Usually, a normal website cannot tell that you started a screenshot or desktop recording with an operating-system shortcut or a separate recorder. A page can observe capture that it requested through the browser’s Screen Capture API, MediaDevices.getDisplayMedia(). That API prompts you to choose a display surface and gives the requesting page a MediaStream that it can record or transmit.
That distinction matters. Browser APIs expose a capture session started by the page; the web platform documentation does not define a universal event that reports every outside screenshot or recording. Managed-device policies, browser extensions, native applications and operating-system features can have additional, environment-specific powers, so “no website can ever know” is too absolute.
The short answer: what a website can and cannot see
| How capture starts | What the ordinary page can observe | Why |
|---|---|---|
The page calls getDisplayMedia() and you approve the browser prompt |
Yes. The page receives a MediaStream and can use it for recording or transmission. |
The API is designed to deliver the selected display surface to the calling page. |
| You press an operating-system screenshot shortcut | No general page-facing notification is defined by the reviewed web APIs. | The screenshot is handled outside the page’s JavaScript environment. |
| You start a desktop recorder or another application | No standard website event reports it. | The documented browser API covers capture requested by a page, not every process on the device. |
| A browser extension, enterprise policy or native wrapper is involved | It depends on that product, policy and platform. | Those controls are outside ordinary page JavaScript and can add capabilities or restrictions. |
This is a boundary of the documented web platform, not a promise about every combination of browser, operating system, extension and corporate management software.
How browser-initiated screen sharing works
1. The site requests a display surface
A supporting page calls navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia(). The browser opens a chooser where you select a monitor, window or browser tab, subject to the browser’s available options. The page does not silently receive an arbitrary screen: the user must participate in the browser-mediated flow.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
2. The browser returns a MediaStream
After approval, the promise resolves to a MediaStream. The site can attach that stream to a video element, pass it to a recorder, or send it through a communications channel such as WebRTC. In other words, the site knows about this session because it started the request and receives the resulting stream.
3. The page can monitor its own session
Code using the stream can inspect its tracks and react when a user stops sharing. That is observation of the session the page created, not detection of an unrelated recorder. A page can also show its own sharing indicator or stop using the stream; these behaviors do not create a universal detector for external screenshots.
Minimal example
The following example illustrates the browser flow. It must run from a secure context such as HTTPS (localhost is commonly treated as secure for development) in a browser that supports the feature:
const button = document.querySelector('#share');
const preview = document.querySelector('#preview');
button.addEventListener('click', async () => {
try {
const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
video: true,
audio: false
});
preview.srcObject = stream;
preview.play();
const [videoTrack] = stream.getVideoTracks();
videoTrack.addEventListener('ended', () => {
console.log('The user stopped this page-initiated capture.');
preview.srcObject = null;
});
} catch (error) {
console.error('Display capture was not started:', error);
}
});
This code can learn whether its own capture track ended. It cannot learn, through this API alone, that you used a system screenshot key while browsing the page.

Operating-system shortcuts
When you use a platform screenshot command, the operating system handles the image. The page does not receive a standard browser event announcing that action. The reviewed Screen Capture documentation describes how a page requests a capture stream; it does not define a browser-wide feed of screenshots made elsewhere.

Desktop and mobile recorders
An unrelated recorder can capture a monitor, window or application without giving the web page a JavaScript object representing that recorder. Whether a particular device displays a system indicator, blocks capture or exposes extra signals is platform-specific. Do not turn the absence of a standard page event into an absolute claim about every device.
Browser extensions
Extensions have permissions and APIs that ordinary pages do not. Chrome’s documentation distinguishes getDisplayMedia() from extension tab capture: the former opens a browser chooser, while an extension’s tabCapture flow can capture a tab after a user gesture. An extension can therefore change what is possible in that browser profile, but its privileges are not evidence that every website can silently detect outside recording.
Permission and privacy rules
The user chooses the surface
The W3C Screen Capture Working Draft dated 16 July 2026 states: “The user agent MUST let the end-user choose which display surface to share out of all available choices every time.” The document is a working draft, not a final Recommendation, so treat it as the specification’s current normative direction rather than a guarantee that every browser implements every detail identically.
Permission is not a permanent grant
The same draft says that permission grants cannot persist. A site should expect a fresh browser-mediated decision rather than assume it can silently start capture on a later visit. The specification also discusses privacy indicators for display capture.
Secure context and limited availability
MDN documents getDisplayMedia() as requiring a secure context and labels it “Limited availability.” Support and behavior can differ by browser and version. Check the exact browser, operating system and deployment configuration before promising customers that sharing will work.

