Usually, no. An ordinary webpage has no documented, general browser API that tells it a visitor used the device’s operating-system screenshot command. A website can ask the browser to start a user-authorized screen-sharing session with getDisplayMedia(), but that is a different operation: the page receives a live media stream, not a notification that a screenshot was taken. Native Android apps have a separate Android 14 screenshot-detection API with narrower coverage.

What a normal website can and cannot observe

Web code runs inside a browser security model. The documented web platform lets a page observe events and data exposed to that page, but it does not expose a universal “the user just pressed Screenshot” event. That conclusion is specifically about standard, documented browser APIs—not every possible managed-device policy, browser extension, accessibility tool, or native wrapper around a web view.

There is no general OS-screenshot notification

A page cannot reliably tell whether a visitor used a keyboard shortcut, an operating-system capture utility, a phone’s screenshot gesture, or an external camera. It also cannot receive the resulting image through a standard screenshot-detection API. Attempts to infer a screenshot from focus changes, visibility events, clipboard contents, or timing are not dependable indicators and can create false positives.

Screen sharing is a different direction of capture

The MediaDevices.getDisplayMedia() API lets a page request a display, window, or browser-tab stream. The browser presents a picker and the user chooses what to share. If permission is granted, JavaScript receives a MediaStream that can be rendered, recorded, or sent to another participant. This does not tell the page that the user took an operating-system screenshot before or during the session.

The Screen Capture API requires a secure context and transient user activation, and browsers can apply permissions policy and other safeguards. The MDN Screen Capture API documentation describes those permission requirements. MDN labels getDisplayMedia() as limited availability, so check support for the exact browsers and versions your product supports rather than assuming universal compatibility.

Three mechanisms developers often confuse

Mechanism Where it applies What software receives Key limitation
getDisplayMedia() Supporting browsers A user-authorized MediaStream of a display, window, or tab It is screen sharing, not an OS-screenshot signal; user selection is required and browser support is uneven.
Android screenshot-detection API Native Android activity using the Android 14 feature A callback when a supported screenshot action is detected; Android also shows a system notice Only specific hardware-button actions are covered; the callback gets no image, and ADB/instrumentation captures are excluded.
FLAG_SECURE Native Android window A window policy that restricts screenshots and display on non-secure outputs It is a native-app control, not a setting available to an ordinary website.

The standards context is described in the W3C Screen Capture Working Draft: display capture is exposed as a media stream after authorization, not as a browser-wide screenshot event.

How browser screen sharing actually works

1. Start from a deliberate user action

Call getDisplayMedia() from a button click or another transient user activation. Browsers are designed to prevent a page from silently turning on display capture.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

2. Let the browser show its picker

The browser asks the user to choose a tab, window, or display and to authorize sharing. Your code should handle cancellation and denial as normal outcomes.

3. Consume the returned stream

A successful call returns a MediaStream. You can attach it to a video element for preview, record it with MediaRecorder, or transmit it through WebRTC. The stream represents the session the user approved; it is not evidence that a screenshot command was used.

Minimal implementation

const shareButton = document.querySelector('#share');
const preview = document.querySelector('#preview');

shareButton.addEventListener('click', async () => {
  try {
    const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
      video: true,
      audio: false
    });
    preview.srcObject = stream;
    preview.play();
    stream.getVideoTracks()[0].addEventListener('ended', () => {
      preview.srcObject = null;
    });
  } catch (error) {
    if (error.name === 'NotAllowedError') {
      console.log('The user cancelled or denied screen sharing.');
    } else {
      console.error('Display capture failed:', error);
    }
  }
});

Feature-detect before showing the control:

const canShareDisplay = !!(navigator.mediaDevices &&
  navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia);

Do not label this control “Detect screenshot.” Use wording such as “Share your screen” and explain what will be visible. Stop tracks when the session ends, and treat a user clicking the browser’s stop-sharing control as an expected event.

Android 14: detection inside a native app

Android 14 added a screenshot-detection feature for native activities. An app declares the DETECT_SCREEN_CAPTURE permission and registers a callback for each relevant activity, following the Android Developers documentation. When Android detects a supported screenshot action, the callback runs and the operating system shows a notice to the user.

What the callback tells you

The callback is an event that a supported screenshot action occurred. Android’s documentation states: “The callback doesn’t provide an image of the actual screenshot.” Your app therefore cannot inspect or upload the captured pixels through this callback. Design any response around the event itself—for example, logging that the activity was captured or reminding users about content rules—subject to your privacy and disclosure requirements.

