Yes. Power Automate for desktop has separate actions for capturing a webpage, a desktop-application element, a screen, or the foreground window. These are desktop-flow actions. A cloud flow can start a desktop flow, but it cannot capture a user’s live desktop by itself; the machine, account, connection and licensing prerequisites must be configured first.
Which Power Automate screenshot action should you use?
Choose the action according to the thing you need to capture. Browser automation and desktop UI automation use different element types, so a web selector cannot be substituted for a desktop selector.
| What you need | Action and group | Capture choices | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| A complete webpage or one element in a webpage | Take screenshot of web page in Browser automation | Entire web page or Specific element | File or clipboard |
| A control inside a Windows desktop application | Take screenshot of UI element in UI automation | The selected desktop UI element | File or clipboard |
| A monitor, all displays, or the active window | Take screenshot in Workstation | All screens, Primary screen, Selected screen, or Foreground window | File or clipboard |
The documented image formats include BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF and WMF. Microsoft does not rank one format as universally best, so select the format required by the next step in your process.

Capture a webpage in Power Automate for desktop
- Launch or attach to a browser. Create a browser instance with the browser automation actions, or attach to an existing instance. The browser must be running in the same system-user context; browser automation cannot attach to a browser opened by a different system user.
- Identify the target. For a whole page, no element selector is needed. For a component such as a receipt, chart or confirmation panel, capture a web UI element and keep its selector separate from desktop UI selectors.
- Add the screenshot action. In the browser automation group, add Take screenshot of web page. Set the capture mode to Entire web page or Specific element.
- Select a destination. Choose File when another action must read the image, or Clipboard when you will paste it immediately. For a file, provide a full path and select one of the supported formats.
- Run and verify. Confirm that the page has finished rendering and that the output path is writable. Lazy content, login redirects and consent dialogs can change what is visible at capture time.
Example: save a page for audit evidence
Create a dated folder, navigate to the target URL, wait for a page-specific element such as a heading or order number, then save the screenshot to a full path such as C:AutomationEvidenceorder-2026-09-30.png. Avoid a relative path when the flow may run unattended, because its working directory can differ from the one used during development.

Capture a control in a desktop application
- Open or attach to the desktop application.
- Use UI automation to capture the required desktop UI element. Select the control, panel or dialog with the UI-element picker.
- Add Take screenshot of UI element, choose File or Clipboard, then select an image format.
- Save to a full, writable path if the image will be archived or attached to another system.
This route is for a native desktop element. If the control is inside a browser page, use the browser action instead; the two automation trees are not interchangeable.
Capture a screen or the foreground window
- Add the Workstation group’s Take screenshot action.
- Choose All screens, Primary screen, a Selected screen, or Foreground window.
- Choose File or Clipboard and set the path and supported format when saving.
- Run the action while the intended window is actually foreground. A flow that changes focus immediately before this action can capture the wrong application.
Can a cloud flow take the screenshot?
Not directly. The built-in capture actions described above belong to Power Automate for desktop. A cloud flow can use the Run a flow built with Power Automate for desktop action to invoke a desktop flow, provided that:
- the target machine is registered and available;
- the work or school account, desktop-flow connection and permissions are configured;
- the applicable attended license or unattended add-on is assigned.
The desktop flow performs the capture on its machine. This distinction matters for unattended jobs: the image represents that machine’s display, browser profile and session, not the computer of the person who started the cloud flow.

File or clipboard: which output is better?
Use a file when
- you need an audit trail, attachment or later OCR;
- the flow passes the image to SharePoint, OneDrive, email or a ticketing system;
- the run may be unattended or cross-machine.
Use the clipboard when
- the next action immediately pastes into Word, Teams or another editor;
- you do not need a persistent artifact;
- the run stays in one interactive session.
Clipboard capture is vulnerable to another application replacing clipboard contents. File output is usually safer for unattended evidence collection.
Appending screenshots to a Word document
To document every step, place a screenshot action after each meaningful milestone, save each image with a unique name, and then use Word or Office automation to insert the files in sequence. A robust pattern is:

- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
- Set a counter or timestamp variable.
- Save
step-001.pngimmediately after the first successful step. - Repeat after each state change, keeping the screenshot directly after the action it documents.
- At the end, create or open the Word document and insert the files in numeric order, adding a heading or caption before each image.
- Save the document only after all insertions succeed.
For troubleshooting rather than documentation, Microsoft recommends putting screenshot actions immediately before and after the failing step. The pair shows the state that entered the action and the state that followed it.
Troubleshooting common failures
The web element cannot be found
Cause: the selector is stale, the page has not rendered, an iframe or navigation changed the element, or a desktop selector was used for a web element.
Fix: recreate or strengthen the web selector, wait for a distinctive element, confirm the correct browser instance, and keep browser automation attached to the same system-user session.
The screenshot file is not created
Cause: the directory does not exist, the account lacks write permission, the path is relative or invalid, or the selected format/path is rejected.
Fix: create the directory first, use an absolute path, test a local writable folder, and verify the extension and format selected in the action.

The clipboard is empty or contains the wrong image
Cause: another action replaced the clipboard, the run is unattended, or the next application was not ready to paste.
Fix: prefer file output, or paste immediately after capture and add a check that the destination application has focus.
The capture shows a login, blank page or loading screen
Cause: the flow captured before navigation, authentication, JavaScript rendering or a delayed element completed.
Fix: wait for a reliable selector, add a deliberate delay only when necessary, and verify the browser profile and credentials used by the desktop-flow connection.
Unattended screen capture fails around a UAC prompt
Microsoft documents a specific failure in which a security policy affecting a UAC prompt prevents workstation screen access. Check the policy and prompt behavior on the registered machine; do not assume every screenshot error has this cause.

The cloud-triggered run cannot start
Check machine registration, that the machine is online, the desktop-flow connection, account permissions and the attended or unattended licensing requirement. A successful cloud trigger does not guarantee that the desktop session is in the visual state your screenshot expects.
Reliability and performance practices
- Wait for a meaningful selector instead of using a long fixed delay everywhere.
- Use unique, deterministic filenames and retain the run identifier with each image.
- Capture only the needed element when a full-screen image adds no diagnostic value.
- Keep the screenshot immediately adjacent to the step it proves; later captures may hide transient errors.
- Test both attended and unattended modes. Focus, display availability, browser profiles and prompts can differ.
- Validate that the file exists before uploading or inserting it into Word.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a server-side webpage image rather than a screenshot of a local desktop session, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all request options. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Options cover full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors/delays/network idle, blocking ads or request types, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Power Automate capture a specific browser element instead of the whole page?
Yes. Use Take screenshot of web page and select Specific element, then provide the web UI element captured from the browser automation tree.
What does a Power Automate screenshot represent in an unattended run?
It represents the display, foreground window or application state on the registered machine where the desktop flow executes.
Which image format should I choose?
Choose the format required by the destination system. The documented actions support BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF and WMF, without declaring one universally best.
The Bottom Line
Power Automate can take screenshots, but the correct action depends on whether the target is a webpage, desktop control, screen or foreground window. Use desktop flows for local UI capture, configure cloud-to-desktop prerequisites for remote triggering, and validate selectors, paths and unattended-session behavior.
