Yes—but only to a compatible legacy network. A Nintendo DS Lite uses 2.4 GHz 802.11b Wi-Fi and supports WEP or an open network for standard DS game-card connections; it cannot join a WPA, WPA2, or WPA3 network. Even if you connect it successfully, Nintendo’s original online service ended on May 20, 2014, so that does not bring back official online play.

Nintendo lists the DS and DS Lite as supporting 2.4 GHz 802.11b and WEP. An open network may also work. A network’s being visible at 2.4 GHz is not enough: it must allow the older wireless mode, and its security must be WEP or none. Many current routers have removed 802.11b or WEP support. Nintendo’s wireless compatibility table and game-card security guidance describe these limits.
Do not confuse the DS Lite with a DSi. Some DSi features or DSi-enhanced software can use WPA in circumstances that do not apply when playing a standard DS game card on a DS Lite.
Why your home Wi-Fi probably will not work
Most modern home networks use WPA2 or WPA3. You cannot make those passwords work by entering them in the DS Lite: the console’s standard game-card connection does not support those security methods. A dual-band router’s 2.4 GHz band may still be incompatible if it no longer supports 802.11b.

Changing your primary network to WEP is a poor fix. WEP is obsolete and insecure; weakening the network can put every device using it at risk. Nintendo itself cautions users to consider the security implications of WEP. Prefer a separate, isolated access point for retro hardware, and turn it off when you are finished.
How to connect the DS Lite
The setup is usually inside a compatible game, not a general Wi-Fi menu on the DS Lite home screen. Exact wording and menu location depend on the title; consult its manual if needed. Nintendo’s DS Wi-Fi Connection manual documents the general process:

- Insert and start a game that has Nintendo Wi-Fi or online settings.
- Open its online-play or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection menu.
- Choose Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings, Setup, or the equivalent option in that game.
- Select a connection slot.
- Choose a compatible access point from the list, or choose Manual Setup.
- For manual setup, enter the network name (SSID) and, if used, the WEP key. You may also need to enter an IP address, subnet mask, gateway, or DNS server.
- Run Test Connection. A “Connection successful” result means the DS reached the access point and obtained network connectivity; it does not guarantee that an online game service is available.
If manual entry is required, type the SSID exactly as configured. Depending on the router, the DS may work only with the first WEP-key slot; a router may also expect a hexadecimal WEP key rather than a passphrase. Nintendo’s manual covers these settings and the connection test.

- A separate older router or access point: Usually the most practical option. Look for explicit support for 2.4 GHz 802.11b or mixed b/g mode and WEP or an open access point. Keep it isolated from your main household network where possible, and use it only when needed. Older hardware can have outdated firmware, so do not use it as your everyday secure router.
- A separately isolated network on your existing router: This can work if the router supports both 802.11b and WEP or open access for that network. A guest network may isolate devices, but guest mode alone does not make an incompatible WPA2/WPA3 network usable by the DS.
- A travel router: Check the exact hardware revision and firmware before buying. “2.4 GHz” does not prove 802.11b or WEP support. TP-Link’s official specifications for the older TL-WR902AC list WEP, but confirm the specific unit’s firmware and access-point mode before relying on it.
- A phone hotspot: Treat this as device-dependent, not guaranteed. Many current phones do not offer an open or WEP hotspot, and a WPA2/WPA3 hotspot will not solve the DS Lite’s security limitation. Verify the phone can create a 2.4 GHz network with compatible security before trying it.
- Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector: This is a historical option, not a sensible modern default. Nintendo’s manual specifies a Windows XP or Windows Vista PC and a broadband connection; that obsolete setup is unsuitable for most current computers.
Do not buy a router just because its packaging advertises modern Wi-Fi or 2.4 GHz. Verify the legacy wireless mode and security options in its documentation before spending money.

Wi-Fi connection is not the same as online play
Nintendo discontinued the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service on May 20, 2014. Connecting the DS Lite to an access point does not restore Nintendo’s original matchmaking, rankings, downloads, trading, or other online functions. Service availability also varies by game. Some enthusiasts use unofficial replacement servers for certain titles, but those are community-run, game-specific services—not Nintendo’s service—and a working network test does not guarantee that a replacement server will accept a particular game. Local wireless is different. Games with local multiplayer can let nearby DS systems communicate directly, without a router or internet connection. Download Play, where a game supports it, is also a nearby-console feature—not internet access. Nintendo describes DS play styles, including local wireless, in its wireless communication overview.

Troubleshooting
- Your network does not appear: Confirm 2.4 GHz is enabled and the access point permits 802.11b. Move closer, check that the SSID is being broadcast, and verify the router is not set to a newer-only mode. If the SSID is hidden, try manual setup. Nintendo’s manual also recommends checking wireless mode and trying another channel if needed.
- The DS sees the network but rejects the password: Check that it is WEP or open, not WPA/WPA2/WPA3. A modern Wi-Fi password cannot be made compatible by retyping it.
- The WEP key seems correct but authentication fails: Check the router’s WEP key slot (the DS may require slot 1), whether the router expects a hexadecimal key, and whether 802.11b or mixed b/g mode is enabled. Also check for MAC-address filtering and re-enter the SSID exactly.
- The test connects, but the game does not go online: The test only checks network connectivity. The game’s original service may have been discontinued, may never have supported internet play, or may require a compatible unofficial replacement service.
- You are trying a public hotspot: Captive-portal sign-in pages and client isolation can prevent use even if the network is open. Open access alone does not guarantee a usable connection.
Which option makes sense?
- For nearby multiplayer: Use the game’s local wireless mode; internet is not needed.
- To connect to an access point: Use 2.4 GHz 802.11b with WEP or no security.
- For Nintendo’s original online service: It is no longer available; Nintendo WFC ended May 20, 2014.
- For unofficial online play: Check whether the specific game is supported and follow that community’s setup guidance.
- For the least disruptive network setup: Use a separate, isolated legacy access point instead of downgrading the security of your main network.
