Yes, but only if a replay or background-capture feature was already running before the moment happened. It keeps a rolling buffer of recent footage; save the buffer after the event to export it. If capture was off, a recorder cannot retrieve video from the past.
What “record the last 15 minutes” means
Normal screen recording starts when you press Record. Instant Replay or a replay buffer works differently: while enabled, it continuously captures recent video and overwrites older footage. When you press Save, it exports the footage currently in that buffer.
A 15-minute setting does not guarantee a 15-minute clip if the buffer has been running for less time. Closing the capture app can discard unsaved footage, and a crash or capture failure may prevent the save from completing.
Choose a method

Set up a 15-minute replay
NVIDIA App
- Open the NVIDIA App and open its in-game overlay, commonly with
Alt+Z. - Open the overlay’s settings or capture settings and enable Instant Replay.
- Set the replay length to at least 15 minutes if that duration is available in your installed version. NVIDIA documentation describes saving recent footage and an older guide describes a 20-minute capability; current app limits and labels may differ. See NVIDIA’s Instant Replay guide.
- For desktop activity rather than a supported game, enable desktop capture if the option is available. NVIDIA says its app can capture windowed and borderless games and the desktop, with some OpenGL, Java, and web-based content supported; see NVIDIA’s capture support page.
- Leave replay running while you work or play. After the event, use the overlay’s displayed Save Instant Replay shortcut and check the configured capture folder.
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and find its recording or media settings.
- Enable Instant Replay and set the duration to 15 minutes. AMD documents adjustable replay durations up to 20 minutes; menus can vary by release. See AMD’s Instant Replay FAQ.
- If you need the desktop rather than gameplay, enable Record Desktop where available. Confirm the media save location and the configured save-replay hotkey in the recording settings. AMD describes these settings in its Adrenalin recording guidance.
- Start the activity with Instant Replay active. Press the configured save hotkey after the event, then check the media folder.
OBS Studio Replay Buffer
OBS is a good fit when you need precise control over what appears in the clip. Its current Windows release supports Windows 10 and 11; get it from the official OBS download page.

- Add a source in the scene: Game Capture for a game, Window Capture for an application, or Display Capture for a monitor. Add audio, webcam, or capture-card sources only if you need them.
- Open Settings > Output, enable Replay Buffer, and set its duration to 900 seconds for 15 minutes.
- Choose the recording path and an encoder. A hardware encoder such as NVENC, Quick Sync, or AMD hardware encoding may be available, depending on your PC.
- Open Settings > Hotkeys. Assign shortcuts to Start Replay Buffer and Save Replay Buffer.
- Start the Replay Buffer before the activity. After the event, press the save shortcut and look in the configured recording path.
OBS also supports the launch parameter --startreplaybuffer for starting the buffer when OBS launches; see OBS launch parameters. Test the shortcut arrangement after updates or changes to your source or capture settings. OBS’s overview of capture, audio, hotkeys, and Replay Buffer explains the available options.
Xbox Game Bar
Game Bar is convenient for ordinary recording: press Win+G to open it, Win+Alt+R to start or stop a recording, and Win+Alt+M to toggle the microphone during recording. Microsoft says recordings are MP4 files saved by default in VideosCaptures; see its Game Bar recording guidance.

For a clip of something that already happened, open Settings > Gaming > Captures and inspect the options on your Windows installation. Microsoft’s current Game Bar overview does not establish one 15-minute background-replay setting for every Windows 10 or 11 build. Older Xbox documentation described background recording and a short recent-clip shortcut, but that does not prove the same controls exist on every current PC; see the older Xbox guide. If you need a dependable 15-minute buffer, use a GPU replay feature or OBS and verify it with a test clip.
Can it capture the desktop, sound, and meetings?
It depends on the app, capture mode, and content. NVIDIA desktop capture, AMD’s Record Desktop option, and OBS display or window capture can cover activity beyond a game when configured. Protected video, DRM-protected applications, secure desktop elements, and some games or browsers may show a black screen or refuse capture; no single method is guaranteed to capture everything.

Check audio before relying on a replay. Game or application sound, system audio, microphone, and voice chat can be separate sources. In OBS, configure the intended desktop audio device and microphone under audio settings; other tools also have audio and microphone controls. Make a short test, play it back, and confirm that the right sound is present. A clip may contain video but omit the microphone or capture the wrong output device.
For meetings, calls, private messages, or other people’s voices and images, consider consent and applicable recording rules before enabling continuous capture.

Storage and performance to check
A longer buffer and higher capture quality take more resources. The main variables are duration, resolution, frame rate, bitrate or quality preset, codec, audio tracks, and the complexity of what is on screen. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work, but recording still uses system resources and disk space. OBS notes that 60 fps can be significantly more demanding than 30 fps in its capture guidance; AMD warns that gameplay videos can be large in its recording settings guidance.
Check that the destination drive has room, especially before using a high-quality 15-minute buffer. If a game slows down, reduce the replay duration first, then lower resolution or frame rate, reduce quality, simplify capture sources, or remove unneeded audio and webcam sources. Prefer an available hardware encoder and test the result before depending on it.

If the replay did not save
No clip appeared
- Confirm Instant Replay or the OBS Replay Buffer was active before the event; setting a duration alone does not start it.
- Check that the save shortcut works and is not being intercepted by another app. For OBS, verify that the buffer was started.
- Confirm the destination folder exists and has free space. NVIDIA, AMD, and OBS save locations are configurable, so check the app’s capture settings.
- Check that the correct game, window, or desktop is selected, and that a driver or app update has not reset the setting.
Black video, missing audio, or a short clip
- For a black capture, test an ordinary window, enable desktop capture where supported, or change the OBS source between Game Capture, Window Capture, and Display Capture. Borderless-windowed mode may help with some games. Protected content may remain unavailable.
- For missing sound, check the selected output and microphone devices, Windows per-app volume settings, and whether the microphone was enabled. Device changes, including Bluetooth audio switching, can affect capture.
- A clip shorter than 15 minutes may mean the buffer had not been running long enough, capture stopped or reset, the current application limit was lower, or storage or encoding failed.
If you did not have a replay buffer running, the past footage normally cannot be recovered. Start a normal recording now if the activity is still underway, then enable and test a replay method for next time.