Important coverage limits

  • The documented feature covers a specific hardware-button screenshot combination, not every possible capture path.
  • ADB screenshot commands and instrumentation-test screenshot captures are not detected by this API.
  • The feature belongs to a native Android activity. A website open in Chrome or another browser does not gain this callback.
  • Behavior depends on the Android version and the device’s implementation; test on the versions and hardware you support.

Preventing screenshots is not the same as detecting them

If your goal is to keep sensitive app content out of screenshots or non-secure displays, Android documents the native FLAG_SECURE window flag. The Secure sensitive activities guidance explains that this is a window-level control for native Android applications. It is not a CSS property, JavaScript API, or permission that a normal website can set.

Even native prevention controls should be treated as one layer of a broader design. They do not stop a second device from photographing the screen, and they do not turn a browser page into a screenshot-detection system.

What this means for product and privacy decisions

For a browser-based product

  • Document only events your page can actually observe: display-capture start/stop, stream-track changes, visibility changes, and normal application actions.
  • Do not claim to know that a user pressed an OS screenshot key unless you are operating in a separately controlled native or managed environment.
  • Check current compatibility data for your target browsers. The cited MDN page marks getDisplayMedia() as limited availability, and support details can change.
  • Explain screen-sharing scope before the user approves it, and provide a visible way to stop sharing.

For a native Android product

  • Use the Android 14 screenshot-detection API only for the supported native activity scenarios.
  • Handle the callback without expecting image data, and tell users what the app does when the event occurs.
  • Use FLAG_SECURE when preventing screenshots is the requirement, not the detection callback.
  • Keep browser and native claims separate in documentation, support answers, and privacy notices.

Troubleshooting common implementation mistakes

“getDisplayMedia is undefined”

Cause: The browser or execution context does not support the API, or the page is not in a secure context. Fix: Serve the page over HTTPS (localhost is generally treated specially for development), feature-detect the method, and provide a fallback for unsupported browsers. Verify support for your exact browser versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The picker never appears”

Cause: The call was made outside a recent user gesture, was blocked by permissions policy, or the user previously denied access. Fix: Invoke it directly from a click or equivalent activation, inspect the browser console and iframe permissions policy, and explain how the user can reset a site permission.

“The promise rejects with NotAllowedError”

Cause: The user cancelled, denied permission, or the browser rejected the request under its security rules. Fix: Treat cancellation as a normal branch, show a clear message, and do not retry in a loop.

“We need the screenshot pixels after detection”

Cause: The design assumes Android’s callback includes an image. Fix: It does not. If the user should submit an image, ask them to upload it explicitly or use a separately authorized capture workflow.

“Our website must block screenshots”

Cause: A native-app control is being applied to web content. Fix: Reassess the threat model. A browser page cannot use Android’s FLAG_SECURE as a website setting; protect data with authorization, minimization, watermarking, and server-side controls instead of promising absolute screenshot prevention.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you actually need is a reliable screenshot of a URL for testing, documentation, previews, or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one API request. It is not a way to detect a visitor’s personal screenshots; it is a capture service you control.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

One-call examples

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Every plan includes the same feature set: full-page and element capture, device presets and custom viewports, dark mode, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits and clicks, selector hiding, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing screenshot-API parameter names are supported to ease migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing provides two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start.

FAQ

Can a website detect a screenshot taken with a phone’s hardware buttons?

Not through a general, documented browser API. Android 14’s detection callback applies to supported native Android activities, not a webpage running in a browser.

Does screen sharing let a website record screenshots?

It can provide an authorized live display stream that a page may record, but only after the user chooses and approves what to share. It does not reveal unrelated operating-system screenshot actions.

Can a website see the image captured by Android’s screenshot detector?

No. Android explicitly documents that the callback does not provide the screenshot image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can browser extensions or managed devices change this answer?

Yes. An extension, enterprise policy, accessibility service, or native wrapper may have privileges outside the standard page APIs. Those are separate deployment contexts and should not be presented as capabilities available to every website.

Is there a statistic showing how many websites detect screenshots?

No relevant prevalence statistic is established here. The documented facts concern API behavior and scope, not how many sites use a particular technique.

The Bottom Line

A standard webpage cannot receive a reliable notification that someone used an operating-system screenshot command. Use getDisplayMedia() for explicitly authorized screen sharing, Android’s screenshot callback only inside supported native activities, and FLAG_SECURE when a native Android window must restrict capture.
