Yes. You can connect a compatible iPhone to a TV, monitor, or projector with HDMI, but you need a video adapter that matches the iPhone’s charging port, plus a separate HDMI cable. Use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for a USB-C iPhone or Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter for a Lightning iPhone. A regular charging cable will not send video.

The connector is the quickest way to choose: inspect the port on the phone, rather than relying on a product listing that may not clearly identify compatible models. Apple’s wired-display instructions cover both Lightning and USB-C adapter connections.
How to connect an iPhone to HDMI
- Identify whether your iPhone has a USB-C or Lightning port.
- Plug a compatible digital-video adapter into the iPhone.
- Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the adapter and the other to an HDMI input on the TV, monitor, or projector.
- Turn on the display and select the HDMI input you used—for example, HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Unlock the iPhone if prompted, then open the photo, presentation, game, or video you want to show.
- If the adapter has a charging port and the session will be long, connect a charger to it.
Normally, the external display mirrors the iPhone screen. Video and audio can travel over HDMI, but an app may handle external playback differently, and a successful connection does not guarantee that every protected streaming title will play.

USB-C iPhones: adapter options and resolution
Apple lists the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 families on its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter page. For those listed models, Apple specifies video output up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz. Treat that as a claim for this adapter and its listed phones—not a guarantee for every USB-C adapter, cable, display, or iPhone generation.

The Apple adapter provides HDMI, USB, and USB-C connections. The USB-C port can charge the iPhone while it is connected to a display, and the HDMI cable is separate. A smaller third-party USB-C-to-HDMI adapter may be sufficient for occasional use, but check its manufacturer’s compatibility information, resolution and refresh-rate limits, charging support, and HDCP support. A USB-C plug alone does not mean a cable or adapter supports video output.
Lightning iPhones: what changes?
For a Lightning iPhone, use Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter with an HDMI cable. A Lightning charging cable, Lightning-to-USB cable, or Lightning-to-headphone adapter cannot perform this video conversion. Lightning models may connect successfully, but do not assume they have the same resolution or refresh-rate capabilities as newer USB-C models; capabilities depend on the phone and adapter.
Apple’s 2026 U.S. education price document lists the Lightning Digital AV Adapter at $49, but that is an education price reference, not a guarantee of current consumer availability or retail pricing. Check Apple or the seller for current stock and price before buying.

What will appear on the TV?
In ordinary use, a wired connection mirrors the iPhone screen. The display can show the Home Screen, photos, Safari, presentations, many games, and compatible apps. It does not normally turn the TV into an independent, extended iPhone workspace.
Video apps may instead send the video to the display while keeping controls on the phone. Aspect ratio and black bars can vary. Copy-protected content can behave differently from an ordinary photo or local video: an app, title, adapter, cable, or display may fail a content-protection handshake and produce a black screen or an error. That does not mean all streaming services are blocked over HDMI.
If you are choosing a cable, a standard HDMI cable is generally enough for ordinary 1080p viewing. For 4K output, choose a reputable High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable appropriate to the display mode you intend to use. The adapter performs the video connection; the HDMI cable itself does not convert the iPhone signal.

Troubleshooting: no picture, no sound, or a black screen
No picture or “No signal”
- Confirm that the adapter matches the iPhone’s port and explicitly supports video output.
- Reseat the adapter and both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Check that the TV or projector is set to the exact HDMI input in use.
- Try another HDMI input and, if available, another cable.
- Disconnect an HDMI switch, receiver, soundbar, or other device between the iPhone and display; test with a direct connection.
- Connect power to the adapter if it supports pass-through charging, then restart the iPhone and display.
Apple’s connection guide also directs users to select the correct video source on the display.
“Accessory not supported”
The adapter may be incompatible, damaged, designed only for charging or data, or not receiving enough power. Disconnect and reconnect it; inspect the phone port for debris and clean carefully without inserting metal objects. Update iOS if possible, try a known-compatible adapter, and avoid stacking converters.
Picture but no sound
Check the display’s volume and mute state, confirm it is using audio from the selected HDMI input, and check whether Bluetooth headphones or speakers are still selected as the iPhone’s audio output. Also check the app’s audio controls. Apple describes its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter as supporting video and audio output, but other adapters and app or display setups can differ.

Black screen in just one app
Content protection, an app’s external-display policy, or an HDCP handshake can affect a particular video. First test the connection with the Home Screen, Photos, Safari, or a locally stored video. If those display correctly but one app does not, the basic cable connection may be working normally.
Flicker or intermittent signal
Reseat loose connections, test a different cable, and remove intermediary switches or receivers. A poorly powered adapter, cable fault, or mismatch between display modes can interrupt the picture. For a clean test, connect the iPhone directly to the display.
Wired HDMI or AirPlay?

Apple’s iPhone guide also points to AirPlay for wireless streaming of photos and video. AirPlay avoids a cable but depends on a compatible receiving device and network conditions; a wired adapter is often the simpler choice for a projector or a room where you cannot use the network.
For creators: capture cards and Clean HDMI
A capture card is for a different job from watching an iPhone on a TV. It can route HDMI into a computer or production system for recording, livestreaming, or monitoring. You will need the iPhone’s video adapter, an HDMI cable, a compatible capture card, and capture or streaming software. Capture cards can add latency or create resolution, audio-sync, or HDCP problems; they are not a way to bypass copy protection.
For camera monitoring, Apple documents a specialized Clean HDMI option in Final Cut Camera for iPhone 17 Pro or later. Where supported, go to Settings → Preferences → External Monitor Preview → Clean HDMI. It sends a camera preview without the usual controls or overlays; it is not required for ordinary mirroring or TV playback.
