Yes. You can edit, add, or remove the written caption on an Instagram photo or video post after it’s published. Open the post, tap or click ⋯ (or Image Options on some desktop views), choose Edit, change the caption, then save with Done. This changes the text beneath the post—not the photo or video itself.
Carousel captions can also be edited, but the individual photos or videos in a published carousel generally cannot. And a Reel’s written caption is different from subtitles or text embedded in the video.
How to edit an Instagram caption after posting
In the Instagram mobile app:
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the post whose caption you want to change.
- Tap ⋯ in the post’s upper-right corner.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the caption field and add, remove, or revise the text.
- Tap Done to save.
Meta’s Help Center confirms that you can add, edit, or delete the caption on an already-shared photo or video post. Button names and placement can vary by device, app version, language, and interface rollout.
On a computer, open the post and look for Image Options, then Edit, and save with Done. Desktop controls may not appear identically for every account. If you can’t find them, try editing from the mobile app.

Add or remove a caption without deleting the post
If you published without a caption, use the same ⋯ → Edit steps and enter one. To remove an existing caption but keep the post, open the caption field, delete its text, and save. Be careful not to choose Delete from the main post menu: that removes the post, not just its caption.
What can you change after a post is published?

For details on carousel limits, see Meta’s carousel help page. Its documented limit on individual items matters if a slide has the wrong image, wording, or order: changing the shared caption won’t fix the slide itself.

Carousel captions, Reels, and subtitles
A carousel has one caption for the post as a whole, not a separate caption for each slide. You can edit that shared caption, and Meta also documents editing the carousel’s location and tagged accounts. But you generally can’t replace a slide, remove just one item, or rearrange the media after publishing. If the media is wrong, you may need to delete the carousel and create a new post.

- Written caption: the text beneath the Reel. Open the Reel, tap ⋯, and look for Edit. If a caption field is available, revise it and save. Reel controls can vary by account and app version.
- Closed captions or subtitles: an on-screen transcription of spoken audio. Meta documents Reel and video caption management separately from ordinary post-caption editing; consult its Reels and video captions guidance for the controls available to your device and feature.
- Words rendered into the video: these are part of the video file. They can’t be changed in the written-caption editor; revise the source video and publish a replacement.
If the Edit option is missing
Try these checks before deleting anything:
- Make sure you’re signed into the account that owns the post.
- Open the post itself—not a preview, embedded post, or someone else’s shared copy.
- Update Instagram, then close and reopen the app.
- Try the mobile app if desktop controls are missing, or try desktop if the app is not showing the option.
- Check whether it’s a format with different editing controls, such as a Reel or carousel.
- Try again later in case the issue is temporary. If it continues, use Instagram’s in-app help tools to report it.
These are practical troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes. Meta’s caption-editing help page does not state a fixed deadline for making an edit, so don’t assume a 24-hour or 30-day cutoff.
If a saved change still looks unchanged, reopen the post and check the caption again. Refresh your profile, check from another device or view, and confirm you edited the intended post rather than a draft or another copy.

Edit or delete and repost?
Edit when the media is correct and only the text needs fixing—such as a typo, missing context, hashtag, mention, or call to action. Keeping the post avoids creating a replacement and preserves its existing post history.

Deleting creates a new post, so the original post’s accumulated engagement and history may not carry over. Instagram does not publish a blanket guarantee about how caption edits affect distribution or reach; avoid assuming an edit will either hurt or boost it.

Instagram may indicate that a post was edited, depending on the current interface and feature rollout. The presence or visibility of an edit label is not consistent enough to rely on as a universal rule.
