Yes. A parent can restrict Roblox’s standard chat and other communication features through a linked parent account. But there is no guarantee that one setting disables every way of communicating: parents should check each feature separately, and a game may have its own chat system that Roblox’s standard controls do not cover.
What Roblox chat controls cover
Roblox separates communication into several features. Turning one off does not necessarily turn off the others. Labels and options can vary by account, age group, region, and feature availability.

How to turn off Roblox chat from a parent account
You need a Roblox parent account with parent privileges linked to your child’s account. Roblox’s instructions require the parent to verify their age; its documented methods include a government-issued ID or credit card. See how to link a child’s account.

- Open Parental Controls. On desktop, sign in to the parent account, select the gear icon, then Settings → Parental Controls. In the Roblox mobile app, select More → Settings → Parental Controls.
- Select the child’s linked account. Make sure you are managing the child’s account, not just viewing privacy settings on your own account.
- Open the communication settings. Go to Settings You Manage → Communication.
- Review every communication category. Choose Off or No one for the features you want to disable, where those options are shown. Check game/Experience chat, game direct chat, Friends chat, Party, Group Party, and Quick Words individually.
- Save or confirm changes if prompted. Then check the account again and, if needed, test in an experience where your child previously saw chat.
The current Roblox parent-control path is through Parental Controls, not simply the child’s older-style Privacy menu. The options shown can differ by account and region.
You can restrict communication without necessarily blocking Roblox or every game. Roblox’s parental controls manage communication separately from game access and other controls.

Turn off voice chat separately
If your goal is to prevent all Roblox communication, check voice as well as text. Roblox documents a separate user setting at Settings → Privacy & content maturity → Communication → Voice Chat → Use microphone to chat with voice → Off. Where available, also review the corresponding control in the parent dashboard. Voice chat depends on eligibility, age checks, region, and supported experiences; it is not the same feature as text chat. See Roblox’s instructions to turn off Voice Chat.
For the strictest practical setup
- Set Game/Experience chat and Game direct chat to the most restrictive available option.
- Set Friends chat to No one and Party and Group Party to No one, if offered.
- Disable Voice chat and Quick Words where those controls appear.
- Review your child’s connections and block or report any account you do not want them contacting.
- Block any experience whose custom communication system remains available or is otherwise unsuitable.
This is the closest practical equivalent to turning off all standard Roblox communication. It is not a universal guarantee against every custom feature a developer might build into an experience.

Why chat might still appear
- A game uses its own communication system. Custom text boxes, role-play or trading interfaces, and other developer-built features may not follow Roblox’s standard chat settings. If the parent controls do not affect a specific feature, block that experience through parental game-access controls. Roblox says parents can restrict access to particular games; see its Parental Controls FAQ.
- Only one category was disabled. Friends chat, direct in-game chat, Party features, voice, and Quick Words are distinct. Reopen Communication and check each one.
- You changed the setting in the wrong place or account. The parent must use the linked child profile in Parental Controls. A child’s in-game chat toggle is not the same as a parent restriction.
- The child used an in-game toggle. Roblox’s Experience Controls let a player toggle features such as Chat, Voice chat, and Quick Words in an experience. These controls are not a substitute for a parent-managed account restriction.
- The account’s age, age check, or region affects what appears. Roblox’s communication access and defaults vary with age group, age-check status, consent, and region. A missing option does not necessarily mean the account has no protections.
Age checks and younger accounts
Do not assume that every account under 13 has the same chat status. Roblox says communication features require a successful age check. Its current rules also say users ages 5–9 need parental consent to enable Experience chat, and users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat. Roblox Kids accounts ages 5–8 have chat off by default and require a linked parent account to enable it for age-checked users. Availability and defaults may vary by region and account type. Age-related control responsibilities can change as a child gets older. Roblox says some settings shift toward the child at different ages and that a parent account is automatically unlinked when the child turns 18. Check the current age-transition rules for the account.

If you do not want to disable every kind of chat
You can take a more selective approach if the controls available on your child’s account support it: for example, allow Friends chat with trusted friends while restricting direct chat, Parties, and voice. Roblox’s instructions describe Friends chat options such as All friends, Trusted friends, or No one, depending on the feature and account. A parent can also review, block, or report connections through the dashboard. Blocking a user prevents them from directly chatting with the child or adding the child as a connection again without permission. See Roblox’s messaging and Friends chat guidance.
Filtered chat is an additional safeguard, not a way to turn communication off. Roblox says filtering is intended to block inappropriate content, personal information, and instructions to move conversations off-platform. If Parental Controls or Communication is missing
- Confirm that the parent account has completed Roblox’s required age verification.
- Check that it is linked to the correct child account and still has parent privileges; unlinking removes the parent’s ability to manage that child’s controls.
- Open Parental Controls, select the child, and look under Settings You Manage → Communication, rather than the child’s ordinary Privacy settings.
- Consider whether the feature is available for the child’s age group, age-check status, and region.
- Update or restart the Roblox app, or try Roblox.com in a browser. The layout may differ across desktop, mobile, and console.
- If the issue occurs only in one experience, check whether it uses a developer-created chat system; restricting or blocking that experience may be necessary.
- If the parent link or controls still do not appear correctly, contact Roblox Support.
Parental controls are account-level settings documented for Roblox.com and the iOS and Android apps, but the interface and available options may not be identical on every device. If your child plays on a console, configure Roblox’s account controls and review the console’s family settings separately; console controls are a supplementary layer, not a replacement for Roblox’s own communication settings.
