Yes, you can install some KDE applications on macOS, but there is no current, supported one-click way to install the complete KDE Plasma desktop as a native replacement for the Mac desktop. If you want Plasma itself, run Linux with Plasma in a virtual machine or on compatible separate hardware. The right answer depends on whether “KDE” means an app such as Krita or the full desktop environment.
KDE applications and KDE Plasma are different things
KDE is the community and software ecosystem behind several kinds of software. KDE Applications include programs such as Krita, Kdenlive, Kate, digiKam and KDE Connect. KDE Plasma is a desktop workspace: it includes panels, widgets, desktop settings and session integration. KWin is its window manager and compositor; KDE Frameworks are libraries used by many KDE programs.
That distinction matters on a Mac. Individual applications can have macOS builds, while the complete Plasma desktop is normally installed as part of a Linux distribution. KDE’s installation documentation describes distribution-based Plasma installation and points macOS users toward applications and other platform-specific methods.

Darwin is the Unix-like open-source foundation underlying macOS. It is not Linux, and a Mac’s normal desktop environment is not a generic Linux desktop stack. Installing a Linux package such as plasma-desktop is therefore not a way to add a Plasma session to ordinary macOS: the package expects a Linux distribution’s libraries, display and session infrastructure, and desktop integration.

If by Darwin you mean an old standalone Darwin system or a different BSD-based setup rather than macOS, the answer may differ. Check the exact operating system and its supported packages; KDE’s macOS application guidance should not be taken as a promise of a complete Plasma desktop for every Darwin-derived system.
Install a KDE application on macOS
KDE’s macOS page lists application bundles for projects including digiKam, Kate and KWrite, Krita, KMyMoney, LabPlot and Kdenlive. Availability and maintenance vary by application and release, so check the individual project’s current download page or KDE’s official download location rather than assuming every KDE program has a Mac build. KDE also provides macOS platform information.

- Choose the application. Confirm that it offers a macOS build and that the release is suitable for your macOS version.
- Check the processor architecture. On Apple silicon, prefer an ARM64/Apple-silicon or universal build when available. An Intel x86_64 build may require Rosetta and is not interchangeable with a native ARM64 build.
- Download from the project’s official page or a trusted KDE source. Follow that application’s installer instructions. Depending on the app, you may download a disk image or package, then copy or install the application in
/Applications. - Launch it normally. If macOS displays “Apple can’t check app for malicious software,” KDE documents opening the app through Finder: locate it, Control-click (or right-click), choose Open, then confirm Open in the prompt.
Signing and notarization status can differ across applications and releases. Only use the per-app Finder override when you trust the download’s source and have confirmed what you are opening. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally or bypass security for an installer of uncertain origin. If the app is reported as damaged or will not start, first re-download it from the official source and check that you selected the right architecture; do not assume every warning is harmless.
KDE’s release directory, for example, has included an Apple-silicon KDE Connect disk image. That demonstrates that an individual KDE app can have a current ARM64 Mac build; it does not mean Plasma is available as a native macOS desktop. Run the full Plasma desktop by running Linux
If you want Plasma panels, widgets, KWin and a complete Plasma session, use a Linux environment. KDE maintains a list of distributions that ship Plasma or offer it as an installation option, including options such as KDE neon, Kubuntu, Fedora KDE, openSUSE, Arch and Manjaro. Choose a distribution based on your priorities and hardware, then follow its own installation guide; package names and installation steps differ by distribution.

Using a virtual machine
A VM is usually the least disruptive way to try Plasma. Choose a Linux distribution and download an ISO that matches the virtual machine’s guest architecture. Intel Macs can generally use x86-64 Linux images. Apple-silicon Macs need an ARM64/aarch64-compatible guest image and virtualization software that supports it. Confirm the chosen distribution and VM software support the combination before installing; support and performance vary.

- Create a virtual machine and assign suitable storage, memory and virtual CPU resources for your Mac.
- Boot the Linux ISO and install the distribution, choosing its Plasma edition or installing Plasma using that distribution’s documented package method.
- Start the Linux guest and use its VM window as the Plasma desktop.
A VM is not identical to running Linux directly on a computer. GPU acceleration, suspend and resume, peripherals, and overall responsiveness can differ. If you need strong graphics performance or reliable access to Mac hardware, verify those features for your exact VM software, Mac and Linux guest before choosing this route.

Using a separate Linux installation
Installing Linux on an external drive or separate hardware can provide more direct access to the machine than a VM, but it is not a universal solution for Macs. Wi-Fi, audio, graphics, sleep, firmware and Apple-silicon support are model- and distribution-dependent. Consult current, model-specific Linux support information before changing partitions or relying on Linux for daily use. For fewer compatibility surprises, a Linux PC or supported Linux laptop may be the simpler choice.

Why apt install kde does not install KDE on macOS
apt is used by Debian-based Linux distributions, not ordinary macOS Terminal. Likewise, dnf, pacman and zypper are associated with particular Linux distributions. They only apply when you are working inside an appropriate Linux environment, such as a VM. Even there, use the distribution’s documented package or desktop-installation instructions: package names and groups vary.
There is no general-purpose macOS command such as brew install kde that installs the full Plasma desktop as a supported Mac session. KDE’s macOS guidance mentions alternatives including Homebrew, MacPorts and Fink for application or development use; availability is specific to each package and can change. Verify the exact current formula, port or package before using it.
Advanced route: build KDE software from source
Developers can build KDE Frameworks, applications and other components from source. KDE identifies kdesrc-build in its build and installation documentation as a tool for building KDE software. This is a development route, not a simple substitute for installing a supported Plasma desktop on macOS.
Successfully compiling a library or application does not automatically create a complete Plasma session. A working session also needs compatible display and window-management components, session startup and system integration. Treat experimental ports or partial builds as experiments, not as a turnkey daily-use desktop.
Common problems and what to try
- Gatekeeper blocks an app: Re-download from the official project source, confirm its identity and architecture, then use Finder’s Control-click Open option if you trust it. Do not globally disable macOS protections.
- The app will not run on Apple silicon: Check whether the download is ARM64, universal or Intel-only, and whether the app’s instructions require Rosetta. Do not assume architecture support is identical across KDE applications.
- A Linux package command fails in Mac Terminal: It is intended for a Linux distribution. Run it only inside the matching Linux environment and follow that distribution’s instructions.
- A Plasma VM looks slow or has display issues: Check the VM’s supported guest architecture and graphics settings, then consult the VM vendor and distribution documentation. A VM may not offer native-equivalent graphics acceleration.
- Linux hardware is missing or unreliable on a Mac: Check support for the exact Mac model and distribution before depending on the installation. Linux compatibility varies, particularly across newer Apple hardware.
- A source build completes but Plasma does not start: Building components is not the same as providing a complete, integrated desktop session. Use Linux for a supported Plasma experience.
Older KDE material about Mac support can provide historical context, but it is not evidence of a current native Plasma installer. KDE’s 2007 account of its Mac port strategy describes an earlier project and should not be confused with current support guidance.
