Yes—but the right method depends on what you mean by “save files only.” For files that should stay in the cloud without a OneDrive folder syncing to your computer, upload them at OneDrive.com. If you want cloud files visible in File Explorer but usually not stored locally, use Files On-Demand. OneDrive’s desktop app is still a sync service, however: it does not provide a general upload-only switch that prevents cloud changes from reaching the computer.
Choose the setup that matches your goal

Upload files to OneDrive without syncing the computer
For a genuinely cloud-only workflow, use OneDrive in a browser rather than saving into the desktop OneDrive folder:
- Open OneDrive.com and sign in to the correct personal, work, or school account.
- Open the destination folder, or create one.
- Select Add new or Upload, then choose Files or Folder.
- Wait for the upload to finish. Confirm the files appear in OneDrive on the web and, when practical, open one to check it.
Do not delete the originals from your computer, camera card, or external drive until the upload is complete and you have verified the cloud copies. Browser uploads are manual: if you later edit the original file, the changed version will not automatically replace the OneDrive copy.

Files On-Demand is the practical choice if you want OneDrive integrated with Windows but do not want every file downloaded. Online-only files remain listed in File Explorer, but their contents download when you open them. Microsoft documents support for Windows 10 version 1709 or later and Windows Server 2019; settings and availability can vary with OneDrive version and organization policy. Microsoft says OneDrive build 23.066 or later has the feature enabled by default.

To check the setting in current Windows OneDrive:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Select Help & Settings, then Settings.
- Open Sync and back up and expand Advanced settings.
- Confirm that Files On-Demand is enabled, if that control is shown.
- In File Explorer, right-click a downloaded file or folder and select Free up space to make its contents online-only again.
Common status icons indicate how a file is stored:
- Blue cloud: Online-only. It does not use ordinary local file storage, though metadata, caches, thumbnails, or temporary downloads may use some space. You need an internet connection to open it.
- Green outlined check: Locally available. The file has been downloaded and can normally be opened offline.
- Solid green circle with a white check: Marked Always keep on this device. It is retained locally and uses disk space.
To make an online-only file available before travelling, right-click it and select Always keep on this device. To return it to online-only status later, choose Free up space. Marking a whole folder to always stay on the device also makes files added to that folder download, so avoid that setting if conserving space is the priority.
Files On-Demand manages local storage; it does not turn sync off. Opening a file downloads it, and changing or deleting a file inside the synced OneDrive structure can affect the cloud copy and other synced devices. Search may find an online-only file’s name without being able to search its contents locally.
Sync only selected OneDrive folders
If your OneDrive library is large but you want certain folders available on one computer, use selective sync. The selection applies to that device and account; other devices can have different selections.

- Select the OneDrive cloud icon.
- Open Help & Settings, then Settings.
- Choose the Account tab, then Choose folders.
- Clear the folders you do not want on this computer and select OK.
macOS
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar.
- Open Settings or Preferences, then the Account tab.
- Select Choose Folders and clear folders that should not sync locally.
Microsoft says deselected folders are removed from that computer but remain online. Check OneDrive.com if you want reassurance before assuming a folder was deleted. Depending on configuration, certain folders—including Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and Personal Vault—may not be available to deselect. Folders outside the OneDrive location, such as a USB drive, cannot simply be added through Choose folders; upload them through the browser or copy them into OneDrive instead.

