Yes—some games shared through Steam Families can be played offline. The game must be eligible for family sharing, installed on your device, and compatible with Steam Offline Mode. Before disconnecting, update it, launch it once while online, then choose Steam → Go Offline… Games that need an active connection, external launcher, or online sign-in may still fail.
Steam Families is the current family-library system, replacing the older Family Sharing and Family View arrangement. You may still see or search for the older “Steam Family Sharing” name. Check these conditions before relying on offline play
- The game appears in your Steam Family library.
- It is installed locally and fully updated.
- You have launched that exact game successfully while online.
- Steam can remember your account on this computer.
- The game does not require an online service or external launcher to start.
- You have switched Steam to Offline Mode and tested the game before losing internet access.
Library access and offline compatibility are separate checks: a game can be shareable but require the internet to launch, or be suitable for offline play but unavailable to your family because it is not shareable.
How to prepare a shared Steam game for Offline Mode
These instructions use the current Steam desktop client. Menu layouts can differ on other devices or change with client updates.

- Set up Steam Families while online. Confirm that you have joined the family and that the game appears in your library. Family games appear alongside your own; use Group By Library to distinguish them if needed. Steam Families can be managed through the Steam client, mobile device, or web browser. - Install and update the game. Connect to the internet, open Steam, and wait for the game files to finish updating. Offline Mode cannot download missing files or updates.
- Launch the game while online. Let it reach its main menu or another playable state, and complete any first-run setup or sign-in it requires. Then quit the game normally. Valve recommends this online launch to check for outstanding installation, update, and first-start requirements.
- Allow Steam to remember your login. At sign-in, select Remember me. In Steam’s settings, do not select Don’t save account credentials on this computer. This is about retaining the local login information needed to start Steam; it is not a reason to share your password.
- Switch Steam to Offline Mode. In the desktop client, select Steam → Go Offline… and follow the prompt.
- Test before you leave. Disconnect from the internet and try opening the game. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that every later update or game-service change will preserve offline access.
- Close Steam normally before shutting down. Valve advises against force-quitting Steam or abruptly powering off the computer, because Offline Mode depends on information stored locally.

What works offline—and what does not
Offline Mode lets you use games without an active connection to the Steam Network. A compatible installed game’s offline-capable content, such as single-player play, may work. The game itself determines what can be used; “single-player” alone does not guarantee that it can start without a connection.

Why a shared game might be unavailable or fail offline
The title is not eligible for family sharing
Steam excludes some games or content because of technical, licensing, regional, or publisher restrictions. Examples include games requiring a third-party product key, account, or subscription; free-to-play games and their DLC; region-restricted titles; games that do not support a family member’s operating system; publisher-disabled sharing; and games marked private by their owner. Older Family Sharing exclusions can also carry forward. A game appearing in the store or working for its owner does not establish that it is shareable.

The game relies on another service
A publisher launcher that must sign in, a separate account, always-online DRM, or an online service needed at startup can block play even when Steam itself is in Offline Mode. Requirements vary by title and can change, so test the specific shared game rather than assuming all games from a publisher behave alike.
It was not fully installed or initialized
An unfinished update, missing component, or incomplete first-run setup can prevent offline launch. Reconnect, update Steam and the game, complete the online launch and setup, quit normally, then retry Offline Mode.

Steam cannot use the saved login
If Steam asks you to sign in while disconnected, Valve says there is no offline bypass. Reconnect and sign in; prepare the saved-credentials setting before the next disconnection.

The available copy is in use
Steam Families allows family members to play different games from one another’s libraries, but simultaneous access to the same title depends on how many copies the family owns. If someone else is using the only available copy, it can appear locked. Offline Mode is not a way to bypass library availability or ownership checks.

- Family size: A Steam Family can have up to six members.
- Household checks: Steam may prevent someone from joining if the accounts do not appear to be in the same household. Leaving or changing a family, or a family slot being used, can also involve cooldowns. Valve describes Steam Families as a household feature and recommends inviting trusted household members.
- Copies and simultaneous play: Members can play different family-library titles at the same time. Multiple copies may be needed if multiple members want the same game at once.
- DLC: You receive a family member’s DLC only when the publisher allows that DLC to be shared. If the family has multiple copies with different DLC, switching between them can make saves work inconsistently. Stick to the same copy and DLC configuration when practical, and consider making a local save backup if the game supports it.

Troubleshoot in this order
- Does the title appear in your family library? If not, check family setup, sharing eligibility, region, operating-system support, private-game status, and publisher restrictions.
- Can it launch while you are online? If not, resolve the game or launcher problem first; Offline Mode will not fix a broken online launch.
- Are Steam and the game fully updated? If not, reconnect and finish updates before switching offline.
- Does it require an external launcher, third-party sign-in, subscription check, or active connection? If so, offline play may be impossible even after setup.
- Did you explicitly select Steam → Go Offline… and retain the login credentials? If not, prepare those settings while online and test again.
- Is another family member using the only copy? Treat a lock as a copy-availability issue, not as an Offline Mode fault.
If a game stops working after an update or family change, reconnect before travel, install updates, confirm the game is still available to you, and repeat the online launch test. Offline Mode delays updates, so a title that worked before a game or launcher update may need fresh online setup.
