No. Steam Points can’t pay for games, DLC, Steam Wallet funds, or other purchases at checkout. They’re a separate rewards balance for profile and chat customization in the Steam Points Shop. To buy a game, use Steam Wallet funds or another payment method Steam accepts in your region.
Why Steam says “Buy games, earn points”
The wording on Steam’s Points Shop describes the direction of the reward: buy eligible content, then earn points. It does not mean you can spend points to buy a game. Points don’t appear as a checkout payment option, reduce a game’s price, or work alongside a card, PayPal, or Wallet balance as partial payment.
Steam says points are earned through eligible purchases and redeemed for community content. Eligibility and reward rules can vary, so check Steam’s current Points help page for details. Adding money to your Wallet is not the same thing as buying content, and you shouldn’t assume that every transaction earns points.

Points Shop items are primarily cosmetics for your Steam profile and chats. Depending on what’s currently available, they can include:

- Chat effects and stickers
- Emoticons
- Profile showcases and other customization items
- Seasonal, event-specific, or game-themed cosmetics
Valve and participating game publishers can change the catalog, so item types, costs, and requirements may vary. Steamworks documentation describes examples of these customization items, including avatars, frames, and profile backgrounds. A game-themed background or emoticon is only that cosmetic; buying it does not grant the game. Check the item page for any ownership or playtime requirements before spending points.

Steam’s Subscriber Agreement treats Wallet funds as a separate feature from points. Wallet funds can be used for eligible Steam purchases, but they are not cash for off-platform use and are generally subject to transfer and refund restrictions, as well as applicable local law.

Can points be converted into Wallet credit, gift cards, or discounts?
No official points-to-money conversion is offered. Steam Points can’t be redeemed for cash, Wallet credit, a Steam gift card, or a general coupon balance. Don’t treat them as a discount balance, either. A separate promotion may have its own terms, but that doesn’t make points a normal checkout discount.

Points Shop items are meant for customization, not as a dependable way to make money. Don’t assume an item can be traded or sold for Wallet funds; check its individual terms rather than treating cosmetics as cash-equivalent inventory. Steam Points are also different from Steam Trading Cards, which are separate Community Items with their own applicable trading and Market features.
How to spend your Steam Points
- Open the official Points Shop from Steam or in a browser.
- Browse a category or look for a game-themed item.
- Open the item page and check its point cost and any eligibility requirements.
- Choose the purchase or redeem control and confirm the points deduction.
- Equip the item using the relevant profile, avatar, showcase, or chat customization controls.
The Steam client’s navigation labels can change, so using the Points Shop link is the most dependable route. If you’re looking for a points option at game checkout, its absence is expected—not a missing setting or account problem.

What to use instead if you want a game
- Buying for yourself: Use Steam Wallet funds or another payment method shown at checkout. You can review Steam’s Wallet funding options; available methods, currencies, and limits vary by country and account.
- Giving a game or funds: Use Steam’s supported gifting flow or an official gift card. A Wallet code can also add funds after redemption, subject to region and currency rules; see Steam’s Wallet code guidance.
- Looking for a lower price: Check the Steam Store for legitimate sales or publisher promotions. Points themselves don’t lower the listed price.
Refunds and account safety
Steam’s standard refund guidance generally allows eligible game purchases to be requested within 14 days of purchase if the game has been played for less than two hours, with exceptions and additional rules. Check the current refund policy, including any rights that apply in your country. If you earned points on a purchase you later refund, don’t assume those points will remain; check your points history and Steam’s support guidance rather than relying on an old claim about reward adjustments.

Because there is no official points-to-Wallet conversion, offers for a “Steam Points generator,” points-to-cash exchange, or free Wallet credit are major red flags. Never give a third party your Steam password, Steam Guard code, API key, or remote access to your account to claim a conversion. Use Steam’s official pages and support channels instead.