Save a new file to OneDrive—or keep standard folders local
In a Windows app, choose File > Save or Save As, select OneDrive rather than This PC, then choose a destination folder. You can choose local or OneDrive storage each time. Making OneDrive the default save location is convenient, but it does not make the folder upload-only: files saved there enter the sync system.
Be cautious with OneDrive’s Manage backup feature. It can bring Windows Desktop, Documents, and Pictures into OneDrive so those familiar folders are available through the cloud. If you want those folders to remain entirely local, do not enable their backup.
To review it, select the OneDrive cloud icon, open Settings, go to Sync and back up, and choose Manage backup. Select the folders you want and save the changes. When stopping backup, read the offered choices carefully: Microsoft may let you keep files only in OneDrive or only on the PC. If cloud-only files need to remain on the computer, download them first by choosing Always keep on this device. Folder locations and prompts can differ by Windows and OneDrive version.
Deleting a local copy is not the same as deleting a OneDrive file
Use the action that matches what you intend:
- Free up space: Removes the downloaded content while retaining the file in OneDrive.
- Choose folders: Removes an unselected folder from this computer; it remains online.
- Delete inside the synced OneDrive folder: Normally deletes the cloud file and propagates the deletion to other synced locations, subject to recovery options.
- Move a file outside the OneDrive folder: Leaves a local copy outside OneDrive, but that copy is no longer synced or stored there.
If a file vanished from OneDrive after you tried to remove a local copy, check the OneDrive recycle bin and recovery options. A file deleted from a synced folder is different from one made online-only with Free up space. See Microsoft’s guidance on deleting files and folders in OneDrive.

Stop OneDrive syncing on a computer
You can pause sync temporarily, quit OneDrive, unlink the computer from the account, or uninstall the desktop app. These steps stop or remove the local sync setup; they do not by themselves delete files already stored online. Before unlinking or cleaning up local folders, verify important files at OneDrive.com and confirm which copies you want to keep. Microsoft’s stop or cancel sync instructions describe the available controls.
OneDrive sync is not a complete independent backup
Synchronization keeps locations in step, which is useful for access across devices but can also carry an accidental edit or deletion into the cloud and to other devices. OneDrive provides recovery options such as its recycle bin, but those do not make an ordinary synced folder equivalent to an independent, versioned backup. For irreplaceable files, keep another copy using an external drive or a separately chosen backup service, and test that you can restore it. A backup solution should have retention that survives local deletion and should be protected from the same account or ransomware event where possible.
If your requirement is specifically “upload new files, but never download cloud changes or propagate cloud deletions,” the standard OneDrive personal desktop client is not a general-purpose one-way upload tool. Use browser uploads for strict separation, or evaluate a dedicated backup tool for scheduled one-way protection.

The free allowance is shared with certain Microsoft storage uses, including OneDrive files and photos and Outlook.com attachments. If a Microsoft 365 Basic or Personal subscription ends, Microsoft says the allowance returns to 5 GB; an account above its quota can face restrictions on uploading, editing, and syncing until storage is reduced or the subscription is restored. More storage can solve a capacity problem, but it does not change the desktop client’s sync behavior.

OneDrive downloaded more than expected
Check whether Files On-Demand is enabled and whether folders or files were marked Always keep on this device. Opening online-only files also downloads them. Use Free up space on the items you want online-only; do not delete them to reclaim space.
Files On-Demand is missing
The control may be absent because of an older or unsupported Windows setup, organization policy, sign-in state, a changed OneDrive interface, or security-software compatibility. Check Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guidance; work or school administrators may control availability.
A folder disappeared after I unchecked it
That usually means it was removed from this computer’s sync selection, not deleted online. Check OneDrive.com before taking further action.

I need a file when I am offline
Online-only files need an internet connection. Before going offline, right-click the file or folder and choose Always keep on this device, then wait for the download to finish.
An upload failed or storage is full
Confirm you are signed in to the intended personal or work/school account, check the OneDrive web interface for the file, and review available storage. Personal and organization accounts may have different quotas and administrator restrictions. Do not remove the local source until the cloud copy is confirmed.
Which option should you use?
- Want no local OneDrive sync at all? Upload through OneDrive.com.
- Want cloud-first access in File Explorer? Use Files On-Demand and choose Free up space for downloaded items.
- Want just a subset of folders on this PC or Mac? Use Choose folders, while checking for folders that cannot be deselected.
- Want a one-way safety copy with independent history? Keep OneDrive sync separate from a dedicated backup or external copy.
Windows 11 generally includes the OneDrive client, and setup supports personal and work or school accounts. Microsoft allows multiple work or school accounts on a computer but only one personal OneDrive account active at a time. Business administrators can change which controls are available. For a cloud-only workflow, browser upload is the clearest choice; for convenience with minimal local storage, Files On-Demand is the better fit.
