There is no officially supported, documented way to install macOS Sequoia 15 as a VMware Workstation guest on a Windows PC. Unofficial guides attempt it by patching VMware and editing virtual-machine settings, but a VM that boots is not necessarily reliable, supported, or permitted by Apple’s license. If you need Xcode, Apple Account services, or dependable macOS access, use a Mac or a hosted Mac instead.
Why VMware Workstation on Windows does not offer a supported Sequoia installation
VMware Workstation is a Windows and Linux host product for running supported guest operating systems. VMware’s product information and FAQ do not establish macOS Sequoia as a supported guest on a Windows host (VMware Workstation and Fusion; VMware desktop-hypervisor FAQ).
Apple documents macOS virtualization through its Virtualization framework on Mac hardware. Its installation workflow uses a macOS restore image and Mac-specific virtual-machine configuration, including a hardware model, auxiliary storage, and machine identifier; it is not a guide to installing macOS in Workstation on Windows (Apple Virtualization; Apple’s macOS VM installation documentation).
That distinction matters: making “Apple Mac OS X” appear in VMware’s guest list through an unofficial patch does not add Apple’s virtual Mac platform, establish compatibility, or create official support.

Understand the licensing and security risks first
Apple’s license terms are tied to Apple-branded hardware, and its Developer Program License Agreement restricts installing or running macOS and Apple SDKs on non-Apple-branded computers. A conventional Windows PC is not Apple-branded hardware. These terms raise a substantial licensing issue for the proposed setup; they are not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion, so consult the applicable agreement and local law (Apple software license agreements, including macOS Sequoia; Apple Developer Program License Agreement).
There is also a security risk. An unlocker modifies VMware behavior; prebuilt VM images or unknown patch tools can include altered system files or malware, and may expose credentials. Do not treat a working technical workaround as authorization or as a safe source of installation media.
- Obtain macOS only through Apple’s official channels. Apple’s restore-image instructions apply to its documented Mac virtualization workflow; authentic Apple media does not make a Windows PC a supported Mac platform.
- Avoid torrents, preconfigured macOS VMs, and patch executables whose provenance, source code, signatures, and current compatibility have not been independently verified.
- Do not enter a primary Apple Account or sensitive credentials into an untrusted or unsupported VM.
Choose a route based on what you need macOS for
| Goal | Better-fit option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Run Xcode, sign Apple software, or use Apple services | A real Mac or hosted Mac | These tasks depend on Apple’s supported environment and services. |
| Test Safari or macOS browsers | A browser-testing service or hosted Mac | A Windows-hosted workaround adds setup and compatibility risks. |
| Explore the macOS interface | A real Mac or hosted Mac | Graphics, input, updates, and device behavior are more dependable. |
| Develop cross-platform software | Windows or Linux for general work, plus CI or hosted Mac access for Apple-specific builds | Keep routine development separate from the Apple-only build and test steps. |
| Run Windows or supported Linux guests | VMware Workstation | This is the product’s documented host use case; it does not solve the macOS licensing or support issue. |
Supported ways to use Sequoia virtually
Use a Mac you own
Install Sequoia on the Mac using Apple’s Software Update or official installer process. For a VM, follow Apple’s documented virtualization workflow on compatible Apple hardware, or use a virtualization product that supports macOS guests on a Mac. Apple’s documentation describes support across Apple Silicon and Intel Mac computers; check the requirements for the specific virtualization approach you choose.

Use a hosted or remote Mac
If you only have a Windows PC, a hosted Mac can provide access to genuine Mac hardware over a network. MacStadium offers hosted Mac infrastructure (MacStadium); MacinCloud offers remote Mac access with options that vary over time (MacinCloud). Compare current plans, permissions, storage, installed software, and intended personal or team use directly with the provider; pricing and availability are not stated here.
Buy a Mac for regular use
A Mac mini is a compact option for a dedicated Sequoia machine; check Apple’s current country-specific configurations and pricing (Apple Mac mini). Apple’s refurbished store may have eligible Macs, but inventory and prices vary by region and change frequently (Apple refurbished Macs).
What unofficial Windows guides generally do—and why that is not a recipe
Unofficial procedures typically install Workstation, apply an unlocker or patch, create a macOS-configured VM, attach an installer image, edit the VM’s .vmx file, and adjust firmware, CPU, graphics, storage, or networking settings before attempting installation. Some then add guest-integration tools and troubleshoot boot or device problems.

