Current status: You cannot currently downgrade an iPhone from iOS 26.4 to iOS 26.1 through Apple-supported methods. Apple no longer signs iOS 26.1, so its servers reject the restore. Also, an IPSW downgrade is a restore operation that erases the iPhone; it does not preserve the live installation. Any recovery of your data depends on iCloud synchronization and a compatible backup.
Why the downgrade is unavailable
An IPSW is an iPhone firmware package. Downloading one does not mean Apple will allow it to be installed. During a restore, Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes contacts Apple’s signing servers, which verify that the firmware is authorized for the exact iPhone model.
Apple stopped signing iOS 26.1 in December 2025. iOS 26.4 was also unsigned by April 15, 2026, followed by later 26.4.x releases. As checked during August 16–18, 2026, iOS 26.1 is listed as unsigned for the device models checked, including identifiers such as iPhone18,4 and iPhone17,3. Can Settings install iOS 26.1?
No. The iPhone’s Software Update screen does not provide a supported option for installing an arbitrary older release. When an older version is still signed, the computer-based method uses:
- Finder on macOS Catalina or later
- Apple Devices on Windows
- iTunes on older Windows or macOS installations where it remains applicable
Apple’s normal computer restore installs the latest available authorized iOS, not a freely selected old version. A recovery-mode restore can repair or reinstall software, but it cannot make an unsigned iOS 26.1 IPSW acceptable.
What “without data loss” really means
Even if iOS 26.1 were signed, selecting Restore would erase the iPhone. You could recover supported content afterward, but only from a compatible backup or services that synchronize data independently. Apple explains the erase behavior in its [restore documentation](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118106).

A backup created on iOS 26.4 may require a newer operating-system version and may not restore to iOS 26.1. Apple warns that newer-version backups can be incompatible with earlier iOS releases ([Apple’s backup compatibility guidance](https://support.apple.com/en-ie/108811)). Therefore, there is no guaranteed zero-loss downgrade.
How different data types behave
| Data | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Photos | Confirm that iCloud Photos has finished uploading, or copy local originals elsewhere. |
| Contacts, calendars, notes, reminders | Verify synchronization with iCloud or the relevant account before erasing. |
| Messages | Check Messages in iCloud or confirm that a compatible backup contains them; do not assume either route is enabled. |
| Health and Activity | Use an encrypted computer backup. Apple says unencrypted computer backups do not preserve this data through that route ([Apple support](https://support.apple.com/en-us/120001)). |
| App data | Recovery depends on the backup and the app’s own cloud-sync system. |
| Local files | Copy files stored only on the iPhone manually to a computer or cloud service. |
| Authenticator apps | Export or transfer credentials before any erase. |
| Apple Pay | Payment cards generally need to be added again after restoration. |
| eSIM | Confirm that your carrier supports transfer or reactivation; a restore may require setup again. |
Check signing status before any future downgrade
This check is a prerequisite, not a way to install iOS 26.1 today:
- Identify your exact iPhone model and hardware identifier.
- Open a per-device firmware listing such as [IPSW.me](https://ipsw.me/) or [IPSW.dev’s signing explanation](https://ipsw.dev/signing/).
- Confirm that the precise iOS build for your model is marked Signed.
- Check the status again immediately before restoring, because Apple can change it without notice.
For reference, some firmware listings identify iOS 26.1 as build 23B85 and iOS 26.4 as 23E246. A matching build number alone is not enough; Apple’s current signing authorization is required.

Conditional downgrade procedure when a target release is signed
The following is the historical Apple-computer workflow. It cannot complete for iOS 26.1 while that version is unsigned.

Prepare first
- Update macOS, Apple Devices, or iTunes.
- Use a reliable USB cable and enough storage for the IPSW and backups.
- Make an iCloud backup.
- Make an encrypted computer backup, then archive it so it is not overwritten.
- Confirm the backup date, size, and synchronization of critical data.
- Export authenticator credentials and local files.
- Record carrier and eSIM information.
- Make sure you know the device passcode and Apple Account password.
- Turn off Find My iPhone before the restore.
Do not erase the phone unless irreplaceable data exists in at least one independently verified location.
Restore the IPSW
- Download the IPSW that matches the exact iPhone model.
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac or Windows PC.
- Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes and select the iPhone.
- Hold Option on Mac or Shift on Windows while choosing Restore.
- Select the IPSW and confirm.
- Wait while Apple verifies the firmware, erases the iPhone, and installs iOS.
- At the Hello screen, restore from a compatible backup, or set up as new.
Apple may require the Apple Account associated with the device because of Activation Lock. If the backup requires a newer iOS version, it will not solve the downgrade: the device must first run the required version. Apple’s documented workaround is to set the device up without transferring data, update it, erase it again, and then restore the backup ([Apple support](https://support.apple.com/en-ie/108811)).

Safer options today
Stay on iOS 26.4 and troubleshoot
- Restart the iPhone.
- Install any currently signed point update.
- Update affected apps.
- Review Settings > Battery and Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Free storage if the device is nearly full.
- Reset only the problematic settings when appropriate.
- Contact Apple Support for severe crashes, overheating, or hardware symptoms.
Restore the latest signed iOS
A clean restore may help a malfunctioning phone, but it erases the device and installs the latest authorized iOS. It does not install iOS 26.1. Back up first and restore only when you are prepared to recover from a compatible backup.
Remove beta software correctly
If the phone is actually running an iOS beta, Apple’s beta-removal process restores it to the current public release. Beta backups may not restore to an earlier public version ([Apple’s beta guidance](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108763)).

- “The IPSW downloaded, so it should work.” Download availability is not authorization.
- Error 3194 or verification errors. Possible causes include unsigned firmware, an incorrect IPSW, outdated computer software, or communication problems with Apple’s servers. Changing a hosts file does not legitimately authorize an unsigned build.
- Wrong IPSW. Firmware must match the exact hardware identifier.
- Recovery mode exits. For iPhone 8 and later, quickly press Volume Up, quickly press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the recovery screen appears. If downloading takes more than 15 minutes and the phone exits recovery mode, let the download finish and repeat the recovery-mode steps, as Apple instructs ([Apple support](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118106)).
- No backup. Do not proceed with an erase if the phone still contains unsynchronized critical data. Recovery is not guaranteed.
- Apple Watch or eSIM. Plan for possible re-pairing or carrier reactivation after restoration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I downgrade without a computer?
No. Settings does not support installing an arbitrary older iOS version. When a downgrade is authorized, Apple’s workflow uses Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.

Can I downgrade without erasing the iPhone?

Can an iOS 26.4 backup be restored to iOS 26.1?
It is not guaranteed and may be rejected because the backup requires a newer iOS version.
Can SHSH blobs or third-party tools install unsigned iOS 26.1?
Do not rely on them. They cannot provide Apple’s normal signing authorization or guarantee data preservation.
What if the iPhone is stuck on the Apple logo?
Use Apple’s recovery-mode update or restore workflow. Recovery mode cannot authorize an unsigned iOS 26.1 IPSW.
Will my eSIM and Apple Pay cards survive?
Plan for eSIM reactivation or transfer and for Apple Pay cards to require re-adding after a restore.
What if I have no backup?
Avoid erasing the phone while it is accessible. Manually copy local files and verify cloud synchronization first; otherwise, data recovery is not guaranteed.
