers an emergency or check-in function, works across both phone platforms, and gives each participant a clear way to stop sharing. Consent improves legitimacy, but it does not eliminate account-security or data-collection risks.

What not to do
- Do not guess, steal, or reset another person’s password.
- Do not install a hidden monitoring app or use a jailbreak or root exploit on someone else’s phone.
- Do not hide an AirTag, GPS device, or other tracker in a vehicle, bag, or clothing.
- Do not treat a shared wireless plan as permission to access private data.
- Do not trust “free phone tracker” websites that request credentials, payment details, or installation of unknown software.
- Do not use a phone-tracking method to investigate an emergency when a welfare check or emergency call is available.
Google’s Find Hub acceptable-use policy prohibits using a tracker to identify a person’s presence or obtain information about them without their knowledge and consent, and warns that stalking may be a crime.
If you are worried that your own phone is being tracked
Signs can include physical access by another person, unusual battery drain or data use, unexpected settings changes, or someone knowing unusually specific details about your activities. None of these proves surveillance by itself. A phone that has not been rooted or jailbroken can still be exposed through compromised accounts.

If confronting the suspected person could trigger retaliation, do not confront them immediately. The FTC warns that removing stalkerware or researching it on a monitored phone can alert an abusive partner.

- Use a trusted person’s phone, a public computer, or another device to seek help and change sensitive credentials.
- Preserve screenshots, alerts, account notifications, and other evidence before deleting apps, resetting the phone, or disabling a tracker.
- If there is immediate danger, move to a public place and contact emergency services or someone you trust.
- Consider contacting a domestic-violence or technology-safety advocate before making major changes.
Check for unknown Bluetooth trackers on Android
Google says Android 6 and later can identify certain unknown trackers moving with you. Exact labels can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Tap the tracker notification.
- Review the map showing where the tracker was detected.
- Tap Play sound to help locate it. Google says playing the sound does not notify the owner.
- Follow Next steps after finding the device.
- Save identifying information and screenshots if doing so is safe.
- If you feel unsafe, go to a public location and contact law enforcement or a trusted person.
- Turn off the tracker according to the manufacturer’s instructions when appropriate.
Previous alerts may be available under Settings → Safety & Emergency → Unknown tracker alerts; Google states that alerts are deleted after 48 hours. See Google’s current Android unknown-tracker guidance.
Android alerts may cover Find Hub-compatible tags, headphones, and Apple AirTags, but they do not detect every GPS device, spyware package, or unauthorized account login.

Apple and Google announced cross-platform unwanted-tracker alerts in 2024. Apple introduced the capability in iOS 17.5, while Google launched it for Android 6.0 and later. Depending on the platform, alerts may use wording such as “[Item] Found Moving With You” or “Tracker traveling with you.”

These alerts are designed for supported Bluetooth trackers. They are not proof of who placed a device, why it was placed, or whether your accounts or phone software are compromised. They also do not guarantee detection of every tracker. Details are documented in Apple and Google’s cross-platform announcement.
Responding to suspected stalkerware
Do not assume that deleting one suspicious app solves the problem. Depending on the safety situation, consider professional help, evidence preservation, account security, and a clean-device plan.
- Change important passwords from a safer device and enable multifactor authentication.
- Review account sign-ins, recovery email addresses, trusted devices, and location-sharing permissions.
- Ask a qualified advocate or technician about whether the phone has been rooted or jailbroken.
- Consider a new phone or factory reset only after weighing safety and evidence concerns.
- If you reset the phone, avoid restoring an old backup if it could reinstall the monitoring software.
A factory reset may remove some software, but it is not a guaranteed solution for account compromise or a physical tracker. Turning off Bluetooth, location services, or Airplane Mode may not stop a separate Bluetooth tracker from being located; the physical tracker generally must be disabled according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If you think your boyfriend is missing or in danger
Do not attempt to break into his accounts or secretly install tracking software. Call emergency services when there is an immediate threat, request a welfare check through local authorities, contact people who may be nearby, or use an existing location-sharing arrangement that he knowingly enabled. A phone’s location is not conclusive proof of a person’s location or safety.
The bottom line
There is no responsible, dependable consumer method for secretly tracking an adult partner’s phone. Hidden surveillance can expose sensitive information, introduce malware and account risks, escalate an unsafe relationship, and potentially violate criminal or civil law. Use temporary, transparent location sharing or agreed check-ins instead. If you fear that your phone is being monitored, plan for safety first, preserve evidence, and seek help before removing anything.