Those steps are version-sensitive and are not an endorsed installation procedure. “Unlock VMware” refers to changing VMware’s behavior so macOS appears as an option; it does not unlock Apple’s license, guarantee a successful boot, or confer VMware support. Old configuration snippets—including manually inserted SMC values—should not be copied as universal fixes. The right settings depend on the VMware release, Windows build, processor, installer format, boot method, and VM hardware version. No universal command sequence can safely cover those variables.
Hardware and Windows considerations
Broadcom’s published Workstation requirements include a 64-bit Intel or AMD host processor and hardware virtualization support such as Intel VT-x or AMD-V. These are baseline requirements for Workstation, not proof that Sequoia will run as a guest (Broadcom Workstation requirements).
For general VM workloads, 16 GB of host RAM and 80–120 GB of fast SSD space are practical recommendations, not Apple or VMware minimums for a Sequoia VM. Leave room for the host OS, VM updates, swap, and applications. Back up Windows and VM files before experimenting.

- Intel and AMD systems can behave differently because guest CPU features and boot configuration vary; no CPU family guarantees a successful Sequoia boot.
- Laptop firmware, integrated or discrete graphics, hybrid graphics, Windows security features, and the exact Workstation version can affect results. Hardware virtualization alone does not remove those compatibility issues.
- Apple’s macOS VM documentation focuses on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. An Apple Silicon Windows PC is not a straightforward substitute for a Mac in VMware Workstation.
- Hyper-V or virtualization-based security can affect how virtualization software operates. Do not disable Windows security features blindly; check VMware’s documentation for the exact host configuration before changing them.
VMware Workstation Pro is listed as free for personal use without a license key in current VMware/Broadcom information. Commercial, educational, and organizational use may have different terms, so verify the current license before using it in those settings (VMware desktop-hypervisor FAQ; Broadcom download and licensing information). That licensing does not make macOS-on-Windows a supported guest setup.

Reaching the macOS desktop is only one checkpoint. An unsupported VM may still have problems with networking, audio, display resizing, clipboard and file sharing, sleep and restart, USB devices, Software Update, App Store access, or Apple Account services. Xcode downloads, signing, iCloud, Messages, and FaceTime may also fail or behave unpredictably.
Some users have reported Apple Account login failures in Sequoia VMware VMs, including a report concerning macOS 15.7; that is anecdotal evidence, not proof of a universal Sequoia restriction (community report). If sign-in fails, do not assume repeated attempts or password changes will fix an unsupported environment, and avoid testing with a primary account.

Troubleshoot common unofficial-VM symptoms
“Apple Mac OS X” is missing from VMware
Workstation on Windows does not expose macOS as an ordinary supported guest type. Unofficial patches try to change that behavior, but they are version-sensitive and introduce security and support risks.
The installer will not boot
Possible causes include a damaged or unsuitable installer image, CPU-feature incompatibility, firmware mismatch, virtual hardware incompatibility, bootloader configuration, an outdated patch, or a host virtualization conflict. Because these setups have no universal configuration, identify the exact host CPU, Windows build, Workstation version, and installation method before changing settings.
Black screen, boot loop, or guest CPU panic
Graphics acceleration, guest-tool compatibility, insufficient resources, an incorrect firmware or CPU setting, or a bad .vmx edit can cause startup failures. If a problem starts after a change, revert that change or restore a known-good snapshot instead of adding more undocumented flags. “The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system” can indicate a guest panic or incompatible configuration; it is not a specific, universal fix.

Check that the virtual adapter is connected, Windows networking services are running, and NAT works in another VM. VPN or endpoint-security software can interfere with VMware networking. These checks may identify a host network problem, but cannot guarantee that an unsupported macOS guest will use its virtual adapter correctly.
An update breaks a previously working VM
Unofficial boot methods may rely on particular system files, virtual hardware identifiers, or bootloader behavior. Keep a backup and snapshot before attempting changes, and be prepared for an update to require rebuilding the VM. A snapshot is a recovery aid, not a substitute for a separate backup.
Make the choice that fits the work
If the goal is casual experimentation, understand that a patched Windows VM remains an unsupported, license-sensitive experiment and may stop working at any stage. If the goal involves Xcode, Apple services, signing, or dependable testing, use a real or hosted Mac. If the goal is ordinary virtualization on Windows, use Workstation for supported Windows and Linux guests instead.