Enterprise policies can block sharing—but that is not recording detection
Chrome Enterprise documentation describes a Screen video capture policy for ChromeOS and desktop Chrome on Windows, macOS and Linux. Administrators can prevent sites from prompting to share a screen video stream, with configured site exceptions where applicable.
If the policy blocks the prompt, a page-initiated sharing request may fail or never become available. That tells you about administrator configuration, not about a hidden signal that an employee started an unrelated recorder. Policy names, supported environments and exceptions are configuration-sensitive; verify them in the managed browser’s current documentation.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat websites can legitimately infer
- The page requested capture: its own code knows when
getDisplayMedia()resolves. - A stream exists: the page can use the returned tracks while the session is active.
- The user stopped that stream: code can respond to the track ending.
- The request failed or was denied: the promise rejects, for example when the user cancels the chooser or policy prevents sharing.
These observations should not be described as a detector for all screenshots or recordings on the device. They are state changes in one browser-mediated session.
Common misconceptions
“The site knows because screenshots are blocked.”
A site can discourage screenshots with visual overlays, DRM-like playback restrictions or application-specific controls, but a deterrent is not proof of a universal screenshot event. Browser and operating-system behavior varies, and the standard APIs reviewed here do not provide a general outside-capture notification.
“A sharing indicator means every recorder is visible.”
Browser or operating-system indicators generally signal a capture session that the browser knows about. They do not establish that an ordinary page has access to a complete inventory of native recording processes.

Troubleshooting page-initiated capture
The call throws a security or availability error
Confirm HTTPS, a supported browser and a top-level browsing context where required by that browser. A browser marked as having limited availability may simply lack the feature or expose a different set of constraints.
The chooser never appears
Check that the request follows a user gesture, that an administrator has not disabled screen video capture, and that the page is not running in a restricted embedded context. Inspect the rejected promise and the browser’s permission or policy controls.
The user can share, but recording fails
Receiving a MediaStream is separate from encoding it. Verify that the browser supports the codecs and recording options your code requests, and handle a track ending when the user stops sharing.
Results differ between machines
Compare browser version, operating system, managed-policy state, installed extensions and whether the page is embedded. There is no single compatibility result that covers every platform combination.

If your goal is automated website screenshots
Screen Capture API behavior is not the right tool for server-side page images. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed, while bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP tools let AI agents call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.
Here is a one-request example; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete option set:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Equivalent Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The service supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF output, full-page and CSS-selector captures, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, cookies and headers, request blocking, geolocation, time zones, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture and a usage API. Every feature is on every plan. The free plan includes 1,000 shots each month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, with yearly billing providing two months free.
Start with 1,000 free ScreenshotNeo screenshots a month; no card is required.
Bottom line
A website can know about screen sharing that it initiated with getDisplayMedia(), because the browser gives that page a stream. The reviewed web-platform documentation does not define a general signal for an operating-system screenshot or an unrelated recorder. Keep that answer scoped to ordinary web pages: extensions, native apps, managed policies and platform-specific behavior can change the capabilities or restrictions in a particular environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a website tell if I take a screenshot?
For an ordinary page, the documented web APIs do not provide a universal event for an operating-system screenshot. A browser extension, managed device or native application may have different capabilities.
Does stopping browser screen sharing notify the site?
If the site started the session with getDisplayMedia(), it can observe that its returned media track ended and update its own UI or recording logic.
Is getDisplayMedia available in every browser?
No. It requires a secure context in supporting browsers, and MDN classifies it as limited availability. Check the exact browser and version, plus enterprise policy and extension conditions.
