Not exactly—not according to the evidence currently available. The University of Maine operates the world’s largest Guinness-recognized polymer 3D printer and has used an earlier version to produce a 600-square-foot prototype home. But the university’s published material does not verify that a complete, move-in-ready house was printed in under 80 hours.

The headline combines several real achievements with an unconfirmed time claim. The printer is real, the house is real, and the technology is significant—but “printed a house in 80 hours” needs careful qualification.

Which 3D printer is the headline talking about?

The machine is at the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center. Its predecessor, unveiled in 2019, held the Guinness record for the world’s largest polymer 3D printer and was used to produce BioHome3D.

On April 23, 2024, the university unveiled Factory of the Future 1.0, described as four times larger than its predecessor. Its stated working envelope is up to 96 feet long, 32 feet wide and 18 feet high, with a maximum material throughput of 500 pounds—or about 227 kilograms—per hour.

Those figures describe a large-format industrial manufacturing system, not a giant consumer printer. The university says the machine is intended for housing, boats, bridges, energy infrastructure and defense manufacturing. It also combines additive printing with processes including subtractive manufacturing, continuous tape layup, robotic operations, sensors, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.

University of Maine’s announcement

The house was BioHome3D

BioHome3D was unveiled on November 21, 2022. The university describes it as a 600-square-foot prototype made from forest-derived, recyclable materials, including wood fiber and bio-resin.

Unlike many concrete 3D-printing projects that print only walls, BioHome3D’s floors, walls and roof were additively manufactured. That makes it an unusually complete demonstration of large-scale polymer printing.

However, “the floors, walls and roof were printed” does not mean that every part of a legally occupiable home came out of the printer. A building still needs systems and work such as:

  • Foundation and site preparation
  • Electrical wiring and utility connections
  • Plumbing
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning
  • Windows and exterior doors
  • Insulation and weatherproofing
  • Fixtures, appliances and interior finishes
  • Fire protection, accessibility measures and inspections
  • Permits and compliance with local building and energy codes

BioHome3D was a university research prototype, not a standard retail home package with a published price and universal approval.

University of Maine’s BioHome3D project page

Was it really completed in under 80 hours?

The primary sources do not establish that. University of Maine material confirms the printer’s record status, dimensions, throughput and housing ambitions. It also confirms the BioHome3D prototype and the parts that were printed. But it does not provide a verified production log showing that the complete house was made in fewer than 80 hours.

The time could mean very different things:

  • Active extrusion time
  • Total printer runtime
  • Printing a structural shell
  • Printing separate modules
  • Assembly time
  • Time from site preparation to completion
  • Time until the building was legally ready for occupancy

These are not interchangeable. A printer’s maximum material rate also does not translate directly into finished-building speed. Calibration, material handling, cleaning, downtime, assembly and conventional construction all affect the schedule.

Associated Press coverage of the University of Maine printer

What does “printed house” actually mean?

A useful way to evaluate these claims is to separate five levels:

  1. Printed component: A wall, panel, mold or structural section.
  2. Printed shell: Major walls and perhaps floors or a roof, with services and finishes still outstanding.
  3. Printed structural house: Most major structural elements are produced additively, while conventional trades complete the building.
  4. Completed house: A serviced, inspected and legally habitable building.
  5. Affordable house: A completed home that meets a defined affordability threshold after land, site work, finance and all other costs.

BioHome3D clearly demonstrates more than a single printed wall. It does not, by itself, prove that the entire construction process—or the full cost of a home—can be reduced to an 80-hour printer cycle.

How this differs from concrete 3D printing

The University of Maine’s approach should not be confused with commercial concrete construction printers.

Companies such as COBOD use gantry systems that move along X, Y and Z axes while depositing concrete according to a digital model. COBOD says its BOD2 system can be configured for different building sizes and uses locally sourced concrete rather than requiring a proprietary printing material.

COBOD says a single-story home of roughly 100 square metres typically takes one to four days to print the wall structure. That estimate concerns the walls, not a complete finished house. Foundations, reinforcement, services, windows, doors, roofing, finishes and inspections continue afterward.

COBOD’s explanation of its construction process

The BOD2 has a stated maximum printing length of 40 metres, or about 131 feet, and a maximum printing speed of 250 millimetres per second. COBOD’s product information describes an operating crew of four, while its process page describes a three-person core job-site team, indicating that staffing depends on the configuration and project.

COBOD BOD2 specifications

Polymer printing versus concrete printing

Approach What it demonstrates Main limitations
University of Maine polymer and bio-based printing Large integrated parts, including BioHome3D floors, walls and roof Research-stage evidence; durability, fire performance, code approval and commercial production require project-specific validation
Concrete construction printing On-site production of walls or structural portions Still requires foundations, reinforcement strategies, services, finishing and conventional trades

Polymer systems may support off-site manufacturing, complex integrated components and the use of forest-derived feedstocks. Concrete systems are more directly suited to on-site construction and already have commercial equipment and projects.

Neither approach eliminates the need for engineers, operators, material handling, site preparation or conventional building work.

Could this make homes more affordable?

The University of Maine connects its technology with housing shortages, construction labor shortages, supply-chain constraints and the use of local forest residuals. MaineHousing has estimated that Maine would need about 80,000 additional homes by 2030, particularly for households at or below area median income.

Is this technology available to ordinary homebuyers?

BioHome3D and Factory of the Future 1.0 are research and development projects, not consumer home products. The University of Maine does not present BioHome3D as a standard house model available for checkout or purchase.

Commercial construction printers are industrial capital equipment. COBOD’s current FAQ says its systems start at approximately $400,000, with the final price depending on configuration, size and accessories. COBOD also describes delivery to independent operation as taking roughly five months, including production, shipping, installation and training.

That is a product for construction companies, developers, architecture firms and industrial operators—not a turnkey solution for an individual homeowner.

The practical obstacles

Large-scale 3D printing still has to solve ordinary construction problems. Material consistency, layer bonding, moisture, fire performance, insulation, weather, reinforcement, curing and long-term durability all matter. A machine’s maximum envelope is not necessarily its practical house size, and maximum throughput assumes suitable feedstock and uninterrupted operation.

Large machines also need skilled operators, engineering oversight and suitable facilities or job sites. A research prototype may not have the warranty, production schedule, standardized design or code approvals associated with a conventional homebuilding system.

Even the environmental claims require care. Forest-derived or recyclable material is promising, but it does not by itself establish the building’s full lifecycle carbon footprint. Transport, energy use, resins, maintenance and end-of-life processing must also be considered.

Bottom line

The underlying technology is real. The University of Maine has a record-holding large-format polymer printer, and its earlier machine produced BioHome3D, a substantial prototype whose floors, walls and roof were additively manufactured.

But the strongest version of the headline goes too far. The available primary evidence supports this more precise statement: the University of Maine has demonstrated a bio-based 3D-printed house using a record-size polymer-printing platform, while the claim that a complete house can be produced in under 80 hours remains unverified.
