No—not reliably. Snapchat says the person who posted a Story can check whether someone took a screenshot. If you view a Story, assume the poster may be able to see that screenshot activity; Snapchat does not promise that a screenshot can be taken invisibly.
What the person who posted the Story can see
To check a Story, its poster opens My Story and swipes up. Snapchat says this view shows who watched and whether a screenshot was taken. The screenshot indicator is a record of activity the poster can check; it is not a guarantee that the poster will notice it immediately.
There is a limit to the names shown: Snapchat says the viewer list displays up to 200 Snapchatters by name. After 200 views, the interface shows a count rather than additional viewer names. That does not change the practical advice: do not assume a screenshot is private just because you do not know whether the poster checked the viewer screen.

Screenshot, screen recording, and saving are different actions
A screenshot is not the only way Story content can be retained. Snapchat warns that viewers can screen record, and that someone can photograph a screen using another device. Those options do not make the content safe from being saved or shared; they are reasons to treat disappearing content as potentially permanent.
Snapchat’s Private Stories guidance says viewers can screenshot or screen record. Its safety guidance also warns that a recipient can take a picture of a Snap with another device. These warnings are about the ability to preserve content; they should not be read as a promise that every capture method triggers the same in-app indicator.

Snapchat separately says that saving a Snap in the app signals this to the person who posted it with a screenshot icon in read receipts. That describes an in-app save, not a way to make an off-app capture private. Details are in Snapchat’s guide to saving a Private or Shared Story.

There is no reliable workaround established by Snapchat’s support guidance. The official material does not say that airplane mode prevents a screenshot indicator, and it does not establish that third-party apps or other capture tools avoid notice. A trick that appears to work on one device, app version, or moment is not a dependable privacy guarantee.

Do not use an unverified method as permission to capture something the poster expects to remain private. Apart from the risk of being noticed, any image or recording can be retained or shared, including by photographing the screen externally. If you need a copy, the safer and more respectful option is to ask the person who posted it.
If you post Stories, control who can view them
Snapchat’s audience controls let you limit exposure before posting. Its guidance describes My Friends and Custom options, and notes that some accounts may also have Everyone. The available choices can vary by account.

- Open Snapchat’s Story audience settings and choose the audience you want, such as My Friends or Custom, if those choices are available to you.
- Review the audience before you post, especially when sharing something sensitive or identifying.
- Remember that Snapchat says the audience setting in effect when a Snap is posted persists for that Snap. Changing the setting afterward does not retroactively change the audience for a Story Snap already posted.

A restricted audience reduces who can view a Story, but it cannot prevent a viewer from preserving what they can see. For that reason, share only material you would be comfortable with someone saving or passing along.

Does the Story poster get an alert the instant I take a screenshot?
Snapchat’s help material establishes that the poster can check screenshot activity from the My Story viewer screen. It does not specify the timing of an alert or say that every poster receives a separate real-time notification.
Does the 200-viewer limit mean screenshots after the 200th view are untracked?
