Short answer: When iOS 16 was in testing, you could install its public beta without paying for Apple Developer Program membership. You needed an Apple Account and enrollment in Apple’s free Apple Beta Software Program. However, iOS 16 beta is no longer available for new enrollment in 2026. The steps below document the legitimate historical process and explain what to do instead.
Availability notice: iOS 16 beta is a historical program. Do not expect Apple’s current beta website or Software Update screen to offer a new iOS 16 beta.

What “iOS Beta 16” means
The usual name is iOS 16 beta. Apple offered two separate testing channels:

- Developer Beta: Intended for app developers testing compatibility and APIs.
A free Apple Account was not the same as a paid Apple Developer Program membership. Public-beta access did not require the paid membership. A configuration profile obtained from an unofficial website was also not equivalent to Apple enrollment.

Which iPhones were compatible with iOS 16?
This is the historical iOS 16 compatibility list, not a statement about current iOS support. iOS 16 supported iPhone 8 and later, including the second-generation iPhone SE and newer models. It dropped the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and first-generation iPhone SE. The compatibility list was reported during the beta period by MacRumors.
Before installing any beta
- Make an encrypted computer backup where practical, and an iCloud backup as an additional safeguard.
- Use a spare or non-production iPhone if possible. Apple warns that beta software can contain errors and recommends avoiding business-critical devices (Apple Beta Software Program FAQ).
- Check storage, charge the phone, and have reliable Wi-Fi available.
- Confirm that banking, authentication, work and other essential apps can tolerate pre-release software.
- Keep a recovery plan. A backup made on a newer beta may not restore to an older public iOS release.

- Open beta.apple.com in Safari on the iPhone.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used on the phone and enroll in the public beta program.
- Download Apple’s iOS beta configuration profile from the enrollment flow.
- Open the downloaded profile. iOS commonly showed a Profile Downloaded prompt. If it did not, check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
- Install the profile and restart the iPhone if requested.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install, then follow the passcode and restart prompts.
- Leave the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi while it downloads and installs.

iOS 16.4 and later: Beta Updates
Apple changed the normal enrollment flow for later releases. After joining the appropriate public-beta channel:
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Choose Public Beta.
- Return to Software Update and install the offered build.
Do not apply the old profile instructions to every iOS 16 release. Apple separates devices running iOS 16.4 or later from those on iOS 16.3 or earlier in its installation documentation.

What you would see after enrollment
Depending on the release, enrollment could produce a Profile Downloaded notification, a Beta Updates menu, or a beta listed under Settings > General > Software Update. Installation normally involved a download, restart, Apple logo and progress bar.
If no beta appeared
- Confirm that the iPhone model was compatible with iOS 16.
- Use the same Apple Account on the iPhone and at the beta enrollment site.
- Check available storage, Wi-Fi and power.
- For the older workflow, look in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for the profile and remove conflicting profiles.
- Check whether the requested build had expired or was no longer distributed.
- Remember that iOS 16 beta distribution ended; in 2026 this is usually the decisive explanation.
If Beta Updates is missing, the phone may not be enrolled in an active channel, may be running software from before that interface, may be controlled by a management profile, or may simply be outside the requested beta program.
How to stop receiving beta updates
iOS 16.4 and later
Use Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Off.

iOS 16.3.1 and earlier
Use Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > iOS & iPadOS Beta Software Profile > Remove Profile. Apple’s instructions are at support.apple.com/en-lamr/108763.
Turning beta updates off or removing the profile stops future beta updates; it does not by itself immediately downgrade the installed system.
Returning to a stable iOS release
Apple generally requires an erase and restore to remove a beta immediately and install the currently released public version. Restoring erases the iPhone, so use a backup made before the beta whenever possible. A beta-created backup may not be compatible with an older public release. Recovery steps vary by iPhone model. If the phone is unusable, Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows can update or restore it; recovery mode may be required, and choosing Restore erases the device.
Why unofficial developer profiles and IPSW mirrors are a bad workaround
Random “developer beta” profiles are not a legitimate substitute for Apple’s public program. They can be revoked, redirect enrollment, expose device-management controls, or deliver software from an untrusted source. Do not install one merely to force a missing Beta Updates menu.
An IPSW restore image is not a general bypass for developer access. Apple’s Xcode documentation describes beta restore images as intended for registered development devices and explains that Finder installation uses Option-click on Restore (Apple Xcode documentation). Unknown IPSW files may be modified, meant for another model, expired or unsigned. Apple also warns that installing an older image than the one currently installed will fail.

Public beta, developer beta or stable software?

TestFlight is relevant only if you want to test an app supplied by its developer, not the iPhone operating system.
What to do in 2026
If you want to test the current iOS beta, use Apple’s current public-beta enrollment for the current operating-system generation rather than searching for an iOS 16 profile. If you need iOS 16 for an old app or device, use a spare compatible iPhone, a legally obtained Apple-signed image when appropriate, and a complete backup and recovery plan. For ordinary use, install the latest stable iOS version supported by your device.
